Varadero Travel Guide - Cuba Unforgettable Adventure
Varadero Travel Guide - Cuba Unforgettable Adventure
Varadero is a relatively exclusive part of Cuba, abundant with private hotels, gorgeous beaches and the country's only full golf course. The fantastic beaches with clear turquoise warm water makes this an island lovers paradise. Many visitors do not stray far from their package tour hotel. Depending on how close to the town of Varadero your hotel is located, many opportunities to explore either on foot or with a vehicle are present. Visitors staying at Varadero beach hotels (pretty much from the Internacional Hotel or past) end up walking the beach. Any trip to town will require a ride. Those staying in Varadero town have many options on foot.
There is a double-decker open-on-top bus that runs on a regular schedule from the tip of the peninsula (up by the Blau Marina Hotel and Princessa del Mar) all the way into the town of Varadero, with stops at the International Centre (shopping mall with about 100 stores, and restaurants), the open-air marketplace, and most major hotels. Look for the blue sign-posts to indicate stops, routing, and schedules. 5cuc gets you a day pass that you can use as much as you want goes along the whole peninsula. Watch out for the palm tree branches when sitting on the open top, the branches may whack you in the head.
Beach Vendors are abundant on the beaches bracketing the resorts. Their carts are built up from a bicycle with many shelves and hooks to display their wares while easily rolling along the beach. Haggling is not as common in Cuba as it is in the Dominican but it can be done.
Many packages are all-inclusive at major resorts, especially those further up the peninsula. These cater primarily to North American tourists, who make up the bulk of visitors. Some of them do offer room/hotel packages (EP, or European Plan), but they are becoming harder to find. Most hotels past the golf course are all-inclusive by circumstance, as there are few nearby restaurants. There is a very good restaurant at the Marina, and several at the International Shopping Centre. The clubhouse at the Varadero Golf Course (this was the old Dupont Mansion) has an extensive menu and a lovely setting overlooking the ocean on one side, the golf course on the other.
In the town of Varadero, there is everything from open-air marketplace-type food stalls to the local version of fast food. In town you can find: Pollo Loco (pronounced Po-Yo Lo-Ko, or crazy chickens), hamburguesas con queso (cheeseburgers), sandwiches (surprisingly, pressed Cuban sandwiches are hard to find), and the odd pizza joint. There are also a few restaurants serving sit-down dinners and lunches. Chicken, pork and fish are the most frequent items, but beef is not hard to find. Menus are usually posted outside.
Varadero has by far the biggest diversity of hotels in Cuba, you will find whole range of accommodation from little hotels to well known international chains like Melia, Sandals, Iberostar or the local Cubanacan. Cubans can be found staying in Hotels of the Islazul or Horizontes brand. These hotels can be quite spartan if affordable. The experience may well be worth the inconvenience, although mingling is officially discouraged. The horseshoe shaped Hotel Islazul Herradura is a fine example.

Varadero receives more than 1 million tourists annually. Varadero is primarily visited by European and Canadian tourists. The number of U.S. tourists visiting Varadero, although increasing, has been limited because of the U.S. government restrictions. In addition to its most valued resource, the beach, Varadero has natural attractions such as caves and a chain of easily accessed virgin cays. There are also cultural, historical and environmental attractions in the vicinity, such as the cities of Matanzas and Cárdenas, the Zapata Peninsula and the resort of San Miguel de los Baños. Varadero, which is a free port, also possesses facilities for scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, yachting and other water sports.

Cardenas, I love that little city, just 16 km from Varadero, look this place
I can recommend to go to Matanzas
and Cardesnas
, if you want know , how the real live of Cuba is, if you just stay in Varadero it is not the real Cuba live. Of Course Havana, Cienfuegos, Santa Clara and Trinidad was also nice, but this are organized trips. For me, to make it by self is really easy and secure. I was always alone on this trip, I never had a bad and unsafe feeling. You can see I made photos, videos everywhere, but please ask before you make photos in an shop...In Cuba the Tourists have cuc the native pesos. If you make a such trip take just 0,25 0,5 or 1 cuc with you for by some staff!!! The people can not change!
I made my first tour with a native person of cube which me invite in her home. After this I know how it worked and I went more times alone to Matanzas and Cardenas. You should be able to speak basic Spanish if you make a trip by bus, that you are able to ask for bathroom, if you use a Taxi just say Matanzas or Cardenas called principal (Main Street) and in Matanzas and Cardenas are many Taxis to bring you back to Varadero. You can trust me, that works without any problems, you just say Varadero and the number of your street where you stay. That is all.
You have to bargain with the taxi driver. The via Azul bus, that is the official bus which tourist can use will be use for 10 Cuc a single tour, so I think nearly what I taxi also want. (nearly 40 km from Varadero) So far I know is it not possible to go to Cárdenas by via Azul bus.(it is just 20 km from Varadero) maybe 5 to 7 cuc should be ok. I used the bus and paid just 1 Cuc for one tour. But to tell the truth, it is not allowed for the bus driver to take you with him. I like adventure and of course for my safety I had 10 cuc on my side, that I am sure I come back to the hotel I liked Cardenas more. You just need to go to the museum you can go inside cost 5 Cuc and than walk the way where lot of horse and stores are. Have fun! And let a message here if you did it !Take all what you need with to Cuba many thinks really expensive like shampoo 8 Euro, or also mosquito protection was in months of November helpful.
And let a message here if you did it !

La Casa del Ron, The House of rum. Varadero - Cuba
A visit to Cuba will be incomplete without sampling its famous rum and there is no other place in Varadero that offers a better selection of this Cuban specialty. A museum of sorts, Casa Del Ron offers a peek into Cuba’s spirited history and indulgent tastes.

Old Havana (Spanish La Habana Vieja) is the city center (downtown) - Museo de la Revolucion (Museum of the revolution), Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro
Another video Havana city tour, part 7
Havana (/həˈvænə/; Spanish La Habana) is the capital city, largest city, province, major port, and leading commercial centre of Cuba. The city proper has a population of 2.1 million inhabitants, and it spans a total of 728.26 km2 (281.18 sq mi) – making it the largest city by area, the most populous city, and the third largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean region. The city extends mostly westward and southward from the bay, which is entered through a narrow inlet and which divides into three main harbours: Marimelena, Guanabacoa and Atarés. The sluggish Almendares River traverses the city from south to north, entering the Straits of Florida a few miles west of the bay.
The city of Havana was founded by the Spanish in the 16th century and due to its strategic location it served as a springboard for the Spanish conquest of the continent becoming a stopping point for the treasure-laden Spanish galleons on the crossing between the New World and the Old World. King Philip II of Spain granted Havana the title of City in 1592.Walls as well as forts were built to protect the old city. The sinking of the U.S. battleship Maine in Havana's harbor in 1898 was the immediate cause of the Spanish–American War.
Contemporary Havana can essentially be described as three cities in one: Old Havana, Vedado and the newer suburban districts. The city is the center of the Cuban government, and home to various ministries, headquarters of businesses and over 90 diplomatic offices. The current mayor is Marta Hernández from the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC). In 2009, the city/province had the 3rd highest income in the country.
The city attracts over a million tourists annually, the Official Census for Havana reports that in 2010 the city was visited by 1,176,627 international tourists, a 20.0% increase from 2005. The historic centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.The city is also noted for its history, culture, architecture and monuments.
