Yves Saint Laurent museum opens in Marrakech
(19 Oct 2017) YVES SAINT LAURENT MUSEUM OPENS IN MARRAKECH
Fashion lovers are flocking to the new Yves Saint Laurent museum in Marrakech, the sunny Moroccan city beloved by the late designer.
The new attraction has opened its doors just three weeks after a museum dedicated to the fashion pioneer was inaugurated in his home city of Paris.
At the entrance to the museum, visitors buy their tickets in the shade of the red facade made of Tetuan brick and granite.
The stylish structure is the perfect homage to the subject of the exhibitions inside.
The way it has been put together is really symbolic of the building, explains Bjorn Dahlstrom, the director of the YSL museum.
It's an opaque space as we are a lot of textiles so we made sure that not so much light would come inside the building. This is also a way to allude to the riads of Marrakech that are totally closed from the outside but when you go inside you can find the typical circular courtyard. So it's a real homage to the traditional architecture of Marrakech.
The museum was designed by the French architectural firm Studio KO and sprawls across an area of 4,000 square metres (4,783 square yards).
It is located near the Majorelle Garden, which Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge bought in 1980.
Dahlstrom says that while the business was run from Paris, Marrakech is where Yves Saint Laurent came for inspiration.
When he came here in 1966 he had this revelation about colours and this played a huge role in his career until the closure in 2002 of his Parisian workshop. So we really focused the exhibition on Yves Saint Laurent's inspirations.
The museum features a permanent exhibition featuring the work of the prolific French couturier, who died in 2008.
It includes an exhibit hall, an auditorium, a library, a bookshop and a restaurant.
In order to preserve the priceless clothing, the exhibition pieces will be swapped round every six months.
In one black cubic room, the only light permitted to illuminate the couture pieces is that from a giant portrait of the designer himself.
Walls, floors, everything is totally black. And there is this huge portrait of Yves Saint Laurent wearing white to compensate (for the light). It's a five metres square one and it gives light to every dress, explains Kevin Quenel, manager of the museum.
The idea for the site came from Berge, Yves Saint Laurent's partner, and construction began in 2016.
Berge died earlier this year but had come to check on the progress regularly.
One person who knew both Berge and Yves Saint Laurent is Quito Fierro, general secretary of the Jardin Majorelle Foundation.
His mother was a friend of the couple and he vividly remembers the people who came to Marrakech with the designer.
The people Pierre Berge and Yves Saint Laurent used to invite to Marrakesh were exceptional. They invited Andy Warhol, Catherine Deneuve, Betty Catroux and so on, but all together they were a group of friends full of joy, living Orientalism totally.
The museum was, in fact, inaugurated by Catherine Deneuve on October 14, along with the wife of Moroccan King Mohammed VI, Lalla Salma, and actress Marisa Berenson.
Fierro explains how dramatically Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge changed Marrakech and heightened its allure in the 1960s.
We must not forget that Marrakesh was a sleepy princess in the '60s. Back in those days, there was just the Mamounia hotel here and it was a bit abandoned. All this group of friends woke up this sleepy princess.
Those foreigners made other Moroccan people, especially those living in Rabat or Casablanca, interested in the city of Marrakesh. Because, before that, for them it was just dust with the Jamaa El Fna square.

Jardin Majorelle - Yves Saint Laurent's Garden - Marrakech
he Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech is one of the most visited sites in Morocco. It took French painter Jacques Majorelle (1886-1962) forty years of passion and dedication to create this enchanting garden in the heart of the “Ochre City”.
We amble along shady lanes, in the midst of trees and exotic plants of dreamy origin; we walk past refreshing, burbling streams and pools filled with water lilies and lotus flowers; we hear wafting through the air, laden with sugared fragrance, the rustling of leaves and the chirping of numerous birds who come here to take refuge; we stop, and the path turns unexpectedly, revealing a building with Moorish charm, with a hint of Art Deco, painted in astonishingly vibrant primary colours, glowing with an intense blue the artist perceived in the Atlas Mountains. We are soothed and enchanted by the harmony of this luxuriant and vivid imagery, which issues a delicate summons to the senses, offering us a calming retreat near, and yet so far from the bustling city, sheltered from time by high earthen walls.

La villa Oasis - Musée Yves Saint Laurent, Marrakesh, Morocco

Majorelle garden,
French: jardin Majorelle
Arabic: حديقة ماجوريل
Berber(Amazigh):ⵓⵔⵜⵉ ⵎⴰⵊⵓⵔⵉⵍ (urti majuril)
a botanical garden created in 1923 by the French artist Jaques Majorelle.. It is located in Marrakech, Morocco, in about two and half acre. It also has the villa where the artist lived with his wife and that was designed by a French architect called Paul Sinoir in the 30s of last century. The garden took over 40 years to be established. After their divorced, the garden was not taken care of properly.. But in the 80s, it was purchased by two fashion designers: Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé, since then it was restored and became the masterpiece that visitor could enjoy visiting today.. pools full of water lilies and lotus flowers.. plants and flowers of exotic origins.. The passion that the French painter Jacques Majorelle has when he was creating the garden.. The Moorish style of the buildings.. The astonishingly vibrant primary colors.. The intense blue inspired by the Atlas mountains.. All these factors has made the majorelle garden one of the most visited sites in Marrakech.. without forgetting of course the artistic touch of the 2 designers Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé..
Today, the villa houses the Islamic Art Museum of Marrakech, the Berber Museum and has recently opened the Musee Yves Saint Laurent.
