Canadian Bushplane Museum - Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

The Great Canadian Adventure Tour across this fabulous country was a once in a lifetime experience and one that was full of wonderful surprises but no surprise was more fulfilling than the Canadian Bushplane Museum and Heritage Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. It's one of those unexpected gems that sticks in your mind long after the trip is over.
The bush plane is as historically distinct to Canada as the rise of the Canadian Mounties, the building of the CN Railway or the confederation of the country. It's one of the tools that helped shape the country as it is today. That history, along with modern day bush plane paraphernalia, can all be experienced in the museum.
The Bushplane Museum and Heritage Centre is a vast airplane hanger, which was began way back in 1928 as the original Ontario Provincial Air building. It is situated right on the bank of the St Mary's River and one wall of the building is all glass doors that open to the river in the summer where bush planes glide in and out of the hanger to take off and land. The inside of the museum is a treasure trove of authentic aircraft, rare specimens and aircraft relics that inspire visitors from all over the world to come and see. There are also interactive aviation games for kids, a flight simulator for parents, a family 4D movie cinema, intriguing stories from former pilots, and loads of memorabilia from the history of Canadian aviation and bush plane lore. We spent hours in the museum before we had to drag ourselves away to the next location.
The executive director of the museum, Mike Delfre, showed us around and shared his passion and the passion of the entire staff and community with us. The Bush Plane Museum is a pride of the community. It's here in the north of Canada back in 1928 from where the country began mapping out its forests and land. Sault Ste. Marie is a focal point in Canadian history responsible for shaping the county and the people of Sault Ste. Marie are proud of that fact. The museum is a wonderful testament to the rich and exciting story of the Canadian bush plane story.
Anytime you're in Northern Ontario this museum is a must-see. With or without kids it will go down on your list as one of those unforgettable gems that was far more than you bargained for. This trip the GCAT crew drove our Chrysler caravan 'Tripp'er' across the country but on our next Great Canadian Adventure Tour we might consider flying ... in a bush plane. You don't get any more Canadian than that!
Enjoy your trip to the museum!

In 1965 the Vachon family decides to establish themselves in Ste-Marie-de-Beauce. Soon after, Pauline becomes involved in supporting local arts and cultural events. At the same time, she is showing an increased awareness towards the promotion and preservation of the history of this small community. Then follows her implication in the Société historique de Nouvelle-Beauce where she will soon after be appointed President. Finally, after a 17 year struggle, the dream of both Pauline Vachon and the Société becomes reality: the first francophone museum dedicated to our rich aviation heritage was officially opened on August 9, 2011 in Sainte-Marie-de-Beauce. Mrs Vachon's strong determination coupled with a high degree of motivation were instrumental in setting up this aviation museum that will capture and preserve aviation artifacts for future generations.

MONTREAL AIRPLANE MUSEUM
We go to Saint-Anne de Bellevue to visit Canadian Aviation Heritage Center. This center is completely ran by retired personnel who were in the aviation industry. The museum is filled with model planes dating back to the early 1900s. The center also provides opportunities for people to come and learn how to build their own airplane, which is pretty neat.

de Havilland Canada DH89 Dragon Rapide at Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre
The de Havilland DH.89 Dragon Rapide is a 1930s short-haul biplane airliner developed and produced by British aircraft company de Havilland. Capable of accommodating 6–8 passengers, it proved an economical and durable craft, despite its relatively primitive plywood construction.
Developed during the early 1930s, the Dragon Rapide was essentially a smaller, twin-engined version of the four-engined DH.86 Express, and shared a number of common features, such as its tapered wings, streamlined fairings and Gipsy Six engines. First named the Dragon Six, the type was marketed as Dragon Rapide and later simply known as the Rapide. Upon its introduction in summer 1934, it proved to be a popular aircraft with airlines and private civil operators alike, attaining considerable foreign sales in addition to its domestic use.
Upon the outbreak of the World War II, many of the civil Rapides were impressed into service with the Royal Air Force (RAF) and Royal Navy. Referred to in military service by the name de Havilland Dominie, the type was employed for radio and navigation training, passenger transport and communications missions; hundreds of additional Dominies were also constructed during the war. Other Rapides continued to be operated by British airlines throughout the war under the auspices of the Associated Airways Joint Committee (AAJC). Postwar, many military aircraft were returned to civilian service. Shortly after the end of the Second World War, de Havilland introduced a Dragon Rapide replacement, the de Havilland Dove. DHC-2, DHC-3, DHC-6 Water Bombing
Rare Waterbombing Clips featuring DeHavilland Beavers, Otters, and Twin Otters.
Included are clips of CF-OBS, Arguably the worlds first water bomber, designed and built right here in Ontario. You can see CF-OBS on display in the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Museum in Sioux Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada.
In the video you'll see Frank MacDougall (the one with the unlaced boots). Frank was the first flying Chief Ranger of Algonquin Park. Frank helped design the DHC-2 Beaver. He considered himself just another OPAS pilot according to Bruce West's book Firebirds.. Him, George Ponsford and Phillip Garratt, President of DeHavilland Canada were good friends. Basically they decided if DHC made the -2, the OPAS would buy the initial 25 Beavers.
The Ontario Provincial Air Service (OPAS/Later known as Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources) was an early pioneer in the use of aircraft for the discovery and extinguishing of forest fires. Initially this involved carrying warnings of fires back to existing fire patrols, to be extinguished by teams that traveled by canoe, or over land. Soon they began ferrying firefighters (never more than a few at a time due to the limited carrying capacity of the aircraft available) with a hand operated water pump near a fire. The OPAS started flying old Curtis H Boats, and completely rebuilt damaged aircraft before building a number of aircraft under license to meet their requirements such as the Buhl Air Sedan. Later the OPAS provided considerable input on the development of the de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver and de Havilland Canada DHC-3 Otter and finally were central to the invention of the water bomber. The first water bomber was an OPAS DHC Beaver (CF-OBS) with a tank mounted on the float designed to dump the water out quickly. This had followed unsuccessful experiments with bags of water.
