Entry from: Paris, France
Entry Title: Musee du Chocolat--A Tasty Museum
Entry:
The newly opened Musee du Chocolat in the 10th arrondisement was just the kind of museum visit that Rob could sink his teeth into. I'd saved an article about the new museum from a magazine I read while we were on Air France to Bologna last week. It's a brand new, handicapped accessible space next to the Bonne Nouvelles Metro--a neighborhood where tourists probably never ventured before. Owned by a Belgian chocolatier, there are similar museums in Belgium and elsewhere.
Upon entering, one is offered some sample pastilles with varying percentages of cacao from different parts of the world. The story of chocolate is presented from its early days as a sacred and royal drink of the Mayans and Aztecs, to its European incarnation first as a medicine, and then later as the aphrodisiac and delight that chocolate represents today. Aside from the Mayan and Aztec tools, and later Mexican tools that were used to process the cocoa bean, turn it into a paste, and separate the cocoa butter from the chocolate paste, there was a beautiful collection of cocoa pots and cups from several centuries. Videos throughout the museum explain and show the current methods of harvesting and preparing chocolate. Read the Bayonne history to underdstand the interesting role Portuguese Jews played in the production of chocolate. One can view recipes from different cultures as well as many of the European chocolatiers' famous labels over the year. There is a demonstration every half hour in a display kitchen where pralines are made and guests have a chance to taste both white, milk and dark chocolate pastilles as well as the chocolate with a ganache interior that's created during the visit.
The museum's demonstration of candy-making was charming, although the demonstration used only a small chocolate machine to enrobe the chocolate molds and everything else was done by hand. I couldn't help but be reminded of our mother taking us to Hershey, Pennsylvania one summer. If I close my eyes today, I still can imagine the acres of melted chocolate being turned into Hershey Kisses. The verdict however is there is no comparison to the quality and taste of European-produced chocolates. And since the chocolate museum tour ended at a gift shop, those of you who are chocoholics will have to wait until our return for the samples.
