Artists create elaborate ice sculptures in Russia
Russia's seasonal Snow Village in the northern town of Kirovsk has once again sprung up ahead of its official opening on December 25th.
This year's icy architectural wonder consists of igloo-like exhibition halls featuring the work of twenty artists.
Organisers have refused to give away the theme of the 2016 event, but some of the work already in place, such as a bear playing the balalaika, appear to suggest that 'Russia in the eye of the foreigner' may be a unifying concept.…

Антоха. Путешествие из Магадана в Европу / Journey from Magadan to Europe (English subs)

Where Stalin grew up - From Sochi to Yerevan
(2014)
Stalin was born in the town of Gori, in the mountains of Georgia. Stalin spent his young life in various places in the Caucasus. His birth house is still there, complete with a gift shop where you can buy Stalin snow globes. How do the Georgians look back on Stalin? Is it a hero or a villain, or both? Jelle passes by the grave of Stalin's first wife, the prison in Baku where Stalin was once trapped, and then went into the mountains. Even Stalin's hand can be felt even in the most remote villages.

It is a complicated history. LA tourism cashes in on Chinese New Year
(14 Feb 2018) LEAD IN:
Luxury hotels in the US are offering special packages and services that cater specifically to Chinese tourists in the run up to the Chinese New Year celebrations.
The Lunar New Year has become a highly anticipated event on the West Coast of the USA in cities such as Los Angeles and Beverly Hills.
STORY-LINE:
High end hotels in Beverly Hills are going out of their way to help Asian guests enjoy the Chinese New Year celebrations in comfort and style.
At the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills, the Lunar New Year package includes Chinese high tea served in the lobby each afternoon.
There are also special New Year extras in the rooms, such as Chinese newspapers, luxury turndowns, and Chinese tea and menu items.
The Waldorf Astoria's director of sales and marketing, Vanessa Williams, says the hotel has seen month on month growth in the numbers of high level Chinese travellers since it opened in June 2017.
She says bespoke packages for Asian clients are a must.
There will be touch points in the guest room that will really acknowledge the Lunar New Year as well as amenities that speak to the Year of the Dog and then we have in our lobby lounge a beautiful tea that has been created by Chef Steve Benjamin, she says.
The Lunar New Year packages are all running throughout February.
In 2017, Los Angeles welcomed 48.3 million visitors, setting a new tourism milestone for the seventh consecutive year, according to the Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board (LA Tourism).
The board says the record figure is one million higher than 2016's total: that's an increase of 2.2 percent, driven by an all-time high of 41.2 million domestic visitors.
LA Tourism says the number of international visitors overall was up 0.9 percent to a record 7.1 million visitors, outperforming both the city's own projected forecast and inbound travel to the US as a whole in 2017.
The organisation says the international markets with the four biggest gains in 2017 were China, South Korea, Canada and India, in that order.
Luxury hotels in Beverly Hills are increasingly catering to the needs of Asian visitors.
At The Beverly Hilton, where the Golden Globe awards are held each January, the Year of the Dog is being welcomed with a package that includes deluxe accommodation, spa-style baths, city views and a Chinese menu.
Home comforts include custom slippers, lush bathrobes, Chinese newspapers, Chinese tea in each room, a special Chinese breakfast menu and a Chinese dessert tray.

NUREMBERG “FOR PEOPLE TO REMEMBER. THE TRIAL THROUTH THE EYES OF THE REPORTERS” / english subtitles
The International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg was public in the widest sense of this word. All the 403 tribunal proceedings were open to public.
Print media, radio, film industry have brought an opportunity to millions of people in the whole world to follow the progress of the Trial.
A large part of places in the session hall was assigned to representatives of mass media.
During the trial, Willy Brandt, the future Chancellor of Germany, was working, being a newsperson from Norway. The American press was represented by John Dos Passos, who later became a famous writer. The Soviet press representatives were the prose luminaries Ilya Ehrenburg, Leonid Leonov, Konstantin Fedin and Boris Polevoy. More than once could Ernest Hemingway and Marlene Dietrich be seen at the hearings. In 1961, the actress will play one of the star parts in the Oscar-winning film of Stanley Kramer ‘Judgment at Nuremberg’
When sensation was about to break out in Room No. 600, three beeps were ringing in the court palace. The film reflects the brightest events of the trial: confession of Hitler’s deputy Rudolf Hess in simulation of insanity, unannounced appearance of field marshal Paulus, eye-opening presentation of the Soviet judge Lev Smirnov, cross-interrogation of “Nazi Number 2” Hermann Göring by the Allies’ chief prosecutors.
In also presents interviews with children of famous Soviet journalists:
– Alexey Kampov-Polevoy (the memoirs of his father, publicist Boris Polevoy, have provided the basis for the film);
– Arina Zhukova, daughter of the artist Nikolay Zhukov who has created the whole gallery of expressive portraits of the process participants;
– Anna Khaldei, whose father Yevgeny Khaldei, being a famous photographer, was not only shooting in the course of the trial, but was witnessing in the court himself.
They all – journalists, writers, photographers, artists – have left us the heritage of true-to-life images of victims and extorters, persecutors and solicitors, court witnesses and residents behind the walls of the Court of Justice. Lest we forget..

SUMMARY
=======
Nicholas II or Nikolai II (Russian: Николай II Алекса́ндрович, tr. Nikolai II Aleksandrovich; 18 May [O.S. 6 May] 1868 – 17 July 1918), known as Saint Nicholas the Passion-Bearer in the Russian Orthodox Church, was the last Emperor of Russia, ruling from 1 November 1894 until his forced abdication on 2 March 1917. His reign saw the fall of the Russian Empire from one of the foremost great powers of the world to economic and military collapse. He was given the nickname Nicholas the Bloody or Vile Nicholas by his political adversaries due to the Khodynka Tragedy, anti-Semitic pogroms, Bloody Sunday, the violent suppression of the 1905 Russian Revolution, the execution of political opponents, and his perceived responsibility for the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905). Soviet historians portrayed Nicholas as a weak and incompetent leader whose decisions led to military defeats and the deaths of millions of his subjects.Russia was defeated in the 1904–1905 Russo-Japanese War which saw the annihilation of the reinforcing Russian Baltic Fleet after being sent on its round-the-world cruise at the naval Battle of Tsushima, off the coasts of Korea and Japan, the loss of Russian influence over Manchuria and Korea, and the Japanese annexation to the north of South Sakhalin Island. The Anglo-Russian Entente was designed to counter the German Empire's attempts to gain influence in the Middle East, but it also ended the Great Game of confrontation between Russia and the United Kingdom. When all Russian diplomatic efforts to prevent the First World War (1914–1918) failed, Nicholas approved the Imperial Russian Army mobilization on 30 July 1914 which gave Imperial Germany formal grounds to declare war on Russia on 1 August 1914. An estimated 3.3 million Russians were killed in the First World War. The Imperial Russian Army's severe losses, the High Command's incompetent management of the war efforts, and lack of food and supplies on the home front were all leading causes of the fall of the House of Romanov.
Following the February Revolution of 1917, Nicholas abdicated on behalf of himself and his son and heir, the Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich. He and his family were imprisoned and transferred to Tobolsk in late summer 1917. On 30 April 1918, Nicholas, Alexandra, and their daughter Maria were handed over to the local Ural Soviet council in Ekaterinburg (renamed Sverdlovsk during the Soviet era); the rest of the captives followed on 23 May. Nicholas and his family were executed by their Bolshevik guards on the night of 16/17 July 1918. The remains of the imperial family were later found, exhumed, identified and re-interred with elaborate State and Church ceremony in St. Petersburg on 17 July 1998 – 80 years later.
In 1981, Nicholas, his wife, and their children were recognized as martyrs by the Russian Orthodox Church Outsid ...

SUMMARY
=======
Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (22 April 1870 – 21 January 1924), better known by the alias Lenin, was a Russian communist revolutionary, politician, and political theorist. He served as head of government of Soviet Russia from 1917 to 1924 and of the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1924. Under his administration, Russia and then the wider Soviet Union became a one-party communist state governed by the Russian Communist Party. Ideologically a Marxist, he developed political theories known as Leninism.
Born to a wealthy middle-class family in Simbirsk, Lenin embraced revolutionary socialist politics following his brother's 1887 execution. Expelled from Kazan Imperial University for participating in protests against the Russian Empire's Tsarist government, he devoted the following years to a law degree. He moved to Saint Petersburg in 1893 and became a senior Marxist activist. In 1897, he was arrested for sedition and exiled to Shushenskoye for three years, where he married Nadezhda Krupskaya. After his exile, he moved to Western Europe, where he became a prominent theorist in the Marxist Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDLP). In 1903, he took a key role in a RSDLP ideological split, leading the Bolshevik faction against Julius Martov's Mensheviks. Encouraging insurrection during Russia's failed Revolution of 1905, he later campaigned for the First World War to be transformed into a Europe-wide proletarian revolution, which as a Marxist he believed would cause the overthrow of capitalism and its replacement with socialism. After the 1917 February Revolution ousted the Tsar and established a Provisional Government, he returned to Russia to play a leading role in the October Revolution, in which the Bolsheviks overthrew the new regime.
Lenin's Bolshevik government initially shared power with the Left Socialist Revolutionaries, elected soviets, and a multi-party Constituent Assembly, although by 1918 it had centralised power in the new Communist Party. Lenin's administration redistributed land among the peasantry and nationalised banks and large-scale industry. It withdrew from the First World War by signing a treaty with the Central Powers and promoted world revolution through the Communist International. Opponents were suppressed in the Red Terror, a violent campaign administered by the state security services; tens of thousands were killed or interned in concentration camps. His administration defeated right and left-wing anti-Bolshevik armies in the Russian Civil War from 1917 to 1922 and oversaw the Polish–Soviet War of 1919–1921. Responding to wartime devastation, famine, and popular uprisings, in 1921 Lenin encouraged economic growth through the market-oriented New Economic Policy. Several non-Russian nations secured independence after 1917, but three re-united with Russia through the formation of the Soviet Union in 1922. In increasingly poor health, Lenin died at his dacha in Gorki, with Joseph Stalin succeeding him as the pre-eminent figure in the Soviet government.
Widely considered one of the most significant and influential figures of the 20th century, Lenin was the posthumous subject of a pervasive personality cult within the Soviet Union until its dissolution in 1991. He became an ideological figurehead behind Marxism–Leninism and thus a prominent influence over the international communist movement. A controversial and highly divisive individual, Lenin is viewed by supporters as a champion of socialism and the working class, while critics on both the left and right emphasize his role as founder and leader of an authoritarian regime responsible for political repression and mass killings.
