The Amfiteatre Romà is a 2nd-century arena facing the Mediterranean, the Necropolis contains Roman tombs, and traces of the Forum stand among the alleys of the walled, medieval Old Town. A walkway along the ramparts, the Passeig Arqueològic, has sweeping views of the city.
Tarragona is a port city located in northeast Spain on the Costa Daurada by the Mediterranean Sea. Tarragona is the capital of the Province of Tarragona, and part of Tarragonès and Catalonia. Geographically, Tarragona is bordered on the north by the Province of Barcelona and the Province of Lleida.
The Roman ruins of Tarraco have been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Part of the bases of large Cyclopean walls near the Cuartel de Pilatos are thought to pre-date the Romans. The building just mentioned, a prison in the 19th century, is said to have been the palace of Augustus. A circus c. 450 metres (1,480 ft) long, was built over in the area now called Plaça de la Font, though portions of it are still to be traced. Throughout the town Latin, and even apparently Phoenician, inscriptions on the stones of the houses mark the material used for buildings in the town.
Two ancient monuments, at some little distance from Tarragona , have, however, fared rather better. Tarragona is home to a large port and the Rovira i Virgili University. Much of its economic activity comes from a large number of chemical industries located south of the city. The main living heritage is the Popular Retinue, a great parade of dances, bestiary and spoken dances- and the human towers. They specially participate in Santa Tecla Festival. They are so popular in Tarragona and also in all Catalonia that they have got their own home. It is called Casa de la Festa, Festivities House, where you can visit them all the year.
A number of beaches, some awarded a Blue Flag designation, line the Mediterranean coast near the city of Tarragona . Tarragona is located near the resort of Salou and the amusement park PortAventura, one of the largest in Europe. The city of Tarragona is served by Tarragona railway station, and is located a few kilometres away from Reus Airport, which has many low-cost destinations and charter-flights (over a million passengers per year).

Gladiator fight in the Tarraco Viva festival, The Roman festival in Tarragona, Spain on 27.05.2018. With the explanation of how they fought, how they were judged and how they were killed. The explanations are in Spanish but it's still interesting to watch and also some words are internetional so enjoy))) This festival happens every year in May during two weeks. There are always a lot of workshops, presentations and performances and the museums and places of interests are for free. At least last year and this year when I went there. Everything is in Catalan or Spanish so it's advisable to have a friend who understands one of these languages or both))) Or you can just enjoy)) The town is absolutely amazing, just gorgeous with a lot of anciant history and charming beaches.
BTW, I normally use airbnb when I travel and if you want to try it, here's the 25 euros discount for your first trip. You just have to register following the link and your booking should cost more than 65 euros. The number can slightly change with time. But it's usually around this ammount. You get the discount no matter what currancy you use and I also get a little discount for my next trip. Smaller but still, it's a win-win situation))) Here's the link:

Durada aprox. 45 min.

Pyramids/Sphinx Giza Plateau 2013
On our way to see the enigmatic Sphinx again and some up close views of the Pyramids.
As I have said you do not realise how really enormous these structures are until you are right next to them. Even more amazing is that the ancient Egyptians who built them had nothing more than primitive bronze age tools and human muscle power. Wonder what they could have built if they had access to modern technology.
The Sphinx is just as famous as the Pyramids but I think it is rather peculiar as it's head it totally out of proportion to its Lion body.
As always Mary Anne lets us in on some interesting information regarding the Sphinx.
I just cannot wait to go back to Giza someday soon to look at these monuments once again.
