Cruise on the paddlesteamer PS Canberra, Echuca, Australia
While staying at Echuca, we went to the historic port area and went on a cruise on the paddlesteamer PS Canberra.
The PS Canberra was built in 1912 at Goolwa, South Australia as a single deck fishing steamer, and then used for a short while as a light cargo boat. In the 1940's the Canberra received an upper promenade deck and was fitted out as an excursion boat, where she was operated by the Collins brothers at Mildura. Since 1967 the Canberra has operated out of Echuca and in 2003 she was fully restored and fitted with a 1923 Wood Fired Marshall Compound Steam Engine.

PS Emmylou - Murray River Echuca
The spectacular paddlesteamer, the PS Emmylou, the world’s only wood-fired cruising paddlesteamer, is being relaunched this Spring 2018. Following a specially designed luxury upgrade and fit out, the Emmylou will launch with an extended 3 – 4 night program.
Taking passengers for the first time through some of the most pristine and intact ecological forests, to places of geographic, historic and Aboriginal cultural significance, the PS Emmylou will travel along the world’s third longest navigable river, to world heritage wetlands, and the world’s largest red gum forest.
With only 9 cabins, and the Murray River as muse, this boutique steam-powered cruise, is able to moor alongside outstanding river wineries, drop in to local producers, pause to explore heritage sites such as the 1860s Perricoota Station, and access ancient Murray River tributaries on the MV Kingfisher with an environmental specialist.
The refitted contemporary cabins include fine linens topped with silky duvets, with the boats’ premier cabin, the Emmylou Suite located on the front Upper Deck, with French Doors opening to a private deck and 180 degree views of the river.
Onboard dining, prepared by the Emmylou’s Chef, features local food and wine from across the Heathcote and Perricoota wine regions. Riverside campfires are offered in the evenings, with stunning night skies to complete this unique experience.

Wonderful Echuca :) Canberra passes the Wharf, PS Etona, Adelaide and Pevensey
Echuca is the place to go for traditional Murray steam paddlers and this view shows you why.
To the right is the recently renewed Echuca Wharf, whilst moored against it (mostly out of view) is the delightful PS Pevensey. More in view is the Old Girl of Echuca - PS Adelaide with the rather special 'Mission' paddler PS Etona behind.
Canberra is a lovely steamer and of course PS Alexander Arbuthnot (aka 'Eileen') and PS Emmylou also delight visitors with day and several night/dinner cruises respectively,

When I first went to Echuca in 1990, PS Canberra was diesel powered and, quite frankly, not a very pleasing or pleasant paddler because of that. She was noisy and the diesel engine made its presence well known throughout the ship.
But now, in 2012, she's back as a steam-powered ship once more and thoroughly the better for it :)

The Paddle Steamer Capital of the World! - Echuca, Australia HD
In the 1860s to the early 1900's, Echuca was a bustling port with paddlesteamers ferrying people and goods all through the the Murray, Darling and Murrumbidgee River systems.
By the early 1970's, the port was derelict and unused. The council of the day decided that its paddlesteamer heritage was unique and started restoration of the port.
Today the paddlesteamers are making a comeback. Many old sunken boats are being repaired to their former glory.
Kevin Hutchinson is a Shipwright who has played a large role in the paddlesteamer revival.
Echuca is a great example of how rural towns can use their heritage to establish tourism.
