The Musée Picasso, formerly the Château Grimaldi at Antibes, is built upon the foundations of the ancient Greek town of Antipolis. Antibes is a resort town in the Alpes-Maritimes department in southeastern France, on the Mediterranean Sea.

In 1608 it became a stronghold of the Grimaldi family and has borne their name ever since. In 1702 it became the town hall of Antibes. From 1925 the chateau was known as the Grimaldi Museum. In 1946 it was the home for six months of the artist Pablo Picasso. Today the museum is known as the Picasso Museum, the first museum in the world to be dedicated to the artist.

Picasso himself donated works to the museum, most notably his paintings The Goat and La Joie de Vivre. In 1990 Jacqueline Picasso bequested many works by Picasso to the museum. These included 4 paintings, 10 drawings, 2 ceramics and 6 etchings. These are displayed at the Château in addition to the 3 works on paper, 60 etchings and 6 carpets by Pablo Picasso which the museum collected between 1952 and 2001. Today the collection totals 245 works by Picasso.

다음날 지중해 쪽으로 1시간 정도 차를 달려 앙티브를 찾았다. 기원전 4세기경 건설된고대도시인 이곳은 지금 코트다쥐르 지역에서 가장 큰 요트 항구를 가진, 프랑스에서 사랑받는 겨울철 휴양지이기도 하다. 니스와 망통에서 본 자갈해변이 아닌 황금빛 모래사장엔 뜨거운 햇살 속 봄을 즐기려는 사람들로 가득하다. 앙티브 하면 떠오르는 한사람. 바로 피카소다. 해안가 성벽 길을 따라가면 보이는 곳. 피카소 미술관이다. 고대 그리스 시대에 세워진 요새였던 그리말디 성. 1946년 피카소가 이곳에서 작업하게 되면서 지금의 미술관으로 자리하게 되었다고 한다. 한 전시실에 들어서자 당시 피카소의 작업 모습을 그대로 담은 흑백사진들이 보인다. “이 흑백사진을 보시면 피카소가 스파르타식으로 작업했다는 것을 알 수 있어요. 바닥에 미술도구 이외에는 아무것도 없죠. 그리고 피카소가 요즘 영화 현장 같은 곳에서 볼 수 있는 일종의 큰 반사판 같은 걸 받았어요. 밤에도 작업할 수 있게요.“ 이곳에선 그림, 판화, 조각 등 피카소의 작품 245점을 만날 수 있다. 지중해 풍경을 품은 고대 도시 앙티브에 반한 피카소는 이곳의 하늘과 바다를 그림에 그대로 담고자 했단다. “제가 이 컬렉션을 특별하고 독특하다고 말하는 이유는 이 지중해에서 직접적으로 영감을 받아서 제작된 작품들이기 때문이죠. 자연주의적이고요. 그림을 보면 어부들도 있고, 성게 수프나 생선들도 나와 있죠. 또 켄타우로스, 사티로스 같은 신화 속 인물 작품도 있어요. 왜냐하면 피카소가 여기에 왔을 당시, 그는 그리스 로마 신화와 앙티브를 다시 연결 하고자 했기 때문이죠.“ 이후 피카소는 이 작품들이 앙티브에 그대로 남아주기를 원해 이곳에 기증 했다고 한다. 그렇게 앙티브 피카소 미술관만의 특별한 컬렉션이 만들어지게 된 것이다. 작품 속 유쾌하다 못해 익살스러운 표정들은 피카소가 앙티브에서 보낸 시간들을 말해주는 듯하다.

Pablo Picasso came to town in 1946 and was invited to stay in the castle. He stayed for six months, painting and drawing many pieces of art as well as crafting ceramics and tapestries. When he departed, he left all his works here, and the castle officially became the Picasso Museum.
