Places to see in ( Toulon - France ) Musee National de la Marine
The National Maritime Museum of Toulon has been installed since 1981 next to the clock tower of the arsenal , one of the few historic sites to survive the Second World War. True memory of the arsenal of Toulon, which preserves the majestic monumental gate dated 1738, the museum has a collection of models of vessels and galleys . The Naval Museum of Toulon is part of the museums of Paris , Brest , Rochefort and Port Louis of the National Museum of the Navy. Its existence is intimately linked to the history of its port and its arsenal. It is accessed by the old gate dating from 1738.
In 1796 , the master sculptor Jacques-Félix Brun (1763-1831), in search of models, decided to gather in his workshop the wooden sculptures and the models of vessels stored in the workshops and stores of the arsenal. He drew up a list for Charles Dupin (1784-1873), a maritime engineering officer who convinced the maritime prefect , Jean L'Hermitte , of the interest of bringing together such masterpieces. On September 3, 1814 , a decree ratifies the construction of a maritime museum whose direction is entrusted to Charles Dupin. A school devoted to the teaching of drawing, modeling, ornament and engraving settles next to the museum
The museum successively occupies several premises of the arsenal and is then hunted. After the Liberation , the naval museum of Toulon is assigned to the tower of Mourillon which takes again on this occasion the name of tower Royale. The casemates of this tower house a large number of rooms, several of which belonged to the old Museum of the Directorate of Artillery. But we must give up installing any object that might fear moisture. The museum of the city continues to shelter the paintings, documents, models ... For a time, two naval museums thus coexisted in Toulon
Housed since 1981 near the main gate of the base defense of Toulon, the National Museum of the Marine illustrates the exceptional activity of one of the greatest French arsenals since the xvii th century. True memory of the arsenal of Toulonhis collection consists of models of ships, frigates, galleys, but also submarines and carriers. A sample of sculpted decorations, representative of the expertise of the master sculptors of the arsenal, large paintings illustrating the port of Toulon over the centuries, navigation instruments and weapons systems tell how the port of Toulon became over time the first port of war in Europe. Reorganized in 2012, the ground floor in the first part is devoted to the establishment of the Toulon Navy from the seventeenth century , under Louis XIV and Colbert , underlined by the fundamental contribution of Vaubanin the creation of the arsenal of Toulon. There is a very beautiful model of the royal rope 5.36m long. In the central part of the museum, two models, made to scale, of a ship and a frigate, were used for the instruction of cadets at the xviii th century. Further on, the space on the ground reminds of the longevity of a typical Mediterranean ship shape rooted in Antiquity.

The Musée national de la Marine is a maritime museum located in the Palais de Chaillot, Trocadéro, in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. It has annexes at Brest, Port-Louis, Rochefort, Toulon and Saint-Tropez. The permanent collection originates in a collection that dates back to Louis XV of France. In 1748, Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau offered a collection of models of ships and naval installations to Louis XV of France, with the request that the items be displayed at the Louvre and made available to students of the Naval engineers school, which Duhamel headed. The collection was put on display in 1752, in a room of the first floor, next to the Academy of Sciences; the room was called Salle de Marine (Navy room), and was used for teaching.
With the French Revolution, the Salle de Marine closed in 1793. The collection was added to models owned by the King personally, to others owned by the Ministry of Navy, and yet others owned by émigrés or executees (notably Philippe Égalité). A short-lived museum was opened between 1801 and 1803 at the Ministry of Navy, then located at Place de la Concorde.
In 1810, Napoléon ordered a gallery of 19 models, known as the Trianon model collection, to be put on display in his offices at Grand Trianon, as to document the types of warships in usage in the French Navy at the time. Jacques-Noël Sané was put in charge of the task. Napoléon also had a model of the frigate Muiron in his bedroom at Château de Malmaison.
In 1827, after the Bourbon Restoration, Charles X ordered a Naval museum to be opened at the Louvre. The task was given to Pierre Zédé. Rooms were also opened or restored in Cherbourg, Brest, Lorient, Rochefort and Toulon. In 1852, Antoine Léon Morel-Fatio became curator of the Museum. He emphasised the importance of painting, adding to the works of Joseph Vernet. He also made a catalogue of the items, and reorganised the ethnographic items of the collection. In 1871, admiral François-Edmond Pâris became curator, and had over 400 models of small crafts indigenous to different locations of the French Empire constructed.
From 1905, ethnographic items were transferred to other museums, and in 1920, the administration of the Museum was transferred to the French Navy. In 1937, part of the Palais de Chaillot was devoted to harbouring the museum, which opened on 15 August 1943. From 1971, the museum became an autonomous body under the Ministry of Defence. In 1975, it was instrumental in the restoration of Port-Louis fortress. In 1992, it purchased Éric Tabarly's Pen Duick V, now serving in the French Navy as a sailing school ship.
