Murtoa is a wheat district town in Victoria, Australia, situated around Lake Marma on the Wimmera Highway, 305 kilometres north-west of the state capital, Melbourne. The town is in the Shire of Yarriambiack local government area. At the 2016 census, Murtoa had a population of 865 and is located around 30 kilometres from Horsham, a major city in the Wimmera region. The name Murtoa is believed to come from a local Aboriginal word meaning home of the lizard. Murtoa's post office opened on 1 August 1874.The working section of the present day Murtoa Grain Receival Centre can hold up to 400,000 tonnes of grain, and is the largest inland receival centre in Australia. Murtoa's Lake Marma, situated in the centre of town, has always been a haven for wildlife and one of the most attractive lakes in the Wimmera. It is currently being improved with restored surrounds. A main feature is the impressive 1890s avenues of sugar gum trees around most of the lake. There is a playground, BBQs, Rotunda and large lawned areas adjacent. Rabl park immediately to the North of Lake Marma is a series of waterways and ponds with attractive treed surrounds. It also incorporates a Skate Park, playground, 1896 Railway's walking bridge, BBQ and large grassed areas. Both Lakes are great fishing and recreational areas, with abundant birdlife and pleasant, formed walking tracks surrounding both. The Lake Marma precinct also includes a quality swimming pool, well shaded both naturally and by shade.

The shed is open to the public once per year and for special events. The inside images in this video were taken during one of the public open days.

An amazing grain shed was built in 1941 as a solution for grain storage during WWII when there was a wheat glut, when exports were restricted. There was once a bigger grain shed beside this one but it was demolished in 1975. What an amazing building this is, it is definitely worth visiting. (Murtoa, Victoria, Australia)

Murtoa No.1 Grain Store - National Heritage Listed

The Murtoa No. 1 Grain Store, also known as the Stick Shed, is the only remaining emergency grain store built during World War Two. It symbolises Australian bush ingenuity and the importance of the Australian wheat industry. The grain store was placed on the National Heritage List on 1 October 2014.

Stick Shed 360 Story

The Murtoa Stick Shed contains 516 Mountain Ash poles from the Dandenong Ranges, which run from ceiling to floor. The highest one in the centre is 19 metres tall. The Stick Shed was a massive grain repository from the 1940s. Grain was emptied from nearby grain silos by rail trucks, and once at the Stick Shed site were loaded onto a hopper via a large bucket. The grain was poured into the shed and reached the top of the walls. Now it is out of commission, but at one time the Stick Shed could hold 92,000 tons of grain – give or take a foot. Up to 70 men were employed in the Stick Shed at the height of its production. Now the Stick Shed is empty but the concrete floors, beautiful Ash poles, diagonal ropes from ceiling to floor, and ambient lighting highlighting particles of dust, are all evocative of past times.
