Places to see in ( Marsala - Italy ) Isola di Mozia
Mozia (or even Mothia , Motya ) was an ancient Phoenician city , located on the island of San Pantaleo , in the Stagnone di Marsala . The island is located in front of the western coast of Sicily , between the Isola Grande and the mainland, and belongs to the Whitaker Foundation .
Mozia was probably interested in the explorations of the Phoenician merchant-sailors , who went to the western Mediterranean Sea , starting from the end of the 12th century BC : it had to represent a landing point and a commercial base morphologically very similar to the Phoenician city of Tire . The ancient name in Phoenician was Mtw , Mtw or Hmtw , as is clear from the monetary legends ; the name reported in Greek , Motye , Μοτύη , is also mentioned by Thucydides and by Diodorus Siculus. Around the middle of the eighth century BC , with the beginning of the Greek colonization in Sicily , Thucydides reports that the Phoenicians withdrew to the western part of the island, more exactly in the three cities of their foundation: Mozia, Solunto and Palermo . Archaeological evidence of a settlement from the late eighth century BC , preceded by a sporadic and rather modest protohistoric phase . The fortifications surrounding the island may perhaps be linked to the Greek expeditions in western Sicily of Pentatlo and Dorieo in the 6th century BC
The entrance to the city (Porta Nord) was articulated through three successive gates, about 22 m from each other, each of which consisted of two side openings separated by a central wall. The best preserved structures are related to the outer door, which perhaps was pertinent, as a crowning frieze, the sculptural group of two cats biting a bull, kept in the museum.
Inside the walls, not far from the North Gate stands the sacred area of the Cappiddazzu sanctuary (in Sicilian cappellaccio, used to indicate a wide-brimmed hat). In a first phase (beginning of the 7th century BC ) there are dated a series of ditches dug into the rock and about 30 cm deep, placed inside a larger pit, in which bones of sheep and cattle were found , probably used for the sacrifices.
The tofet of Mozia (about 60 m long) is located on the northern coast, in the space between the sea and the walls. It remained in use probably from the origins of the settlement ( 7th century BC ), until after the siege of Syracuse, in the 3rd century BC In these centuries three main phases took place.
The Casermetta owes its name to a building leaning on the outside of a large tower of the walls, on the south coast, between the Mosaic House and the South Gate. The Kothon has been identified as a sacred pool connected to the adjacent Temple discovered and excavated by the La Sapienza University Mission of Rome from 2002 to 2010.

Palermo is the capital of the Italian island of Sicily. The 12th-century Palermo Cathedral houses royal tombs, while the huge neoclassical Teatro Massimo is known for opera performances. Also in the center are the Palazzo dei Normanni, a royal palace started in the 9th century, and the Cappella Palatina, with Byzantine mosaics. Busy markets include the central Ballarò street market and the Vucciria, near the port.
Palermo is a city of Southern Italy, the capital of both the autonomous region of Sicily and the Metropolitan City of Palermo. The city is noted for its history, culture, architecture and gastronomy, playing an important role throughout much of its existence; it is over 2,700 years old. Palermo is located in the northwest of the island of Sicily, right by the Gulf of Palermo in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Palermo lies in a basin, formed by the Papireto, Kemonia and Oreto rivers. The basin was named the Conca d'Oro (the Golden Basin) by the Arabs in the 9th century. The city is surrounded by a mountain range which is named after the city itself. These mountains face the Tyrrhenian Sea. Palermo is home to a natural port and offers excellent views to the sea, especially from Monte Pellegrino.
Palermo currently has an international airport, and a significant underground economy. In fact, for cultural, artistic and economic reasons, Palermo was one of the largest cities in the Mediterranean and is now among the top tourist destinations in both Italy and Europe. It is the main seat of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale. The city is also going through careful redevelopment, preparing to become one of the major cities of the Euro-Mediterranean area. Roman Catholicism is highly important in Palermitano culture. The Patron Saint of Palermo is Santa Rosalia whose Feast Day is celebrated on 15 July. The area attracts significant numbers of tourists each year and is widely known for its colourful fruit, vegetable and fish markets at the heart of Palermo, known as Vucciria, Ballarò and Capo. UNESCO World Heritage Sites include the Palazzo Reale with the Cappella Palatina, the Chiesa di San Giovanni degli Eremiti, the Chiesa di Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio, the Chiesa di San Cataldo, the Cattedrale di Palermo, the Palazzo della Zisa and the Ponte dell’Ammiraglio. This makes Italy the country with the most UNESCO world heritage sites, and Sicily the region hosting the most within Italy.
