The archaeological museum of Narbonne is a museum located in the palace of the archbishops of Narbonne . It presents a collection of archaeological pieces and artefacts covering the local history from prehistory to the Middle Ages. It houses a large collection of Gallo-Roman frescoes discovered during the excavations of the Clos de la Lombarde site .
It is, with the Museum of art and history of Narbonne , one of the two main museums of Narbonne. Its collections are intended to join the regional museum of Narbonne antique (MuRéNa), whose first stone was laid on November 10, 2015, whose inauguration is scheduled for spring 2019
With 12 rooms, it contains collections covering prehistory , Protohistory , but mainly the Gallo-Roman and early Christian periods. These are of great wealth especially for the Roman era and can evoke the life and history of Narbonne when it was the capital of Roman Gaul . One of the major pieces of the collection is the unique set of murals, known as the Clos de la Lombarde, which decorated an old Roman villa in the region.
The frescoes room exhibits part of the Narbonne collections of Roman mural paintings, discovered during excavations at the Clos de la Lombarde. This room includes a milestone of Via Domitia engraved with the name of Cnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus , as well as a number of marble elements from various civil or religious monuments.

Narbonne is a town in southern France on the Canal de la Robine. The Gothic Cathédrale Saint-Just et Saint-Pasteur was begun in the 13th century but never completed. The grand Palais des Archevêques (Archbishop's Palace) houses archaeology and art museums. The Horreum is an underground labyrinth of ancient warehouses left over from the town’s days as a Roman port. The nearby beach and harbor is at Narbonne Plage.
Narbonne as founded as “Narbo”, a Roman settlement on the Via Domitia that grew rich from sea trade via its natural harbour. You can get a feel for the splendour of Norbo’s Roman homes at the Archbishop’s Palace, where wall-paintings retrieved from ancient villas form the largest collection of Roman painting in France.
The medieval palace that contains them is Narbonne’s showpiece, a jumble of towers, halls and courtyards that convey the changing fortunes of the city. That lucrative harbour silted up in medieval times, but Narbonne adapted with the Canal de la Robine, a green belt of water with historic bridges and elegant boulevards on either side, connecting with the Canal du Midi.
About fifteen kilometres to the east of Narbonne, City of Art and History, at the foot of the Clape mountain, in the Regional Natural Park of Narbonne in the Mediterranean, lies the seaside resort of Narbonne-Plage. Carrying the European Blue Flag label, the resort is appreciated for its long beach – no fewer than five kilometres of fine sand – which is great for relaxing, bathing, and for sports activities such as sailing, beach volleyball, jet-skiing, sand yachting, catamaran or sea kayak. There is also lots of entertainment in the summer at Narbonne-Plage, such as evening markets, open-air shows and traditional festivals.

The Museum of Art and History of Narbonne , the city's main museum, takes place in the Archbishops' Palace of Narbonne and presents collections of fine arts and decorative arts. He is particularly known for his collections of ancient faience and his remarkable set of orientalist paintings.
It is, with the Archaeological Museum of Narbonne , one of the two main museums of Narbonne. Its collections do not come from a pre-existing fund, but were constituted from 1833 by purchases, donations, legacies and deposits
Fine art collections include paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and posters. The painting collection consists of works dating from the xvi th to the xix th century from French schools, Italian, Spanish and Flemish. For ancient painting, we first notice a fine collection of Italian paintings, especially the XVII th and xviii th century but also the Renaissance. This collection includes works by the hand of Neri di Bicci , Pier Francesco Fiorentino , Benvenuto Tisi called Il Garofalo, Tintoretto ( Virgin and Child with Saints ), Bartolomeo Schedoni ,Lorenzo Lippi , Jacopo Vignali , Michelangelo Cerquozzi , Carlo Cignani , Luigi Garzi ( The Journey of Jacob ), Francesco Solimena ( The Adoration of the Shepherds ), Nicola Grassi , Andrea Locatelli , Giuseppe Bonito ( Portrait of a Young Girl , 1745), Gaspare Traversi , Francesco Fontebasso and Giovanni Paolo Pannini ( Alexander the Great in front of Achilles' Tomb ).

These underground galleries from the 1st century before our era consist of a network of corridors leading to a series of small rooms. They were originally underneath a building that has since disappeared, probably a market or a public warehouse (Horreum in Latin). The walls, very well preserved, are evidence of the general architectural expertise and know-how of the ancient Romans. It is the only ancient monument that still remains at Narbonne.
The Horreum is the only building dating from classical times that can still be seen in Narbonne. It is a former underground warehouse and dates from the end of the first century BC and was probably the below-ground section of a market. Two of its galleries can be visited and the sound and light show that has been installed creates an atmosphere rather like that of a market-day.
Stone remains have been put on display in the alcoves that open off the north wing to remind visitors of the splendours of Narbo Martius, the capital of the Narbonne region. You can buy a Pass Ticket, which is valid for 15 days and gives you entry to all the monuments and museums.
The Horreum romain, recognized as a museum in 1975 during its opening to the public is the only metropolitan example of Gallo-Roman underground warehouses of goods preserved almost in its entirety.
Its construction dates back to the 1st Century before J.C., and corresponds to a time when Narbonne was considered as an observatory and rampart of the Romans (Cicéron). It served as a warehouse for grain, wine and oil, and also to stock weapon because of the military importance of the city at this time.

Une nécropole romaine exceptionnelle mise au jour à Narbonne
«A Festus, 10 ans, et Aquila, 8 ans, Iulia Protogenia à ses chéris»: près de 2.000 ans après, la découverte à Narbonne, dans l'Aude, d'une nécropole romaine unique en France, fait surgir de terre, comme intacte, la douleur d'une mère romaine.
Gravée sur une plaque de marbre, l'inscription funéraire fait partie des premières trouvailles faites par les archéologues sur ce site. Datant du 1er au 3ème siècle, il est qualifié d'«exceptionnel» par Dominique Garcia, le directeur de l'Inrap (Institut national de recherches archéologiques préventives).
Mise à 2x3 voies de l' A61 entre Toulouse et Narbonne
40 000 véhicules empruntent chaque jour l'A 61 entre Toulouse et Narbonne, jusqu'à 80 000 en période estivale. La première phase de la mise à 2x3 voies, demandée par l'état au groupe Vinci en 2015, a commencé. Deux tronçons de 14 et 20 km sont en travaux.

Une maison romaine à Narbonne (bande annonce)
Découvert en 1974 en plein coeur de Narbonne, les vestiges du Clos de la Lombarde témoignent de la grandeur de la première capitale de la Gaule romaine : Narbo Martius.
Ce quartier résidentiel était composé de grandes demeures richement décorées de fresques murales. Exposées au musée archéologique de la ville, elles constituent une des plus belles collections du monde romain avec celles de Pompéi et Herculanum.
Réalisé par Marc Azéma, ce documentaire de 26 mn présente les fouilles 1996 de la Maison à Portiques dirigées depuis près de 20 ans par Raymond et Maryse Sabrié. Elle aborde aussi en détail le prélèvement et la restauration des peintures murales. Une reconstitution en images de synthèse 3D de cette maison avec les peintures en place (6 mn) clôt le film. Ce plan séquence était une première en France en 1997.

Campagne de fouilles à Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, le Musée Archéologique accompagne l'évènement
Le Musée Archéologique départemental, outre sa fonction d'exposition, est avant tout un Centre de Recherche et de Ressources Archéologiques permettant d'accomplir les missions d'études et de conservation. La riche bibliothèque accueille régulièrement chercheurs, professionnels et amateurs d'archéologie. Elle a abrité cet été l'équipe de chercheurs dans le travail de rédaction du rapport de la nouvelle campagne de fouilles à Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges réalisée du 13 juin au 9 juillet 2016.
Sous la direction de William Van Andringa, professeur d'archéologie romaine à l'Université de Lille 3 et à l'Helsinki Collegium for Advance Study, ces fouilles d'évaluation ont permis de découvrir et d'étudier un secteur de la périphérie de Lugdunum des Convènes. Menées avec le soutien financier du Conseil départemental de la Haute-Garonne et de la Direction Régionale des Affaires Culturelles (9 000 € chacun), cette campagne a révélé quelques surprises.
