Musee National des Costumes in Grand Bassam, Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast)
The National Museum of Costume is an impressive colonial styled building which houses a wide array of ancient cultural artifacts and collections from all over the country. It was built as a palace in 1892 by the colonial rulers at the time. In 1981, the first president of Cote d’Ivoire, Felix Houphouet Boigny converted it to a museum. Models of the dresses and customs of the local communities including the kings, chiefs from Korhogo, Boualé and other regions of Cote d’Ivoire are on display in the museum. You will also be shown the living room, bedroom, bathroom and toilet used the colonial ruler, as well as the emergency escape route (within the building) for the colonial ruler in the event of an uprising or revolt. Cameras are allowed in the building, so be sure to come along to document as much as you can. Just next to the museum is a small building where visitors can buy souvenirs such as sculptures, paintings, bags and jewelries, among others.

#GrandBassam is a town in south-eastern #IvoryCoast, lying east of Abidjan. It was the French colonial capital city from 1893 to 1896, when the administration was transferred to Bingerville after a bout of yellow fever.[4] The town remained a key seaport until the growth of Abidjan from the 1930s.
Grand-Bassam is a sub-prefecture of and the seat of Grand-Bassam Department; it is also a commune. The town has the aura of a ghost town, since large sections have been abandoned for decades. In 1896, the French capital was moved to Bingerville, and commercial shipping gradually declined until it virtually ceased in the 1930s. In 1960, with independence, all remaining administrative offices were transferred to Abidjan, and for many years Grand-Bassam was inhabited only by squatters. Beginning in the late 1970s, the town began to revive as a tourist destination and craft centre.
The town is divided by the Ébrié Lagoon into two halves: Ancien Bassam is the former French settlement, facing the Gulf of Guinea. It is home to the grander colonial buildings, some of which have been restored. The district is also home to a cathedral and the Ivory Coast National Museum of Costume. Nouveau Bassam, linked to Ancien Bassam by a bridge, lies on the inland, northern side of the lagoon. It grew from the African servants' quarter and is now the main commercial centre of the town.

My Travel Diary 2018- Grand Bassam (Ivory Coast)| Attending TEDxGrandBassam
Salut! Grand Bassam offers a good getaway plan when you are in Abidjan. Below are some of the historic sites you must visit while visiting the town, some are in the video:
• Centre Culturel Jean-Baptiste Mockey Et Bibliothèque Communale
Was initially a market (1934) but was later transformed to the community library (1981)
• Maison Du Patrimoine Culturel
Art gallery and an exhibition center that promotes and preserves the culture of the natives of Grand Bassam.
• Pont De La Victoire
The bridge is dedicated to the women who marched in 1949 for their husbands who had been jailed to be freed.
• Musée National Du Costume
The museum holds important traditional costumes from different parts of the country.
• Maison Des Artistes
• Le Centre De Céramique
A training and manufacturing center for porcelaine
• Cathédrale Du Sacré-Cœur
Oldest cathedral in Cote d’Ivoire, was built in 1895
• Le Phare de Grand-Bassam
A light house that was built in 1914
• Maison Ganamet
Was built in the 1920s by a Lebanese trader.
I went there by public transportation and paid 1,000 CFA to go and to come back to Abidjan. It took me 1hr because of traffic and waiting for the van to fill up but it should take you less if you go by private car.
There are restaurants/hotels with pools located just next to the Atlantic ocean however i wouldn't advise anyone to go swimming as the waves in Bassam are usually strong.
