Florence: Fra Angelica and The Museo San Marco
It is worth visiting the setting of the Museum of San Marco for its architecture alone. This consists of the former Dominican convent restored and enlarged to its present size for Cosimo the Elder de' Medici by his favorite architect Michelozzo (1396-1472). Consecrated in 1443, this building was the scene of fervent religious activity, highlighted by personalities such as St. Antonino Pierozzi, Bishop of Florence, the Beato Angelico (c.1400-1450) and, later, Girolamo Savonarola. Fra' Angelico was a Dominican monk who later became Prior of the convent and who decorated in a style perfectly adapted to the architecture of the chapter house, cloister and the brothers' first floor cells.
The museum offers the visitor an example of a perfectly preserved fifteenth century convent, its rational and harmonious plan based on Brunelleschi's innovations. Everything is designed to coordinate and simplify the monastic life within its walls as much in its calm cloister as in the light-filled library, one of the finest interiors of the Renaissance.
On the other hand, the complex also contains the museum of Fra' Angelico's works in the form of frescoed interiors and the panels displayed in the large alms-house. Among the first series, the most famous is the Crucifixion painted in the Chapter House, permeated by the contemplative melancholy found in the refined spirituality of the Dominicans; in the cells, austere yet full of meditative inspiration for the brethren, are the Annunciation, the Three Maries at the Tomb, Noli me tangere and others.
Apart from Angelico's paintings, the museum also has a very beautiful Last Supper frescoed by Ghirlandaio at the end of the fifteenth century, and in its library a fine series of illuminated manuscripts. These were created in the convent in the same spirit of meditative creativity characteristic of Fra' Angelico's work. Savonarola's cell and the one where Cosimo the Elder retired to meditate are both open to the public.

In Renaissance Florence the Dominican Monastery of San Marco was intimately tied to every aspect of city life, from commerce and patronage, to civil broils and foreign invasions, to education and medicine, to the great artists, architects and radical thinkers who earned the Florentine Renaissance its eternal fame. This lecture will explore the monastery’s role as a center of social and spiritual life.

La basilica di San Marco a Firenze è una delle chiese del centro storico cittadino, che domina un'affollata piazza e che fa da punto di riferimento per l'area urbana circostante. La chiesa faceva parte originariamente del grande complesso del convento di San Marco, in cui vissero ed operarono molti fra i più importanti rappresentanti della spiritualità e della cultura quattrocentesca: Cosimo il Vecchio, sant'Antonino, il Beato Angelico, Ambrogio Catarino Politi, Fra Bartolomeo, Tommaso Caccini (noto per aver inquisito Galileo Galilei) e, soprattutto, fra Girolamo Savonarola, che predicò contro la decadenza dei costumi, finendo poi impiccato ed arso in piazza della Signoria nel 1498. Dal 1934 vi dimorò anche il sindaco di Firenze Giorgio La Pira, il cui corpo riposa ancora nel complesso monastico.
Dal 1869 l'ex-convento ospita il Museo Nazionale di San Marco, di cui però non fanno parte né la chiesa né l'attiguo chiostro di San Domenico.

Esploriamo il complesso di San Marco: le celle affrescate, il convento e la chiesa Scopriremo un luogo monumentale ricco di fascino, che conserva al suo interno opere d'arte di grandissimo rilievo; qui sarà possibile tracciare la storia dei tanti uomini illustri dell'Ordine Domenicano che vi hanno soggiornato come il Beato Angelico, Girolamo Savonarola e Fra Bartolomeo per citarne solo alcuni. Proprio da questo convento il Savonarola si scagliava contro la corruzione dei costumi della chiesa del tempo; nella sua cella si possono ancora trovare oggetti a lui appartenuti ed è quindi il luogo più adatto per parlare della sua controversa figura.
