The Murray Baker Bridge I-74
The Murray Baker Bridge is a landmark cantilever bridge that carries Interstate 74 over the Illinois River from downtown Peoria to East Peoria in central Illinois. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Murray Baker Bridge was built in 1958, and had an original length of 3,216 feet (980.2 m).
The bridge carries Interstate 74 over the Illinois River at the end of Peoria Lake. The bridge itself is a single cantilever bridge, with two lanes in each direction. Because it has no shoulders, the Baker Bridge is not up to modern Interstate standards.
The bridge is named for Murray M. Baker, who was the first vice president of the company that eventually became Caterpillar. Baker convinced the Holt Manufacturing Co. to move to Peoria in 1909. Holt merged with C.L. Best Gas Tractor Co. and became Caterpillar in 1925.
As part of the Upgrade 74 reconstruction project in 2005, the span's length was shortened to 3,036 feet (925.3 m) to make room for new entrance ramps on the west side of the river. On January 3, 2006, the Illinois Department of Transportation and the chief design consultant for the truss shortening, Alfred Benesch & Company, were awarded the 2006 Eminent Conceptor Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Illinois (ACEC-IL). The project was picked out of a larger group of Honor Award recipients. The winner of the award for 2005 was the city of Chicago with its completion of Millennium Park.

A bridge is a bad place to stop.
If something is wrong try to get to the end of the bridge and pull onto the shoulder. Pulling to the left on a bridge in the middle of a downpour is doing everything wrong.

Elephants Crossing the Bob Michel Bridge
Here at IDOT we help with any number of tasks, including providing traffic control so elephants can walk across a bridge!
The elephants from Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey needed to cross the Bob Michel Bridge over the Illinois River the morning of Tuesday, September 20th to make it to their upcoming show in Peoria. We joined local police agencies to help them make the journey safely by temporarily stopping traffic on the bridge.
They made it across in 15 minutes.
Multiple vehicle accident on I-74 Bettendorf, IA || ViralHog
(Contact licensing@viralhog.com for licensing/usage info.) I was driving home from work and - boom - heard the sound of the guy in the Lexus SUV hitting the car next to me. I thought he was trying to go between us. He was traveling at a high speed, probably 100mph. It initially felt as if I had been hit as well and did check my car after i stopped and it must of been the shock wave from him passing me so close. He slammed into the white car in front of me sending that car across the median into oncoming traffic causing another collision there. The black SUV continued on a ways, then crossed over to the oncoming traffic and hit one more car then came to a stop.
Happened around 5pm Jan 21, 2015 on I-74 in Bettendorf, IA. Five cars involved. Everyone is OK and no serious injuries to those involved.

Traffic is at a near standstill on McClugage Bridge because someone got pulled over.
I know you're supposed to be careful around police and other emergency workers, but bringing traffic to a complete stop is just stupid and dangerous. The cop was completely off of the road. There was no need for this.
