EXPLORING the KANAK TJIBAOU CULTURAL CENTRE in NOUMEA ????, NEW CALEDONIA (PACIFIC OCEAN)
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit the fascinating Jean-Marie Tjibaou Cultural Centre located approximately 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) northeast of the historic centre of Nouméa, the capital of New Caledonia. It celebrates the vernacular Kanak culture, the indigenous culture of New Caledonia, amidst much political controversy over the independent status sought by some Kanaks from French rule. It opened in June 1998 and was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano and named after Jean-Marie Tjibaou, the leader of the independence movement who was assassinated in 1989 and had had a vision of establishing a cultural centre which blended the linguistic and artistic heritage of the Kanak people.

NEW CALEDONIA, the beautiful MOSELLE MARKET in NOUMEA (PACIFIC OCEAN) ????????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit Moselle Market which is New Caledonia’s biggest market, it’s easy to spot the gay blue-tiled roofs of the five hexagonal pavilions.A popular local institution since its inauguration in 1991, the market is the “go-to” place for fresh produce for locals, and a key attraction for tourists and cruise passengers. Three of the five pavilions are set aside for fresh produce, mostly locally grown. Piles of pineapples, bananas, dragon fruit, passion fruit and other exotics jostle yams, taros, sweet potatoes, plantain bananas and choko, depending on the season. And there are plenty of delicious specialities to tempt you: honey, preserves, fruit or vegetable pickles, pastries, spices and more.

The museums of New Caledonia
With no less than four museums in the city centre and a cultural centre in Tina, the city offers an eclectic range of discovery and culture. A fifth museum should be added to this offering, the galleys museum in Nouville, but it has not opened yet.

Nouvelle Caledonie

Voix off
Voix off
Voix off
Voix off
Voix off
Vous dites en français alors ?
Lambert Weko
Oui, oui.
Voix off
Voix off

The first European to establish a settlement in the vicinity was British trader James Paddon in 1851. Anxious to assert control of the island, the French established a settlement nearby three years later in 1854, moving from Balade in the north of the island. This settlement was initially called Port-de-France and was renamed Nouméa in 1866. The area served first as a penal colony, later as a centre for the exportation of the nickel and gold that was mined nearby.
From 1904 to 1940 Nouméa was linked to Dumbéa and Païta by the Nouméa-Païta railway, the only railway line that ever existed in New Caledonia.
During World War II, Nouméa served as the headquarters of the United States military in the South Pacific. The five-sided U.S. military headquarters complex was adopted after the war as the base for a new regional intergovernmental development organisation: the South Pacific Commission, later known as the Secretariat of the Pacific Community.
The city maintains much of New Caledonia's unique mix of French and old Melanesian culture. Even today the US wartime military influence lingers, both with the warmth that many New Caledonian people feel towards the United States after experiencing the relative friendliness of American soldiers and also with the names of several of the quarters in Nouméa. Districts such as Receiving and Robinson, or even Motor Pool, strike the anglophone ear strangely, until the historical context becomes clear.
