Gouda, Netherlands City Tour
We're visiting the Dutch city of Gouda in this practical guide to seeing the highlights of Gouda, in Holland, in the Netherlands. Most famous for Gouda cheese, but there are many other attractions to enjoy in this beautiful Dutch city. It has some fine examples of that special Dutch feature of the reflecting canals lined by flowers and pedestrian lanes. But here we've got several of these charming neighborhoods we'll show you in the video, and the important building where the cheese was weighed on the main town square.
The Weighing House, or Waag, has for centuries been a central point in town where the all-important cheese was weighed and deals were made.
It now contains the Tourist Information Center and the Cheese and Crafts Museum where you can taste and purchase a variety of cheeses.
The Markt, or marketplace, is the central plaza in the heart of town, home to countless pubs, restaurants and cozy sidewalk cafes.
The exquisitely proportioned Stadhuys, or City Hall, is a gem of late Gothic and early Renaissance architecture, dating from 1449-59.
The traditional cheese market takes place in the plaza every Thursday mornings 10 AM till 1230 from April through the end of August.
The street alongside the marketplace is one of the busiest in town with lots of shops, and especially the restaurants and bars and cafés – usually buzzing with people.
One block away, Groote Kerk, or Great Church, also called Saint John Church, was founded in 1485 and rebuilt after a fire in 1562. The round-arched arcades are borne by 36 pillars supporting the lofty barrel-vaulted ceiling of dark wood. It is the longest church in the Netherlands, at 123 meters.
Our walking route, starting at the train station and down to that central market square, into the church, then we'll continue along a beautiful canal down to the harbor, and then circling back around in a complete round trip walking tour of the city, and ending up back at the train station. Now we continue along the Westhaven canal.
You can easily walk along this splendid canal from the town center, only 600 meters distance - it'll take you about five minutes - down to the historic harbor where you will find clippers, barges and sailing vessels lying majestically alongside each other in the Museum Harbor, and most of these are still lived in.
In the Middle Ages, due to its central location, the town offered passage to ships en-route to Amsterdam and Flanders. After the 15th century, Gouda's role in international shipping went into decline.
Walking back towards the center from the harbor, you'll see another historic site – it's a windmill, very characteristic of the Netherlands.
We're taking a circular route through town, walking along yet another beautiful canal, observing all these bicycles going back and forth. You can actually rent a bicycle here if you'd like to peddle around in town or even extend out to some of the surrounding areas.
This route to the harbor, and then returning along a few of the less traveled back lanes, gets you off the beaten track. It's an easy stroll that doesn't take much time, and this route can bring you past another few blocks of shopping. Here you can see a benefit of being here when the cheese market is not on – you will not see very many other tourists. Then passing along a few residential blocks with their old-fashioned buildings. It's nice to get away from the historic highlights for a while and into a neighborhood that's more for locals. It's quiet and peaceful over here.
Then you will come around the bend and find what is perhaps the prettiest of the canal scenes in town along what's called the Turfmarkt.
Turf was that peat, or combustible decaying soil that was very important to the old Dutch for cooking and heating their homes, much like in Ireland and elsewhere in the north of Europe.
This route takes us back to the center at the marketplace.
There's a lovely block behind the market square. We can have a peek at it showing that very special Dutch combination of shop fronts along a pedestrian lane next to a charming little canal – circles on the map and next to it is the new market, a modern little shopping mall.
Gouda is generally visited as a daytrip from other nearby cities, which are only 20 to 30 minutes away by train. Even all the way to Amsterdam is just 52 minutes. So you can easily visit Gouda for most of the day without spending the night there. Or if you wish to overnight, there are some fine hotels such as a four-star Best Western.
The superb Dutch rail system makes it very easy to travel around in this relatively small nation, as you will see in our many other movies about the Netherlands, where we take you to all of the highlights of this wonderful country. Look for them in our collection.

Gouda is a city in South Holland founded as a settlement during the Middle Ages. With a continuous history that traces its city charter to 1272, today Gouda is a thriving city seeped in history. Often thought of as the home to cheese, Gouda is also famous for its historic churches, buildings, stroopwafels, smoking pipes, pottery as well as its candles. Gouda cheese is produced in the surrounding countryside, its name comes from the Gouda Cheese Market which is active to this day.
When visiting the City of Gouda between April and August you should plan to be there for a Thursday morning. It is on Thursday mornings that a tradition that dates to 1395 takes place in the city hall plaza, The Gouda Cheese Market.
Cheese is one of Holland’s biggest exports, the city of Gouda is synonymous with cheese. The Gouda Cheese Market is a living testament to an effective free market. Gouda cheese is not produced in the city. It is produced by farmers large and small from throughout the surrounding valley, known as the cheese valley. The name Gouda Cheese comes from the name of the marketplace, not the product’s origin.
The Gouda Cheese Market is a step back in time. Farmers from around the region deliver their cheese by horse and wagon to the marketplace. Wheels of farm fresh cheese are traded in an open-air setting. Each transaction is completed by the clap of hands. This spectacle of cheese transactions happening in individual sales is an historical tradition that is almost theatrical in nature.
If you are an avid fan of museums, the Gouda Cheese Market is a living museum, maintaining the centuries old tradition of cheese trading in the heart of the historical city of Gouda.

Gouda population 70,828 in 2009) is a city and municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland.
Gouda, which was granted city rights in 1272, is famous for its Gouda cheese, smoking pipes, and 15th-century city hall.
In the Middle Ages, a settlement was founded at the location of the current city by the Van der Goude family, who built a fortified castle alongside the banks of the Gouwe River, from which the family and the city took its name. The area, originally marshland, developed over the course of two centuries. By 1225, a canal was linked to the Gouwe and its estuary was transformed into a harbour. Gouda's array of historic churches and other buildings makes it a very popular day trip destination.
Gouda is world famous for its Gouda cheese, which is still traded on its cheese market, held each Thursday. Gouda is also known for the fabrication of candles, smoking pipes, and stroopwafels. Gouda used to have a considerable linen industry and a number of beer breweries.
The world famous Gouda cheese is not made in the city itself but in the surrounding region. It derives its name from being traded in Gouda where the city council imposes stringent quality controls.
The economy of the city centre is based on tourism, leisure and retail, while offices are located at the outskirts of the city. Currently, there are over 32,000 jobs in the city, mainly in commercial and healthcare services.

Cheese Museum in Gouda - Tasting Dutch Cheese | Holland Travel Vlog
What is the secret of Dutch cheese? The Dutch produce 650 million kilos of cheese every year. Two third is exported, which makes Holland the largest cheese exporter in the world. On average the Dutch eat 14,3 kilos of cheese per person per year.
In this video we will tell you the secret behind the delicious Dutch cheese or in particular GOUDA CHEESE!!
I got the chance to visit Gouda for the first time. I always wanted to go there to visit the famous cheese market. The amazing spectacle where the traders and farmers negotiate the price of the cheese is held every Thursday. After you have seen the show on the market and the Dutch women/men, dressed in typical Dutch cloths, singing Dutch songs also pay a visit to Goudse Waag.
This authentic building, designed in 1668 by architect Pieter Post, is also the location of the Gouda Tourist Information Office (VVV).
The ground floor of the Goudse Waag was formerly used to weigh cheese. Today, the Goudse Waag houses the Cheese and Crafts Museum. Here, one can learn about the building’s history, the products weighed and traded, and how cheese is made. The ground floor is also the location of the Gouda Tourist Information Office.

Around the year 1100, the area where Gouda now is located was swampy and covered with a peat forest, crossed by small creeks such as the Gouwe. Along the shores of this stream near the current market and city hall, peat harvesting began in the 11th and 12th centuries. In 1139, the name Gouda is first mentioned in a statement from the Bishop of Utrecht.
In the 13th century, the Gouwe was connected to the Oude Rijn (Old Rhine) by means of a canal and its mouth at the Hollandse IJssel was developed into a harbour. Castle Gouda was built to protect this harbour. This shipping route was used for trade between Flanders and France with Holland and the Baltic Sea. In 1272, Floris V, Count of Holland, granted city rights to Gouda, which by then had become an important location. City-canals or grachten were dug and served as transport ways through the town.
Great fires in 1361 and 1438 destroyed the city. In 1572, the city was occupied by Les Gueux (Dutch rebels against the Spanish King) who also committed arson and destruction. In 1577 the demolition of Castle Gouda began.
In 1551 was founded the oldest still-functioning inn De Zalm, located on Markt 34, near the historic Waag building.
In 1574, 1625, 1636, and 1673, Gouda suffered from deadly plague epidemics, of which the last one was the most severe: 2995 persons died, constituting 20% of its population.[4]
In the last quarter of the 16th century, Gouda had serious economic problems. It recovered in the first half of the 17th century and even prospered between 1665 and 1672. But its economy collapsed again when war broke out in 1672 and the plague decimated the city in 1673, even affecting the pipe industry. After 1700, Gouda enjoyed a period of progress and prosperity until 1730. Then another recession followed, resulting in a long period of decline that lasted well into the 19th century.[5] Gouda was one of the poorest cities in the country during that period: the terms Goudaner and beggar were considered synonymous.[6]
Starting in 1830, demolition of the city walls began. The last city gate was torn down in 1854. Only from the second half of the 19th century onward did Gouda start to profit from an improved economic condition. New companies, such as Stearine Kaarsenfabriek (Stearine Candle Factory) and Machinale Garenspinnerij (Mechanized Yarn Spinnery), acted as the impetus to its economy. In 1855, the railway Gouda-Utrecht began to operate. In the beginning of the 20th century, large-scale development began, extending the city beyond its moats. First the new neighbourhoods Korte Akkeren, Kort Haarlem and Kadebuurt were built, followed by Oosterwei [nl], Bloemendaal [nl], Goverwelle [nl] and Westergouwe [nl] after World War II.
From 1940 on, back-filling of the city moats and city-canals, the grachten, began: the Nieuwe Haven, Raam, Naaierstraat, and Achter de Vismarkt. But because of protests from city dwellers and revised policies of city planners, Gouda did not continue back-filling moats and city-canals, now considered historically valuable. In 1944, the railway station was damaged during an Allied bombardment, killing 8 and wounding 10 persons. This bombardment was intended to destroy the railroad connecting The Hague and Rotterdam to Utrecht.
After the war, the city started to expand and nearly tripled in size. New neighbourhoods, such as Gouda-Oost, Bloemendaal and Goverwelle were built. Over the last years there has been a shift from expanding the city towards urban renewal and gentrification.

Gouda cheese is produced in the surrounding countryside, its name comes from the Gouda Cheese Market which is active to this day.
Museum Gouda housed in the historic building Catharina Gasthuis with a chapel that dates to the original settlement during the Middle Ages. Dedicated to all things Gouda this iconic museum houses a collection of over 40,000 art objects related to the centuries of history of the City of Gouda. As such it provides visitors a unique perspective of a slice of the history of the Netherlands.
Museum Gouda is closed on Mondays. It is open to visitors the other six days of the week from 11 AM – 5 PM. Special features of the Museum Gouda include a treasure of altar paintings from the 16th century. Most intricate altar paintings were destroyed during the iconoclasm, Gouda is the one place where a broad collection was preserved and are now displayed at the Museum Gouda. This alone makes Museum Gouda worth a visit, yet it offers so much more.
The experience of entering Museum Gouda is a magical transformation from the modern world back to the middle ages. This experience is reinforced by a City Scale Model of Gouda in 1562. This extremely important portrait of life in 1562 precious to the history of Gouda is equally representative of life around Netherlands and all of Europe during this time.
Owing to a progressive climate of tolerance Gouda did not experience an iconoclasm when the city turned to Protestantism. Museum Gouda exhibits a monumental altar painting dating to the 16th century from neighboring St. John’s Church, art work that can not be seen anywhere else in the Netherlands.
Although a home to religion, art as well as merchants in all trades, Gouda had its own militia that defended the city, kept the peace and sometimes went to war. Museum Gouda offers a look at the weapons of war in a collection of militia pieces. One of the most interesting pieces exhibited in relation to the Gouda Militia is a painting of the Gouda war council by Ferdinand Bol, Rembrandt’s master student.
In the 1900s Gouda became known as a center for decorative pottery. Museum Gouda pays homage to this important time in history with a vast collection of Gouda Pottery. Representing all the schools of pottery as well as the numerous factories that sprung up around pottery, Museum Gouda displays a definitive representation of local pottery.
No art museum in the Netherlands would be complete without paintings from one of the most important times in art. Museum Gouda as a large collection of 19th and early 20th century Dutch and French Paintings. This collection includes the work of the forerunners of the Impressionist movement.
Museum Gouda exhibits its vast collection of over 40,000 pieces of art in permanent galleries along with special themed exhibitions throughout the year. When planning to visit this museum housed in an historical building from the middle ages be sure to check their web site for special exhibitions that are on the schedule.
Museum Gouda welcomes and encourages visits by children. It also offers a garden café for light authentic fare served in a museum atmosphere or in a garden terrace to your liking. Museum Gouda offers guided tours as well as a Museum shop.
Museum Gouda is located Behind the Church 14 2801 JX Gouda.
When visiting the City of Gouda between April and August you should plan to be there for a Thursday morning. It is on Thursday mornings that a tradition that dates to 1395 takes place in the city hall plaza, The Gouda Cheese Market.

Visit Gouda
Gouda gained city rights in 1272 and the city derives its name from the old Dutch name of the Gouwe River which flows through Gouda.
Visit every Thursday morning the traditional cheese market and watch the farmers and traders bargin for the cheese in the old traditional Dutch manner by clapping of hands. Next, to the cheese market, you will find the fresh food market.
The St Janskerk (church) named after John the Baptist behind the main market square dates back to 1552 and is the longest church in the Netherlands with its 123 meters length containing a total of 72 stain glass windows dating back to the Middle ages displaying scenes from the Bible.
Not to be missed is a visit to the Cheese museum located in the Waag built in 1668 which formerly used to weigh the cheese.
