SUMMARY
=======
The Belgian Resistance (French: Résistance belge, Dutch: Belgisch verzet) collectively refers to the resistance movements opposed to the German occupation of Belgium during World War II. Within Belgium, resistance was fragmented between a large number of separate organizations, divided by region and political stances. The resistance included both men and women from both Walloon and Flemish parts of the country. Aside from sabotage of military infrastructure in the country and assassinations of collaborators, these groups also published large numbers of underground newspapers, gathered intelligence and maintained various escape networks that helped Allied airmen trapped behind enemy lines escape from German-occupied Europe.
During the war, it is estimated that approximately five percent of the national population were involved in some form of resistance activity, while some estimates put the number of resistance members killed at over 19,000; roughly 25 percent of its active members.

OUATIA is a social initiative with the support of the Fondation Roi Baudoin (Fonds Alain De Pauw) and Angelika Mlinar, member of the European Parliament.
Thanks to all participants for contributing with their images to this collective work!
The project consisted of two axes:
1 a series of workshop that were given to kids from the suburbs of Brussels in order to teach them how to film and edit high quality videos using their smartphones only.
2 a series of audiovisual portraits to 10 people that live/work in 1070, like Humans from New York but with mobile videos rather than pictures (all videos are available on the official website)
The goal of the initiative was not only to teach low income youngsters a highly valuable digital skill, but in particular to enable them improve the image of Brussels' suburbs using their own point of view (as an antidote to what has happened to Molenbeek).
The wish was to turn upside-down the biased representation of cradle of terrorism given by national/international media and politics.

Gov't backed report blames administration for cooperation with Nazis' persecution of Jews

The lack of administrative and legal preparations for a second occupation, but also a xenophobe culture, sometimes anti-Semitic, of the leading elite and also the democratic deficit, can be considered decisive. The Belgian State adopted a docile attitude by providing, in various areas, collaboration with a disastrous policy towards the Jewish population, unworthy of a democracy.

I would say this has to be a lesson for the future. Always you have to take into consideration the other man. He might be different than you but if you don't care, some dramas can happen. Like the dramas of the Second World War. I think this is very, very important what you heard today.

13. SOUNDBITE: (French) Philippe Markiewicz, President of C.C.O.J.B. (Coordination Committee of Belgian Jewish Organizations)
In this report you see that there was an important collaboration at all levels of the Belgian state. But you also have to see that there were some administrations which had a remarkable attitude and saved Jews.

15. SOUNDBITE: (English) Eric de Steckx, member of Belgian Senate
The objective is that we know about our own history. Both as Belgians and as Europeans. It is very important for Europeans, I think, to know what happened in our own countries. And there is a tendency to blame it exclusively on the Nazis and the Germans, which are, of course, the main culprits for what happened. But this wouldn't have been possible without the collaboration of national and local authorities in many occupied territories. And I think 60 years after the war, that could be said.

STORYLINE:
A groundbreaking, Belgian government-backed report released on Tuesday accused Belgian authorities and the ruling elite of collaborating with the Nazi persecution of Jews during World War II.
The Belgian State adopted a docile attitude by providing, in various areas, collaboration with a disastrous policy towards the Jewish population, unworthy of a democracy, said the report, entitled Submissive Belgium.
Parliamentarians and Jewish representatives sat in silence in the Belgian Senate, as chief researcher Rudi Van Doorslaer read for 50 minutes through the conclusions of the damning report.
Senate chairwoman Anne-Marie Lizin condemned the cowardliness of the Belgian government during the 1940-1944 occupation.
Some 50-thousand Jews lived in Belgium in the 1930s and about half were exterminated in the Holocaust.
The first reactions to the 1,116-page report were positive.
Although Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt had already recognised the level of collaboration over the past years, it was the first time it has been presented in such detail.
The study will be published in a commercially-published book in May.
During the war, in many cases, that deteriorated into collaboration with the persecution of Jews.
