The water levels were significantly lower in 2009 due to a severe drought that had been affecting Australia for the preciding few years.
From Wikipedia: The Murray River (River Murray in South Australia) is Australia's longest river. At 2,375 kilometres (1,476 mi) in length,[2] the Murray rises in the Australian Alps, draining the western side of Australia's highest mountains and, for most of its length, meanders across Australia's inland plains, forming the border between New South Wales and Victoria as it flows to the northwest, before turning south for its final 500 kilometres (310 mi) or so into South Australia, reaching the ocean at Lake Alexandrina.

River Murray, South Australia
The Murray River at 2,508 kilometres is the longest river in Australia. It's source is high in the Australian Alps, then meanders across some of the inland plains that form the border between New South Wales and Victoria before entering South Australia which is perhaps where it is at it's most spectacular. It eventually reaches the ocean via Lake Alexandrina (which at it's widest point is itself over 38 kilometres).
The Murray is a well known tourist attraction and is also used as a fresh water source. It's a popular destination for water sports and holidays. Perhaps the best way to see it is by doing a houseboat trip on it and it was during such a trip that we took this series of spectacular images.

Song Lyrics: The Murray River
The Murray's Always Flowin Down
Between The Border Towns
Of Victoria And New South Wales
Toward The Coast Of South Australia
People Often Wonder Why
The Sound Of The Riverboats Cry
Like Ghosts In A Silent Sky
They Disappear.... They Disappear Into The Night........
How Old It Is We Just Can't Know
The River Gums They Line The Way
Just Like A Beacon As It Flows
Water Comes And There It Goes
The Murray's Always Flowin Down
Between The Border Towns
Of Victoria And New South Wales
Toward The Coast Of South Australia
And If You've Been Along This Way
You'll Know It Has A Mystery Path
Of Rising High Upon The Floods
Into The Regions High And Low
It Has A Power Of Its Own
The Mighty Murray Is A Home
To People That Used It For A While
The Riverboats Have Finally Died.
But It Continues To This Day
What Future Holds No One Can Say
But I Hope It Goes Forever More
I Hope It Flows For Evermore...
For......Ever..... More.....
Ooooooh......
