Le Musée Pissarro (Pontoise, France)
This is sort of an annex to the Musée Tavet-Delacour in Pointoise, France, and has been open since 1980. It is free of charge. (There is a small charge at Tavet.) The Pissarro museum is in a maison bourgeoise from the late 19th century, on a promentory on which once stood the old royal castle of Pontoise, destroyed in 1742. There is a park around it and ramparts. It overlooks the Oise River and the vista is beautiful.
The museum is dedicated to Camille Pissarro and his sons Lucien, Georges and Ludovic, who were also artists, and the museum has works by Daubigny, Guillaumin, Signac, Hayet, Piette, Matisse, Arranda, Masson and others who stayed in the region. (I mention Signac in connection with the Delacroix museum in Paris you may have seen -- I have some clips up of it on my two channels here and on Dailymotion.)
Camille Pissarro, who died in 1903, is considered one of the fathers of Impressionism. His works feature much of the Greater Paris countryside. He worked in Pontoise between 1866 and 1883.
I noticed an entrance for a huge network of natural caves under this place, and guided tours are available of them. They are an spectacular geological feature of the place.
I also noted there was a religious order (a convent) in this place, going back to Medieval times, as well as the royal castle which was here. The reason I am giggling at the end of this clip is because my spouse was making jokes that a guided tour outside a window, descending to see the caverns, was on schedule for their Black Mass. He then hit me on the head and made me notice that a painting I was admiring was placed right next to a window with the exact same view, which had barely changed in over a century. He usually says strange things and makes me laugh.
The watercolor by the Spanish-born artist shown here impressed me the most, for once I saw a Matisse I could stand, and I really loved all the renderings of the marketplace in Pontoise -- it looks quite the same.
This museum is open from 2 pm until 6 pm from Wednesday through Sunday.

Otto Freundlich (Pontoise)
Pomeranian artist Otto Freundlich, who died in 1943, has an important collection of his works in the Musée Tavet-Delacour in Pontoise, France.
A Constructivist artist associated with the Bauhaus, he is considered a precursor to abstract art. His estate left many of his works to be housed in this 15th c. building, which became a museum in the late 19th c. Before that, it was used as the residence for a vicaire, (a church administrator), and a tribunal.
The building is restored and incredibly intact for something so old, there's a pretty garden with an allée couverte in it, some fortifications border it, and the admission fee is low. It is affiliated with an annex museum (admission is free there) nearby dedicated to the Pissarro family of artists and some others -- Camille Pissarro is considered one of the fathers of Impressionism. That, too, is in a historic building and location, over caverns you can visit in guided tours.
I really like Freundlich and could spend a long time here. Whether using color or not, his works, although he was born in the 19th c., seem quite modern and often stark to me.
There is a very good collection of modern and contemporary art housed in this building which was constructed at the request of the Cardinal and Archbishop of Rouen, Guillaume d'Estouteville, around the time of Christopher Columbus. The visit is recommended, and Pontoise, which you can get to easily from Paris on an SNCF train, has a charming, very old town centre. It's high above the Oise river.
This is really a city of history, and there is an important cathedral with 12th c. origins. This is no more than a 45 minute drive from Paris, generally -- possibly less -- and an easy enough train ride.

An Old Saying and a 15th Century Staircase
The old saying, from centuries ago, essentially says, don't do wrong -- remember, all Adam did wrong involved one little apple!
The architectural features of this 15th c. building located in Pontoise, France are gone into in detail in a clip up on YouTube titled ALLEE COUVERTE. This central staircase divides the façade of the building, which had religious and administrative functions in the past, and the rooms were placed equally around it.
It's now the home of the Tavet-Delacour museum, and features Constructivist artist Otto Freundlich's work -- he is considered a precursor of abstract art. Although he died in 1943, this important artist, associated with Bauhaus, left a large donation via his estate. I paid 4 euros for my visit, considered it worth it, and the annex museum, named for a father of Impressionism, Camille Pissarro, is nearby and does not charge a thing.
I'm not sure why I like making clips of stairs and stairwells. Perhaps because I am mobility-challenged? I show you a bit of what I saw from a window here. Pontoise hasn't changed much, really, in a long, long time -- not the own town centre, anyway.
This is in the Oise département of France and is not difficult to get to from Paris by SNCF trains from either Gare du Nord or Gare Saint-Lazare. There are gardens, an ancient market, caves and caverns, ramparts, a huge cathedral dating to the 12th c. (with later enlargements), and more. Cergy-Pontoise is a university town and quite large. The Oise River is below.
