Murujuga Baby Oysters released at Flying Foam Passage in the Pilbara
BABY OYSTERS RELEASED LAST WEEK AT FLYING FOAM PASSAGE (video)
120,000 baby oysters have made their way from Albany to the Pilbara and will be released off the Dampier coast at the Flying Foam Passage this morning.
The baby oysters will be monitored by the Murujuga Rangers as they grow to market size.
Steven Gill from Maxima Pearling Company is excited about the Pilbara Rock Oyster Research and Development project.
In February this year, we collected some of the oysters that were in breeding condition from Flying Foam and we transported them to Albany and the Albany hatchery was basically able to get them to spawn and produced about half a million baby oysters, Gill said.
Not even 6 months and those oysters are 4 millimeters and they're going back into their home and hopefully within about 12 months. We'll have a product that will be ready for market.
Chairperson of Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation, Belinda Churnside is optimistic about the business benefits in the future.
It's going to be a new era for not only specifically Murujuga but the five language groups that are attached to the BMIEA agreement. It's a new phase and a new era from a business perspective so we would like to be around to celebrate the successes of this business.
YABURARA FLYING FOAM MASSACRE 150 YEARS ON 2018
YABURARA MASSACRE IN THE PILBARA 150 YEARS ON
Murujuga National Park lies within the Burrup Peninsula and Dampier Archipelago and is home to one of the worlds most ancient rock engravings and is also the place where a massacre of the Yaburara people took place in 1868.
Yaburara descendants organised the first remembrance day in 2013 and this year marks 150 years since this atrocity took place.
Actor, Ernie Dingo was brought on board this year to highlight the history of the Flying Foam Massacre and the Remembrance day will be held on the 15th of April at the Burrup massacre site at 10am.
The story has been passed down by ancestors of the survivors and transcripts of early pioneers who took part in murdering over one hundred men, women and children.
Audrey Cosmos is the Project Officer from the Yaburara and Mardudhunera Aboriginal Corporation and would like people to research what happened and make their own mind up about how they feel and would like to see you there on the day.

Research impact story – Murujuga: Dynamics of the Dreaming
This team from UWA are exploring the Dampier Archipelago (Murujuga). What they have uncovered so far is astounding, and pushes back the known occupation of this place to before the Last Ice Age. It also contains an estimated one million engraved motifs of great scientific and cultural significance, an important part of understanding the human journey in Australia’s north-west. The Dampier Archipelago (Murujuga) is a National Heritage Listed place, contains heavy industry and is the traditional home of several Aboriginal groups.

The Pilbara - Burrup Peninsula
Located approximately 10km from Karratha, the Burrup Peninsula (as part of the Dampier Archipelago) contains the largest concentration of rock art in the world, estimated at perhaps a million Petroglyphs. In 2003 the World Monuments Fund added it to its list of Most Endangered Places; the first time an Australian place had been included.
Aboriginal rock art: What's sacred now?
Ancient rock carvings on the Burrup Peninsula are among more than 1,000 sites the WA government removed or blocked from its Aboriginal heritage register in the last two-and-a-half years. In 2012 the government created a narrower definition of sacred sites. The Supreme Court has thrown out those changes, but the government now wants a single public servant to determine sacred sites. Sarah Dingle investigates.
