Murrisk Abbey Murrisk - Ireland
The Murrisk Augustinian Friary, located in County Mayo, Ireland, was founded on lands granted by Thady O'Malley in 1457 by Hugh O'Malley of Banada Friary, County Sligo who was granted permission by Pope Calluistus to establish a Church and Priory at Croagh Patrick because the inhabitants of those parts have not hitherto been instructed in their faith.. The Friary is built on the site reputed to be that of the original church founded by St. Patrick.
All that is left of Murrisk Abbey today are ruins consisting of a church with one central aisle (with battlemented walls and a fine east window), and the east wing of the Friary buildings. Behind the main altar space, the east window is the finest feature of the ruins. There was a belfry tower at the west end of the church, all that now survives of this tower is a vault. The church also contained the tombs of the family that founded it.
Despite being suppressed at the reformation, the Friary continued until 1577 when the friars were driven out - in common with other Augsutinian Friaries, the friars remained locally ministering to their people.

The ruined Murrisk Abbey just to the seaward side of the village was an Augustinian abbey founded in 1457 by the O'Malley family. It was suppressed in the Reformation, but survived for some time.
Croagh Patrick (Irish: Cruach Phádraig, meaning (Saint) Patrick's Stack),[1] nicknamed the Reek,[2] is a 764 metres (2,510 ft) mountain and an important site of pilgrimage in County Mayo in Ireland. It is 8 kilometres (5 mi) from Westport, above the villages of Murrisk and Lecanvey. It is the third highest mountain in County Mayo after Mweelrea and Nephin. It is climbed by pilgrims on Reek Sunday every year, which is the last Sunday in July. It forms the southern part of a U-shaped valley created by a glacier flowing into Clew Bay in the last Ice Age. Croagh Patrick is part of a longer east-west ridge; the westernmost peak is called Ben Gorm.

Une petite route, perpendiculaire à la route R335, débute près du Monument de la Famine (voir vidéo et mène directement à cette abbaye. Elle fait face à la baie de Clew.
Cette abbaye, fondée au XVe siècle, est aujourd'hui en partie détruite.
Notre visite a été écourtée par la pluie qui tombait fortement. Cependant, nous avons tout de même parcouru le site et nous avons découvert entre autres un pan de mur orné d'une jolie fenêtre en forme d'ogive.
Plusieurs vieilles pierres tombales sont toujours présentes dans le cimetière, dont celles de la famille O'Malley, fondatrice de cette abbaye.
