Henri Martin
Henri-Jean Guillaume Martin, French Post-Impressionist Painter, 1860 - 1943.
Born in Toulouse to a French cabinet maker and a mother of Italian descent, Martin successfully persuaded his father to permit him to become an artist. He began his career in 1877 at the Toulouse School of the Fine Arts, where he was under the tutelage of Jules Garipuy (he was also a pupil of Henry-Eugéne Delacroix). In 1879, Martin relocated to Paris and with the help of a scholarship, was able to study in Jean-Paul Laurens' studio. Four years later, he received his first medal at the Paris Salon, where he would hold his first exhibition three years later in 1886.
The year after he won his first medal, Martin was awarded a scholarship for a tour in Italy, where he studied the work of veterans such as Giotto and Masaccio. His 1889 canvas submission to the Salon earned him the gold medal for work that has been described as Pointillist. That same year he became a member of the Legion of Honour. At the 1900 World Fair, he was awarded the Grand Prize for his work. During this period, he became friends with Auguste Rodin.
Although Martin's work as a neo-impressionist is not considered groundbreaking, his work was rather well-received, and has been associated with world-class symbolist painter, Puvis de Chavannes.
Due to his introverted temperament, Martin decided to move away from Paris. After a decade of searching for an ideal home, Martin bought Marquayrol, a mansion overlooking La Bastide du Vert, near Cahors. He performed his best work in the new tranquil environment, and died there in 1943.

Henri Martin (1860 - 1943) Henri Jean Guillaume Martin was a French painter known for his Neo-Impressionist paintings. Like the work of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, Martin’s paintings merge Symbolist imagery with controlled Pointillist brushstrokes and pastel colors. Born on August 5, 1860 in Toulouse, France, he went on to study at the Toulouse School of the Fine Arts under Jules Garipuy. In 1883, Martin received a medal at the Paris Salon, and in 1900 was awarded the Grand Prize for his work at the World Fair. His works are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the San Diego Museum of Art, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, among others. An introvert, Martin eventually purchased a mansion, “Marquayrol,” that overlooked Labastide-du-Vert in France. The secluded location allowed him to flourish and produce some of his best work, and he remained there until his death on November 12, 1943.
Henri Martin was born in Toulouse on 5th August 1860 and entered l’École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse in 1877. Three years later in 1880 he first exhibited, at the exceptional age of twenty, at the Salon des Arts Français, and in 1883 won a first-class medal at the Salon. In 1885, Martin followed the well-trodden path to Italy with fellow painter Amand-Edmond Jean (1860-1935), a journey undertaken by numerous French artists who were encouraged by the state to study the Italian masters.
In 1899, his work “Serenité” was praised by no less than Puvis de Chavannes, further consolidating his reputation. In 1900 Martin’s career moved into the phase for which he is now justly renowned. He purchased ‘Marquayrol’ in La Bastide-du-Vert in Lot where he lived and painted for the rest of his long life. Marquayrol, an old farmhouse with a beautiful garden and extensive views provided much of his subject matter over the years to come. 1905 saw Martin elected as an Officer de la Legion d’Honneur and in 1907 “La Crepuscule” won the medal of honour at the Salon.
Martin was favoured with a number of State commissions including murals in the Capitole in Toulouse, a triptych for the staircase in the Prefecture du Lot in Cahors and in addition a war memorial for the same town. Martin exhibited at the Galerie Mancini in 1896; and in 1910 and 1926, exhibitions of his work were held at Galerie Georges Petit and in 1935, a retrospective exhibition was held at the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris. Henri Martin was a symbolist; a painter of murals, but above all, an Impressionist and it is in this oeuvre that his reputation lies. A true painter of southern France, his paintings, particularly those of Marquayrol, reflect the clarity of light and vivid colouring of the south.
His works can be found in museums in: Bayonne; Beziers; Bordeaux; Carcassonne; Cahors; Dijon; Douai; Lille; Montpellier; Mulhouse; Nantes; Paris, Musée d’art Moderne, Palais des Beaux-Arts; Toulouse and Montreal.

SAINT-CIRQ LAPOPIE - Chemin de Halage de BOUZIÈS - Grotte du PECH MERLE
SAINT-CIRQ LAPOPIE is a commune in the Lot department in south-western France. It is a member of the Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (The most beautiful villages of France) association .
Its position, originally selected for defense, perched on a steep cliff 100 m above the river has helped make the town one of the most popular tourist destinations in the department, and the entire town is almost a museum.
After it was discovered by the Post-Impressionist Henri Martin, it became popular with other artists and the home of the writer André Breton.
PECH MERLE is a cave which opens onto a hillside at Cabrerets in the Lot département of the Occitania region in France, about 35 minutes by road east of Cahors. It is one of the few prehistoric cave painting sites in France that remain open to the general public.
Extending for over a kilometre and a half from the entrance are caverns, the walls of which are painted with dramatic murals dating from the Gravettian culture (some 25,000 years BC).
Some of the paintings and engravings, however, may date from the later Magdalenian era (16,000 years BC).
This area once had a great river flowing through it, cutting underground channels which were later used by humans for shelter and eventually for mural painting.
The cave art located in the deeper areas of the cave was discovered in 1922 by Andre David and Henri Dutetre, two teen-aged boys who had been exploring the cave for two years.
Like other children of the area, these two had been encouraged and assisted in their exploration by Father Amedee Lemozi, the curate of Cabrerets, an amateur archaeologist who had discovered other cave paintings in the region.
The walls of seven of the chambers at Pech Merle have fresh, lifelike images of woolly mammoth, spotted horses,] single colour horses, bovids, reindeer, handprints, and some humans.
Footprints of children, preserved in what was once clay, have been found more than half a mile underground.

Marc Petit s'expose
