house wine museum in Yalta
The Southern Coast of Crimea is notable not only for amazing landscapes, unique nature and the range of priceless historical and architectural monuments, but also for its famous all over the world wines. Crimean wine-making is centered in Massandra winery that is one of the oldest and largest wine-making enterprises in CIS. Today, everyone has an opportunity to visit ancient galleries of wine cellars, to see the creation process of the famous Massandra wines and to appreciate their taste during wine-tasting.
The Massandra wines’ history started in the middle of the 19th century, when the small settlement Massandra, situated near Yalta, passed to the Count’s Mikhail Vorontsov’s ownership. He bought the best vine sorts in Europe and founded a wine-making industry here. The best experts were invited from France in order to sustain it. However, Massandra winery’s wine production reached industrial scale only fifty years later, when the manor became Imperator house’s property.
In 1892, the Imperator Alexander the Third invited the main wine-maker of Crimean and Caucasian feudal lands Count Lev Golitsyn, who had already been known as the founder of wine-making enterprises in the New World, to Massandra. It was he who ordered to build the first underground winery with tunnels in Russia in order to produce and ripen table and dessert wines. Its construction lasted four years.
Constructed from the light-grey Crimean stone, the Massandra winery’s building is reminiscent of a medieval castle with tower and forged iron gates. The wine cellars are cut underneath it: the fan of seven 150 meter-long tunnels goes deep into the rock and forms galleries with stone niches for many-year-old vintage wines. This natural storehouse has unique microclimate with stable temperature of +12 degrees Celsius all the year round. This temperature is considered to be ideal for high quality dessert and fortified wines’ storage. In addition, winery’s building has dessert wine products’ aging shop, wine-making museum and tasting rooms.
Today, the Massandra winery has one of the largest wine collections in the world that numbers over a million vintage wine bottles, including 10 to 200 and more year-old wines. There are several truly unique items: for instance, Sherry de la Frontera, produced in 1775 and considered to be the oldest wine in the world. Massandra winery has its own museum stock that includes up to three bottles of each wine from winery’s collection.
It is possible to visit the plant only as part of guided tour. Its program suggests visiting Tsar’s cellar with museum gallery of vintage wines, middle cellar, dessert wine products’ aging shop and wine-making museum, and tasting vintage wines.
Getting here. There are two options. The first one is to go from Yalta bus terminal to Massandra settlement, and then to follow the guide signs to the winery. The second one is more convenient: to take the route bus №40 from Yalta flea market directly to the winery.

NAASR Armenian Studies | Levon Chookaszian | Armenians of Crimea and Romania Viewed Through Art
The Armenians of The Crimea and Romania As Seen Through Their Art
Dr. Levon Chookaszian
The study of the artistic legacy of the Armenians in medieval Crimea and Romania allows for the reconstruction and imagining, to a certain degree, of a broader picture, a kind of mosaic of the culture of immigrants from Armenia. The Armenian churches, monasteries, and illustrated manuscripts are the main art works testifying to the presence of Armenians in medieval Crimea and Romania and their cultural activity there. Prof. Levon Chookaszian explores this rich, but for many, little known cultural heritage.
Prof. Levon Chookaszian is the UNESCO Professor of Armenian Art History at Yerevan State University and one of the leading authorities in the world on Armenian art. He is the author of two monographs: one on the art of 13th century Armenian miniaturist Grigor (Grigor Tsaghkogh, 1986), and the other on the art of the painter Arshag Fetvadjian (Arshag Fetvadjian, 2011). He has published four hundred articles and reviews for scholarly journals and newspapers on Armenian art. Chookaszian has taught at Yerevan State University since 1978 and is one of the founders of the department of art history. In 1996 he established the UNESCO Chair of Armenian Art History. Since 1992 he has delivered around two hundred lectures at universities, libraries, and museums across the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Italy, Lebanon, Greece, Germany, France, Hungary, and Romania.

Our Crimea - Installation by Yaroslav Koporulin
OurCrimea - 196K - MFA First Year Thesis Show,
Exhibition View, Katzen Art Center, American University, April 2016
Installation: Approx. 11 sq. ft. Video, Sound, Beach chairs, Beach towels, Sand,
Reproductions of Crimean landscapes painted by Ivan Aivazovsky.
Installation “Our Crimea” is a reflection on the 2014-16 Russian-Ukrainian crisis and annexation of Crimean peninsula, a popular resort on the Black Sea. War in Ukraine undermined hundreds of years of coexistence and collaboration between two closely related nations, created deep political and economic crisis, generated hate and misunderstanding amongst people in this region.
This piece is constructed as a cross-intersection of two themes: “The Resort” and “The War.”
The Resort theme is portrayed as a beach setting. Two beach chairs placed on the pile of sand are facing the assembly of peaceful Crimean landscapes on the gallery wall. Landscapes are reproductions of commissioned work painted by Ivan Aivazovsky at the end of 19th century depicting city of Yalta and its surroundings. The choice of the city wasn’t a random decision: at the end of the World War II, in February of 1945 leaders of 3 leading countries involved in the war: US, UK and Russia have discussed the future of Nazi’s Germany during the conference held in Yalta.
Two facing each other semi-walls with monitors are framing the War scene. Each monitor features a looping video portrait of a person reciting from A. Pushkin’s poem “Ukrainian Night” in Ukrainian and Russian languages. The reading tone escalades into a verbal war zone as two people throw poem’s words at each other but then it vanishes into a beachy sound of sea waves and seagulls flying by.
Sabatynivka Archaeological Treasure | Virtual Museum Tour
The Mykolayiv Regional Museum of Local Lore. It took a hundred years between its establishment and opening it as a museum. The first findings included in the exhibits were made by sailors back in 1792. The first and genuine Mykolayiv Museum of Local Lore was opened by a lawyer and amateur archaeologist in 1913. It changed its addresses several times and today it is one of the first museums of ancient history in Ukraine. Its objects are the result of exhausting and tremendous archaeological work and a true stroke of luck and success. Yet, sometimes the smile of “lady luck” is more reminiscent of a grin. It is a case of discovery in the village Kuriachi Lozy in the Mykolayiv oblast.

The Livadia / Лівадія / Ливадия & Alupka / Алупка palaces (Ukraine)
Livadiya (Ukrainian: Лівадія, Russian: Ливадия, Crimean Tatar: Livadiya) is small town in Crimea, Ukraine 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) west of Yalta. A minor Crimean Tatar settlement in Middle Ages, Livadiya was named after the ancient Greek entrance into paradise in 1835, when a notable landscape park was laid out here. Livadiya became a summer residence of the Russian tsars in 1861. Emperor Alexander III of Russia died there in 1894. The Livadia Palace, built in 1910-11, is now a museum. It was formerly a summer palace of the last Russian Imperial family. In 1945, it served as the meeting place of the Yalta Conference and residence of Franklin Delano Roosevelt during the Conference. Nowadays, Livadiya is known primarily for producing wine and is also a noted health resort.
Alupka (Ukrainian: Алупка, Russian: Алупка, Crimean Tatar: Alupka) is a resort city located in Crimea, Ukraine, situated 17 km (11 mi) to the west of Yalta. It is famous for the Vorontsov's Palace, designed by English architect Edward Blore in an extravagant mixture of Scottish baronial and Neo-Moorish styles and built in 18281846 for prince Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov.
Alupka and its surrounding area is full of resort hotels on the shore of the Black Sea, where thousands of travelers (particularly from the former Soviet Union) travel every year. Public transport to Alupka can include the bus system (bus routes #26 and #27 from Yalta) and other road vehicles.
