Duisburg is a city in western Germany, at the junction of the Rhine and Ruhr rivers. It's known for its large harbor and the Innenhafen (Inner Harbour), a waterfront dining and nightlife district. The Museum Küppersmühle has a collection of modern German art, and the Lehmbruck Museum displays modern sculpture. The site of an old ironworks, Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord is now a park with trails and a ropes course.
Duisburg, about 25km west of Essen, is home to Europe’s largest inland port, the immensity of which is best appreciated on a boat tour. Embarkation is at the Schwanentor, which is also the gateway to the Innenhafen Duisburg (inner harbour), an urban quarter with a mix of modern and restored buildings infused with museums, restaurants, bars, clubs and attractions set up in the old storage silos.

With the world's biggest inland harbour and its proximity to Düsseldorf International Airport, Duisburg has become an important venue for commerce and steel production. Contemporary Duisburg is a result of numerous incorporations of surrounding towns and smaller cities. It is the twelfth-largest city in Germany and the fifth-largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The core city was founded in the 5th century AD as a marketplace on the Westphalian Hellweg trade route, a ford on the river Rhine and the border between the Frankish Empire and the Duchy of Saxons. Around 740 it became one of several royal courts of Francia, it was first mentioned in a chronicle dated 883 AD as one of the Rhenish places conquered by Normans. 16th-century cartographer Gerardus Mercator, creator of seminal globes and atlases as well as the Mercator projection still used in modern world maps, lived, worked and taught in Duisburg for forty years.
Since the late 19th century, the city is renowned for its steel industry, being Central Europe's leading site in this sector. All seven blast furnaces in the Ruhr are now located in Duisburg, producing half of the pig iron and a third of the crude steel made in Germany. Coal-mining, on the other hand, has never played the big role it had in other places on the Ruhr. As Germany's heavy industries have lost importance since the mid-20th century (due to the rise of plastics and relocation of production to low-wage countries), Duisburg had to go through a major structural transformation, losing tens of thousands of jobs in the steel mills while creating new ones in the services and logistics sectors.
Duisburg-Ruhrort, on the confluence of rivers Ruhr and Rhine, has long been and still is Europe's biggest inland harbour. It has successfully kept up with the times, replacing its facilities for break bulk and dry bulk cargo in favour of container shipping and modern logistics infrastructure as well as minimising the average laytime of ships from more than a day to only a few hours. Duisburg also aims to be the terminal of a New Silk Road, offering direct freight train links from China. The University of Duisburg-Essen, with 42,000 students, ranks among the 10 largest German universities.

Duisburg - Germany is a German city in the western part of the Ruhr Area (Ruhrgebiet) in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is an independent metropolitan borough within Regierungsbezirk Düsseldorf. With the world's biggest inland harbor and its proximity to Düsseldorf International Airport, Duisburg has become an important venue for commerce and steel production.
Today's city is a result of numerous incorporations of surrounding towns and smaller cities. It is the twelfth-largest city in Germany and the fifth-largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia with 486,800 residents as of December 2012. The city is renowned for its steel industry. There is still one coal mine in operation, but Duisburg has never been a coal-mining center to the same extent as other places in the Ruhr. All blast furnaces in the Ruhr are now located in Duisburg. 49% of all hot metal and 34.4% of all pig-iron in Germany is produced here (as of 2000). The University of Duisburg-Essen, with 33,000 students, ranks among the 10 largest German universities.

Museum Küppersmühle in Duisburg
Das Museum Küppersmühle für Moderne Kunst ist ein Kunstmuseum in Duisburg. Betreiber ist die Stiftung für Kunst und Kultur e. V. in Bonn. Museum Küppersmühle (MKM) is a Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art based Duisburg's Inner Harbour. It houses the Ströher Collection. It is part of the Duisburg: Town and Harbour section of the Ruhr Industrial Heritage Trail.
Architecture
Based in a former warehouse, the MKM was opened in April 1999. The building was redesigned by the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, using a masterplan devised by Norman Foster. After gutting the original industrial building an exhibition space of 3,600 m² was created across three storeys. With 6-meter high ceilings, grey Turkish basalt natural daylight is provided by the ceiling-high window slits. The building is served by an external staircase attached to the original building.

Kunst die im Wege steht, so lautet der Titel einer Ausstellung des Malers Markus Lüpertz, die vom 18. März 2016 bis zum 29. Mai 2016 im MKM Museum Küppersmühle für Moderne Kunst im Innenhafen Duisburg zu sehen ist.
Mehr als 80 Arbeiten werden in der Einzelausstellung zu sehen sein, die alle wichtigen Schaffensphasen des Künstlers abdecken. Die Gemälde, Skulpturen, Reliefs und Druckstöcke stammen aus der Sammlung Ströher und lassen die Entwicklung von Markus Lüpertz Werk über einen Zeitraum von 50 Jahren nachvollziehen.
Die Ausstellung ist Teil der Reihe AKADEMOS, in der Werke von Professoren der Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie, deren Leiter Lüpertz 26 Jahre lang war, gezeigt werden.
Das MKM bedankt sich bei der Sparkasse Duisburg für die Unterstützung der Ausstellung.

The exhibition Kavalierstart 1978 – 1982 at Museum Morsbroich / Leverkusen presents from April 20 until July 20, 2008 the artistic positions of the early 1980s – a time when artists developed a new form of “thought in pictures”. Exhibition visitors will have the opportunity to view many early works by artists who have become quite famous since. The curator, Stefanie Kreuzer, has chosen the artists based on their high degree of sensitivity and their perceptive detection of societal and cultural changes. The artists featured in this exhibition applied strategies that were quite different from the modern rationalistic and functionalistic tendencies in that they focused more strongly on fiction and narration, irony, appropriation and simulation. Mit Unterstützung der Sparkasse Duisburg und von Evonik Industries fand vom 04.07. - 05.10.2014 im Museum Küppersmühle im Innenhafen Duisburg eine grosse Retrospektive des Künstlers Willi Baumeister unter dem Titel INTERNATIONAL statt. Willi Baumeister (1889 – 1955) gehört ohne Frage zu den wichtigsten deutschen Künstlern der Nachkriegszeit und zu den bedeutendsten Vertretern der abstrakten Malerei. Die Retrospektive „Willi Baumeister International“ im MKM Museum Küppersmühle gibt mit rund 100 Werken nicht nur einen Einblick in das umfangreiche OEuvre des Malers, sondern zeichnet auch sein internationales Netzwerk aus Galeristen, Sammlern, Künstlern und Kunsthistorikern anhand von zahlreichen Fotografien aus dem Archiv Baumeister nach. Kaum ein Künstler wird so sehr mit der deutschen Nachkriegszeit in Verbindung gebracht wie Willi
Baumeister. Seine Rolle als Verfechter der abstrakten Malerei in den 1950er Jahren und seine Arbeit als Kunsttheoretiker haben dieses Bild über Jahrzehnte gefestigt. Baumeisters Reduzierung auf seine Bedeutung als einflussreicher deutscher Nachkriegskünstler greift allerdings zu kurz. Mit der Ausstellung
„Willi Baumeister International“ stellt das MKM Baumeister als international agierenden Künstler vor.
Den Auftakt der Ausstellung im Museum Küppersmühle bildet eine umfangreiche Präsentation privater Fotografien aus dem Archiv Baumeister im Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, die einen intensiven Blick auf die Person Willi Baumeister und seine zahlreichen internationalen Kontakte zu Galeristen, Kunsthistorikern
und Künstlern erlauben. Daran anschließend wird die Entwicklung seines Werkes in chronologisch umgekehrter Reihenfolge ausgehend vom Spätwerk bis zu seinen Anfängen als Stuttgarter Kunststudent vorgestellt. Den Schwerpunkt bilden dabei ausgewählte zentrale Werkgruppen Baumeisters, beginnend
mit den späten Montaru-Bildern und der Afrika-Serie bis hin zu den Mauerbildern der 1920er Jahre, mit denen Baumeister der internationale Durchbruch gelang. Sie geben einen Überblick über seine Werkentwicklung und sind zugleich Belege seines internationalen Renommees.

The Innenhafen in Duisburg, Germany, is connected to the Rhine River, encompasses an area of 89ha. For over a hundred years during the high point of the Industrial Revolution, it was the central harbour and trading point of the town. Since the mid 1960s, the importance of the harbour declined and it lay in a disused condition for 20 years, before plans for renovation were drawn up. This former industrial area has been fundamentally transformed, a process which started as a part of the International Building Exhibition Emscher Park (IBA) which ran from 1989 until 1999.
The basis for this model of development in the Ruhr district was delivered in 1994 by the British architect Norman Foster. Since then, the Inner Harbor has transformed itself into a district combining employment, housing, culture and water-based leisure activities. Today, the Inner Harbour is both an industrial monument and a main stop on the Route der Industriekultur. It is also the world's largest inland port.
Where the Inner Harbour is today, the Rhine flowed many centuries ago. Up until the 5th century, the boundary of the Roman Empire ran through this locality. During the Middle Ages a Frankish regal court was built on the banks of the Rhine, today that place is occupied by the Rathaus. On the same area were to be found the old Duisburg town church, the Salvatorkirche, the market hall and the city walls.
According to recent research, around the year 1000 the Rhine shifted its course westwards. Duisburg found itself no longer lying directly on the Rhine; it remained connected to the river only through a dead arm of the Rhine for the following 400 years. As a result, this previously important trading town declined into a small agricultural settlement. It was only in the 19th century that an initiative to resurrect the connection to the Rhine proved successful. Initially, the Outer Harbour was dug from the Rhine in the west as far as the contemporary Marientor Bridge, to which an eastern extension was later built, the Inner Harbour. Early on, the timber industry established itself on the harbour, mining interest being a major customer for their products then, as modern production methods were able to reduce their space requirements, grain mills began to establish themselves in several locations, along with their warehouses for storage. They conferred on the Inner Harbour the nickname bread basket of the Ruhr district, supplying the rapidly growing population in the district.
After the decline of the grain mills in the 1960s, the Inner Harbour lost its economic significance and was characterized primarily by warehousing. Nevertheless, the district still continued to block off access to the water from the city itself. The first steps in giving the inner harbour a new face were taken at the end of the 80s with the opening up of city walls and the construction of a new living quarter on Corputiusplatz.
Within the framework of the IBA Emscher Park, which renovated the industrial areas of the Ruhr in an exemplary fashion, a transformation design for the entire Inner Harbour was launched. The water was to be re-incorporated into the city, it was to be made freely accessible and produce an enhanced quality of living – and attract investors. Space for employment – especially in the service sector – for living, culture and leisure were to be integrated into the overall plan. In this sense, the industrial and historic symbols of the harbour were to be quite consciously retained.
Highlights of the newly renovated quarter of the Inner Harbour are the Küppersmühle converted to an arts museum by Herzog & de Meuron, the Werhahnmühle, which following the departure of the Children's Museum ATLANTIS is being used as a “Legoland Discovery Centre“,[3] the Cultural- and City History Museum, the “Garden of Remembrance“ laid out by Dani Karavan as well as the Synagoge of the Jewish District of Duisburg-Mülheim/Ruhr-Oberhausen, designed by the architect Zvi Hecker.
Additionally, on the far side of the Garden a marina has been built complete with a Buckelbrücke ('Buckle bridge' – for pedestrians). It is intended to extend the marina into the adjacent Holzhafen. A lively dining-scene has also developed. In addition to more than 15 restaurants und clubs, there are also owner-run bars and franchises.

Kunst-U-Boot vor dem Museum Kueppersmuehle im Innenhafen Duisburg
Das Museum Küppersmühle, MKM und der Duisburger Innenhafen haben seit dem heutigen Donnerstag, 10.10.2013 eine neue Attraktion, denn am dort ging das Kunst-U-Boot von Andreas M. Kaufmann und Hans Ulrich Reck mit dem Titel ICH KANN, WEIL ICH WILL, WAS iCH MUSS an einem Ponton an der Rückfront des Museums dauerhaft vor Anker. Bei dem Kunst-U-Boot handelt es sich um einen Neuerwerb des Sammler Ehepaares Ströher für die Sammlung des Hauses. Erstmals präsentierte sich das Kunstwerk im Jahre 2010 im Rahmen der Kulturhauptstadt Ruhr 2010 auf dem Baldeneysee in Essen, wo es seinerzeit von den Ströhers auch entdeckt und schliesslich erworben wurde. Für den Transport musste das U-Boot in 3 Körperteile und 2 Flügel zerlegt werden und wurde dann am heutigen Tage in Rekordzeit von dem Architekten Reza Khazifi und seinem Team zusammengebaut. Das Kunst-U-Boot ist 16,6 m lang, 7,3 m breit und hat einen 6,3m hohen Turm. Gefertigt aus 6mm dickem Stahl entstand es auf der Meidericher Schiffswerft in Duisburg. Die Intention der Künstler war es, „eine politisch-ikonografisch reflektierte Vision einer spezifischen 'Kathedrale menschheitsgeschichtlich bedeutsamer Bild-Imagination' zu realisieren (...). Der Akzent liegt dabei auf einer Beschreibung der Leistungsfähigkeit und Grenzen des bildlichen Mediums. (Andreas M. Kaufmann/Hans Ulrich Reck). Die aus der Außenhaut des Turmes herausgeschnittenen Buchstaben „ICH KANN, WEIL ICH WILL, WAS ICH MUSS fungieren dabei wie Monitore, die -- analog zu den von Krieg, Politik und Medien motivierten Faktoren bei der Bildselektion -- ausgewählte Bildereignisse in den Vordergrund rücken, während die Mehrheit der Bilder im Halbdunkel verbleibt. Gleichzeitig bietet das kathedralengleiche Innere des begehbaren Kunstwerkes dem gesamten Bildwissen einen Schutzraum, der durch die Möglichkeit des Abtauchens die Inhalte vor Vereinnahmung oder gar Zerstörung bewahren kann.

Das Museum der Deutschen Binnenschifffahrt ist in der alten Ruhrorter Badeanstalt untergebracht. Es erwarten den Besucher zahlreiche Informationen zur Lebenswelt der Binnenschifffahrt. Besuchen Sie auch die begehbaren Museumsschiffe, den Radschleppdampfer Oscar Huber von 1922 und den Eimerkettendampfbagger Minden von 1882. Beide liegen an der Steiger Schifferbörse, nur 10 Minuten Fußweg vom Museum entfernt.....

Wiedereröffnung LehmbruckMuseum Duisburg
Ein Gespräch mit Dr. Gottlieb Leins, dem stellvertretenden Direktor des Duisburger LehmbruckMuseums. Am kommenden Samstag, 10.07.2010 wird es ab 14:00 Uhr eine Wiedereröffnung des LehmbruckMuseums mit einem Museumsfest im und rund um das Museum geben. EIgentlich jedoch war das Museum gar nicht geschlossen, denn die Umbau, nein besser Rückbauarbeiten zur Rückversetzung in den alten, ursprünglichen und denkmalgeschützten Zustand fanden bei weitgehendst geöffnetem Hause statt. Nun wird es ab Samstag vieles Altes neu zu sehen, aber auch einiges Neues zu sehen geben. Durch die Entfernung von Verschalungen, durch eine neue Farbigkeit, durch eine leere Eingangshalle, in der die Konzentration des Betrachters der Architektur gelten soll, hat das Museum, haben die Ausstellungen eine völlig neue Perspektive bekommen. Hinzu kommt die neue Art der Zusammenstellung und der Gegenüberstellung von Kunstwerken. Wir haben drei Tage vor dem Museumsfest unter dem Motto: Wir lieben unsere Sammlung...und laden Gäste ein! ein Gespräch mit dem stellvertretenden Museumsdirektor Dr. Gottlieb Leins geführt, der nähere Erläuterungen zu dem Geschehen im und am Museum gibt und der einlädt, am Samstag zum Museumsfest zu kommen.
