Museo Sang Bata sa Negros 2014
The Museo Sang Bata sa Negros (MSBN) is a hands-on, interactive museum for children focused on the marine environment. It is located on the shoreline directly facing the 32,000-hectare Sagay marine protected area, locally called SMR (Sagay Marine Reserve). Close to 98% of the people living in and around this area are dependent on the marine resources for their food and livelihood.
Through it's Junior Guide program for kids ages 8-12, the children of Sagay become equipped and empowered to be advocates of environmental stewardship in their community. They learn not just about the marine environment but develop life skills that help them build confidence, excel in school and become agents of transformation in society.
Museo Sang Bata Sa Negros is a member of Samp - The Intercontinental Museum Network.

Tahum Epi 6 Sagay City
Sagay can be identified in the map of Negros Occidental because of its ice-cream cone shape sliced from the northern tip of Negros. It is bounded in the north by Asuncion Pass and the Visayan Sea; the City of Talisay and Municipality of Calatrava in the south; cities of Cadiz and Silay in the west and the City of Escalante and Municipality of Toboso in the east. The name of the city comes from the semi-spherical shell called sigay, which can be found in the area.

Eco-Kalans, Kitchen & Feeding Center forTyphoon Haiyan Victims in Sagay, Negros Occ. Jan.24-25, 2014
The current video is a sequel to the earlier YouTube video titled Eco-Kalans to Typhoon Haiyan Victims in Old Sagay, Negros Occ., Philippines, Dec. 27-28, 2013 with the URL
March 31, 2014
Dear Friends,
Going on a relief mission to a typhoon disaster area in the Philippines has been the most challenging pursuit the Eco-Kalan Project has attempted , and most rewarding in terms of the lives we have touched and promises for a better tomorrow. On November 8, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan (locally called Yolanda) hit the central Visayan islands of Samar, Leyte, Cebu, Negros and Panay. Since the Eco-Kalan Project is based in Dumaguete City in the Province of Negros Oriental (eastern side of Negros), the northern cities of Cadiz and Sagay in Negros Occidental (western side) were the logical choices for our mission.
The current video documents the establishment and inauguration of an Eco-Kalan Relief Kitchen and Feeding Center in San Pedro Beach, Old Sagay. The Eco-Kalan Kitchen & Feeding Center was built with donated building materials from Dr. Kees Vermeer and Dr. Ward Stevens of British Columbia, Canada; and with volunteer labor from the local community. One side of the kitchen is the dapugan or cooking area equipped with 8 Eco-Kalans -C clay stoves which are designed for commercial/institutional cooking. The Eco-Kalan Kitchen has the capability to feed with ease the entire 2,000 + people of Purok San Pedro Beach in times of natural disasters such as Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda). At the lunch given during the eco-kalan presentation of January 25, 2014, the kitchen volunteers from San Pedro Beach, along with the Eco-Kalan Team, have proven they can cook and serve over 2,000 meals without suffering heat exhaustion and using only $5 WORTH OF FIREWOOD. With young mothers at the helm, the kitchen has become a Sunday Feeding Center for young children and the Chapel across the road, a place to give thanks and eat a warm meal. With a donation from Dr. Ward Stevens, work on developing a barrel oven fired by an eco-kalan has commenced. A prototype for this oven was built at the Aprovecho Stove Camp last year by my friend, Dr. Larry Winiarski, known as the Father of Rocket Stoves, a class of stoves to which the eco-kalan belongs. The addition of the barrel oven to the Eco-Kalan Kitchen will provide the women at San Pedro Beach with a wide range of cooked and baked food products that they can sell. And for the fishermen, my head is titillating with ideas for a fish dryer, fired by an eco-kalan, that will one day soon dry their fish on a rainy day.
None of the above would have taken place without the support from my friends and partners at the 302nd Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army based in Tanjay, Negros Oriental and from the 62nd Infantry Battalion based in Sagay; from ONCAN (Oriental Negros Children's Advocacy Network) and the Social Action Center of the Catholic Diocese of Dumaguete; and from REAP-Canada. To these friends and donors to the Eco-Kalan Project, I offer my deepest gratitude and heartfelt thanks.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Arrieta Vermeer
