The Museum of the Revolution:
The Museum of the Revolution (Spanish: Museo de la Revolución) is a museum located in the Old Havana section of Havana, Cuba. The museum is housed in what was the Presidential Palace of all Cuban presidents from Mario García Menocal to Fulgencio Batista. It became the Museum of the Revolution during the years following the Cuban revolution.
The former Presidential Palace was designed by the Cuban architect Carlos Maruri and the Belgian architect Paul Belau and was inaugurated in 1920 by President Mario García Menocal. It remained the Presidential Palace until 1959. The building has Neo-Classical elements, and was decorated by Tiffany & Co. of New York.
The museum's Cuban history exhibits are largely devoted to the period of the revolutionary war of the 1950s and to the country's post-1959 history. Portions of the museum are also devoted to pre-revolutionary Cuba, including its War of Independence waged against Spain.
Behind the building lies the Granma Memorial, a large glass enclosure which houses the Granma, the yacht which took Fidel Castro and his revolutionaries from Mexico to Cuba for the revolution. Around the Granma an SA-2 Guideline surface-to-air missile of the type that shot down a U.S. Lockheed U-2 spyplane during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the engine of the U-2 airplane is displayed. There are also various vehicles and tanks used in the revolution displayed. Near the museum is located an SU-100, a Soviet tank destroyer.

Plaza de la Revolución (Revolution Square) is a municipality (or borough) and a square in Havana, Cuba.
The municipality, one of the 15 forming the city, stretches from the square down to the sea at the Malecón and includes the Vedado district.
The Plaza is 31st largest city square in the world (largest city squares), measuring 72000 square meters.
The square is notable as being where many political rallies take place and Fidel Castro and other political figures address Cubans. Fidel Castro has addressed more than a million Cubans on many important occasions, such as 1 May and 26 July each year.
The square is dominated by the José Martí Memorial, which features a 109 m (358 ft) tall tower and an 18 m (59 ft) statue. The National Library, many government ministries, and other buildings are located in and around the Plaza. Located behind the memorial are the closely guarded offices of former President Fidel Castro. Opposite the memorial on the far side of the square is the famous Che Guevara image with his well known slogan of Hasta la Victoria Siempre (Until the Everlasting Victory, Always) that identifies the Ministry of the Interior building.
Construction of the square and the José Martí monument commenced during the Presidency of Fulgencio Batista. The square and the memorial were completed in 1959 (the year Fidel Castro came to power). It was originally called Plaza Cívica (Civic Square). After the Cuban Revolution (1959), it was renamed Plaza de la Revolución or Revolution Square. An elevator allows access the top of the memorial, at 109 m one the tallest points in the city.

I believe it is done to maintain an order and that way they can differentiate one machine, one car, from another. To tell what belongs to the state, what belongs to an individual. For example, the HK is a foreign technician.

STORYLINE
In most countries, your vehicle registration plate may at the most indicate what state or province you are from, but won''t give away much else about you.
But in Cuba, your plate says a lot more than that - in a rainbow of colours and an alphabet soup of letters, anyone who can decipher them will know whether you are Cuban or a foreigner, what you do for a living, and even what rank you hold at work, among other things.
Black plates are for foreign diplomats; Cuban government ministers or heads of top state organisations get white ones.
Maroon plates are rental cars and blue ones are state-owned.
Military vehicles have mint-green plates - but only in the rear, not front and back like everyone else - and olive-green ones are for vehicles issued by the Ministry of the Interior, including Fidel Castro''s armoured Mercedes.
Most of the half-century-old American roadsters which make the island''s potholed streets a moving museum have banana-yellow licence plates denoting vehicles owned by ordinary Cubans.
Yellow tags containing the letter K, however, are for foreigners married to a Cuban and who own their own car.
Caramel licence plates are for heads of government-run businesses, while foreign journalists, religious leaders and Cubans working for overseas firms have neon-orange plates.
This time, K means the company - not the driver - owns the vehicle.
Finally, red provisional plates allow vehicles to circulate while authorities sort out just what colour tag they should get.
Wichel Guerra, a chauffeur at the National Office of Statistics, explained how it works.

The last-three digits on diplomatic plates often denote the professional rank of the driver.

Havana Travel Guide - Stunning Cuba time
Havana is the capital city of Cuba, and one of the fourteen provinces of the Republic of Cuba. Spanish colonial architecture in its 16th-century Old Havana core includes the Castillo de la Real Fuerza, a fort and maritime museum. The National Capitol Building is an iconic 1920s landmark. Also in Old Havana is the baroque Catedral de San Cristóbal and Plaza Vieja, whose buildings reflect the city’s vibrant architectural mix.
As a tourist, the most convenient way of getting around Havana is by taxi. Some of the taxis are old American Chevys from the 1950's, others are (somewhat) newer Russian Ladas, whilst most tourist taxis are modern Peugeots, Skodas and even Mercedes.
Cuba has a tropical climate, with warm, humid weather all year long, though cold temperatures have occured in the mountains before. Being surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico, Cuba has warm water year round, with winter water temperatures at 24C, spring and fall temperatures at 26C and summer temperatures at 28C.
Visit a live cigar factory. One offering tours is at the intersection of Peñalver and San Carlos (just 1 mile southwest of Old Havana La Habana Vieja). Walk along the Prado street in the evening. Great public space - unfortunately not illuminated at night. The Prado hums with street life, cafes and charm.
Walk along El Malecón. A favorite stroll for tourists and locals, a walk along the Malecon runs along the main streets of Havana and provides stunning views of the Bay. Enjoy the glory of La Habana Vieja (The Old Town), some of it faded and crumbling. Plaza de la Revolución is a huge square dominated by a statue and monument of Jose Marti and the iconic image of Che Guevara adorning the Ministry of the Interior.
Plaza de Armas. Spacious and elegant, the square is surrounded by baroque constructions that give it a authentic colonial milieu. Castillo de la Real Fuerza is the oldest bastioned fortress in the New World and has now reopened as a Cuba’s premier maritime museum.

Thousands of East Timorese attended a memorial mass for Pope John Paul II in the capital Dili on Wednesday.
East Timorese Foreign Minister Jose Ramos Horta and East Timorese Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri joined the worshippers in prayer.
More than 90 percent of the population in East Timor are Catholic.
Government leaders say they will build a statue honouring the man who championed the country's independence struggle.
East Timor became independent in 2002 after more than four centuries of foreign rule.
The pope was particularly well-liked by East Timorese, having visited in 1989 during the country's three-decade occupation by Indonesia.
East Timor and the Philippines are the only states in East Asia with a majority Catholic population. Portuguese traders brought Catholicism to Timor in the 16th century.

I understand that in Spanish folklore the spider is regarded as a negative thing, but for Louise it should be emphasised that it's positive. For us to install this spider here is a way to bring this image to the Cuban public and we want the Cuban public to understand that for us this is the symbol of the continuing cultural ties between the two countries; between Cuba and the United States. Louise Bourgeois is an American citizen and has been for a long time and we hope people will use this to get to know one of our greatest artists.

I think this is a very eloquent demonstration of the reaction from people of culture to the barbaric acts the European Union promoted in breaking cultural exchanges with Cuba. Any one with a significant understanding of art, which is a form of communication, it's mutually enriching, a back-and-forth trip, would reject that. It's a sign of total lack of common sense. A lack of the most elemental sense of culture.

STORYLINE
Cuban art gallery organisers manoeuvred through a web of Cold War politics and bureaucratic red tape this week to bring Louise Bourgeois' renowned giant spider sculpture to Havana for the first major show by a contemporary American artist in the communist country.
U.S. restrictions against the island meant organisers had to ship the marble and metal sections of the 12-ton work by boat from Canada, rather than the United States.
The United States and Cuba have not had diplomatic relations for more than four decades and last summer's tightening of trade and travel restrictions by the Bush administration have made cultural exchanges between the two countries more difficult.
Organisers also had to deal with the idiosyncrasies of this Caribbean island. Just hours before the Friday evening opening, the bronze, stainless steel and marble pieces that snap together to form the 34-foot-tall (10-meter-tall) spider dubbed Maman _ French for mother _ had not been assembled.
The gigantic arachnid wasn't expected to be fully assembled until the weekend.
Despite last minute headaches, Phil Larratt-Smith, who travelled to Havana from New York to curate the show, was excited to give Cubans a better understanding of one of the world's most important living artists.
The French-born American abstract expressionist has work in the collections of some of the world's most important museums.
Bourgeois was the first American woman to have a retrospective at New York's Museum of Modern Art in 1982, and received a U.S. National Medal of Arts in 1997.
Now 93, Bourgeois will not come to Havana for the show, entitled Uno y Otros, or One and Others, running through April 26. She rarely travels now, preferring to remain in New York and labour on new works.

STORYLINE
Cuba is preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Fidel Castro's communist revolution on Saturday.
In 1953, Castro and his group of rebels made a failed attempt to raid the Moncada Barracks in Santiago.
The survivors of this mission, who are known as Moncadistas, will be honoured at the celebrations.

In there (during visits to the cigar-making factories in Cuba), notebooks and pens were banned. At night in our hotels we noted exactly how the process begins, how it proceeds, how they make them. We had an image inside our heads.

STORYLINE
Cuban President Raul Castro continued his visit to France on Tuesday with a visit to Paris' Musee de l'homme, an anthropology museum focusing on human evolution.
Earlier in the day he held a series of meetings with senior French officials on the second day of a state visit aimed at boosting business ties between the two countries.
Castro has been received with all honours for the first state visit ever of a Cuban president to France.
His schedule in Paris on Tuesday included meetings with UNESCO chief Irina Bokova, Prime Minister Manuel Valls and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo.
The Cuban delegation has also participated in a business forum with French companies as the Caribbean island's economy opens up.

Global Terrorism Run By Cuban Communists
The Intelligence Directorate (Spanish: Dirección de Inteligencia, or DI, also known as G2 and formerly known as Dirección General de Inteligencia or DGI) is the main state intelligence agency of the government of Cuba. The DI was founded in late 1961 by Cuba's Ministry of the Interior shortly after the Cuban Revolution. The DI is responsible for all foreign intelligence collection and comprises six divisions divided into two categories, which are the Operational Divisions and the Support Divisions. Manuel Redbeard Piñeiro was the first director of the DI in 1961, and his term lasted until 1964. Another top leader who directed the famous office, located on Linea and A, Vedado, was the now retired Div. General, Jesus Bermudez Cutiño. He was transferred from being the chief of the Army Intelligence (DIM) to the Ministry of Interior after the corruption trials and executions of Arnaldo Ochoa and Jose Abrantes Fernandez in 1989. The current head of the DI is Brig. Gen. Eduardo Delgado Rodriguez. The total number of people working for the DI is about 15,000.

Cuba has promised to lift a nine-year ban on new licences for private taxis, authorising a measure of private enterprise on the communist-run island and potentially legalising thousands of drivers who now earn unauthorised livings using their classic American cars to give rides.
The move marks the government of new President Raul Castro's latest break with the policies of his older brother Fidel, who spent years denouncing drivers of gypsy taxis, saying they were getting rich illegally while encouraging a black market for stolen gasoline.
State radio reported that Transportation Minister Jorge Luis Sierra said during a closed parliamentary commission meeting that officials would soon begin authorising new private taxis, doing away with 1999 moratorium.
How many licences would be issued was not clear, but Sierra said the programme would focus first on rural areas.
Unlicensed taxis perform an important public service by helping to fill gaps in Cuba's woeful public transportation system.
While the government operates a small fleet of expensive, modern taxis geared toward tourists, permission for ordinary Cubans to buy new cars is tightly controlled. But drivers can use vehicles they owned before Fidel Castro's revolution in 1959, giving rise to the island's reputation as a moving museum of classic American cars.
Many of those hulking '57 Chevys and 1940 Packards are now used as taxis - either licensed or otherwise - and drivers modify interior seating to squeeze in extra passengers.
I think it's good that they give licences because that way everyone has the right to work without committing any illegalities, said Enemelio Trujillo, a licensed taxi driver who spoke in front of a powder blue 1950s Chrysler.
According to Radio Rebelde, Sierra said the government planned to provide a salary to newly licensed drivers, as well free gasoline, something it does not do for licensed taxis already on the road. But new rules would assign recently licensed drivers specific routes and fares, obligating them to operate like tiny buses, the transportation minister said.

CUBAN SINGER'S FUNERAL
Thousands of townsfolk lined a rural highway in western Cuba Wednesday evening to say goodbye to country singer Polo Montanez as a funeral cortege carried his body to a humble cemetery near his hometown.
Popularly known as the Guajiro Natural the natural country boy for the title of his last musical hit, Montanez died just before midnight on Tuesday from head injuries suffered in a car crash outside Havana. He was 47.
Montanez was returning from a family party the night of Nov. 20 when his car collided with a tractor-trailer, killing his 25-year-old stepson, Mirel Gonzalez Garcia, and injuring his wife, Adis Garcia.
Montanez, born Fernando Borrego in 1955, over the last three years enjoyed a meteoric rise in popularity both here and in Latin America, especially in Colombia, where one of his records went platinum.
The gathering of friends and family took place in the small town of Las Terrazas, Montañez' hometown in the western province of Pinar del Rio, about 90 kilometers (55 miles) west of Havana.
The wake and funeral was also attended by Cuba's Minister of Culture, Abel Prieto.
Hundreds of funeral wreaths crowded the building where the wake was held, including one sent by President Fidel Castro.
Montanez, known for his typical straw hat, a vest worn over his shirt, and a broad smile, refused to give up his house and friends in the country after he soared to musical fame. I don't like to live in the cities, they seem so big, Montanez said in an interview in February.
It was in this region that Montanez began his musical career in 1994, when a local hotel was hiring musical groups.
For the previous two decades he had been composing his songs practically in secret. He was discovered by the international record company Lusafrica in
1999 and his rise to fame began.
Throughout Wednesday, Cuban radio stations played Montanez's music as word of his death spread across the island. A local band played a solemn funeral march as the cortege carried him to the cemetery later in the day.

Architectural Festival Held
Pyongyang, May 6 (KCNA) -- The 11th May 21 Architectural Festival was held here from May 3 to 6.
The festival proceeded in such forms as prize contests of city formation planning and architectural design, design for updating light industrial factories and dwelling house design, public presentation of scientific papers on architecture and construction and competition for producing architectural designing program and multi-media.
Presented to it were at least 200 pieces of works for architectural design prize contest, more than 230 scientific papers and over 30 architectural designing programs and multi-media selected at provincial and city architectural festivals.
Drawing visitors were designs of the central part of Pyongyang, provincial, city and county seat formation blueprints suited to the features of local areas as they showed well the architecture development in the era of Songun.
Designs of large flower gardens and fountain parks and various decoration designs were produced in a peculiar way.
Its closing ceremony took place at the People's Palace of Culture Friday.
Present there were Pae Tal Jun, minister of State Construction Control, Pak Kil U, vice-chairman of the C.C., the Union of Architects of Korea, and officials, architects, technicians, teachers and researchers in the architecture and construction fields.

Clearly shaken and his eyes filled with tears, acting President Raul Castro paid his respects Tuesday to his late wife Vilma Espin Guillois, a fellow rebel fighter who served for decades as first lady of the Cuban revolution.
Raul Castro, who has governed Cuba nearly 11 months during his brother Fidel's convalescence, was among top Cuban leaders who filed past a huge black-and-white photograph of Espin atop a red, white and blue Cuban flag, each depositing a pink or yellow rose in her memory.
Cuban state television showed several leaders embracing Raul or shaking his hand during the ceremony inside Havana's Jose Marti Memorial after his wife's death Monday at age 77.
Authorities did not give a cause of death for Espin, but she was said to suffer from severe circulatory problems in recent years.
Formal homages to Espin were scheduled for all day Tuesday across the island of 11.2 (m) million, and Cuban flags will be lowered to half mast at all public buildings and military bases.

A historic black-and-white photograph of Espin in military uniform, flanked by her husband, was posted Tuesday morning on the front door of the headquarters of the Federation of Cuban Women, which she helped found more than four decades ago.
Espin's death was likely to have a profound emotional impact on the Castro brothers at a critical moment in Cuban history.
She is the most important revolutionary figure to die since Celia Sanchez, another rebel fighter who was Fidel's closest confidant, succumbed to cancer in 1980.
No state funeral will be held.
According to Espin's wishes, her ashes will be placed in a mausoleum in eastern Cuba's Sierra Maestra mountains that contains the remains of other rebel fighters.
Espin was born in Santiago on April 7, 1930, the daughter of a lawyer for the Bacardi rum distillery there.

Cuba Arrests Four Miami-based Exiles Suspected Of Attack Plot
Cuba has arrested four Miami-based Cuban exiles suspected of planning attacks on military installations with the goal of promoting anti-government violence on the communist-run island, the interior ministry said. Labeling the suspects terrorists, it said in a statement late on Tuesday that they were linked to Luis Posada Carriles, a Cuban exile and former CIA operative living in Miami.
