James Rosenquist: Painting as Immersion / Museum Ludwig Cologne
The American artist James Rosenquist (1933-2017) is one of the most important protagonists in the pop art movement. With the exhibition “James Rosenquist: Painting as Immersion” the Museum Ludwig in Cologne (Germany) currently presents the works of James Rosenquist in the context of their cultural, social, and political dimensions. The exhibition follows the central aspect of “painting as immersion,” as the artist himself calls it, while offering a wide-ranging overview of James Rosenquist’s work. Curated by Stephan Diederich and Yilmaz Dziewior, the show features works from the museum's own collection as well as loans from James Rosenquist himself and from museums such as MoMA and the Guggenheim Museum in New York, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm. James Rosenquist: Painting as Immersion at Museum Ludwig in Cologne (Germany) runs until March 4, 2018.

Gerhard Richter / Cologne Cathedral and Museum Ludwig, Cologne
Gerhard Richter: “Zufall” (chance) / Cologne Cathedral’s south transept window and “4900 Farben” (4900 colors) at Museum Ludwig / Cologne. 72 shades of color, each appearing 72 time per level, “out of which the computer uses a random number generator to determine the color arrangement for one half of the cathedral window; the other half is a reflection of the first.” This was Richter’s sober recapitulation of the design for the south transept window of Cologne’s High Cathedral. Parallel to the consecration of the window, the Museum Ludwig is showing some older works of Gerhard Richter and a number of drafts for the window project. The centre of the show “4900 Colors” make up a recent panel painting with the same title. Also to see is the old painting 4096 Colors from 1974 which was the basis for Richter’s considerations about the cathedral window and which in reproduction served as the first test image laid behind the tracery outlines. See the catalogue: Gerhard Richter: Zufall which is published by Verlag Kölner Dom and Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, Cologne.

David Shrigley: Monotypes / Museum Ludwig, Cologne / Germany
David Shrigley is an artist who works with various media: animation, drawing, sculpture, photography. He is known for his cartoons released in softcover books and animations. At the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Germany, David Shrigley presents monotypes, prints made in a single copy. Unlike his black-and-white drawings with their comic strip aesthetic, the monotypes on display at the Museum Ludwig are very colorful, but they show the same bizarre and morbid humor. VernissageTV attended the press preview and the film screening / opening of the exhibition. This video mainly documents the press preview. To view his animations we recommend David Shrigley’s website and YouTube.

Andrea Fraser: Wolfgang Hahn-Prize 2013 / Museum Ludwig, Cologne
Coinciding with Art Cologne 2013, Museum Ludwig in Cologne (Germany) opened two exhibitions: A solo show of Phil Collins, and a retrospective of Andrea Fraser. The Los Angeles-based artist Andrea Fraser (b. 1965; Billings, Montana) received the Wolfgang Hahn Prize for 2013, awarded annually by the Museum Ludwig's Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst. The prize honors contemporary artists whose oeuvre is internationally recognized. Andrea Fraser is seen to have made a vital contribution to current issues in contemporary art. Fraser has produced a wide-ranging ouvre of performances, videos and texts.
After Fraser's last survey exhibition in Europe in 2003 at the Hamburger Kunstverein, this large presentation at the Museum Ludwig aims to investigate the artist's new critical direction. The show presents Fraser's early works, along with her new alignment in recent works. Over and beyond this, the exhibition focuses on Andrea Fraser as a performance artist. She will give the first European performance of her latest full-length piece, Men on the Line, which she premiered in 2012 in Los Angeles. Two slightly older performances have also been staged during the opening by Fraser herself, while May I Help You from 1991 will be performed for the visitors during the exhibition by specially instructed actors.
Andrea Fraser: Wolfgang Hahn Prize 2013 / Retrospective at Museum Ludwig, Cologne. Opening reception and award ceremony, April 20, 2013.

Haegue Yang: ETA / Retrospective at Museum Ludwig, Cologne
In 2018, the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst am Museum Ludwig in Cologne (Germany) recognizes Haegue Yang for her extraordinary body of work with the Wolfgang Hahn Prize. The Museum Ludwig showcases Haegue Yang's oeuvre in the artist’s first-ever survey exhibition with over 120 works ranging from action-based objects from the 1990s to lacquer paintings, photographs, works on paper, video essays, anthropomorphic sculptures, performative pieces, and large-scale installations.
The abbreviation ETA stands for “estimated time of arrival,” among other things. Thus, the exhibition title points to an artistic career in transit and the constant itineracy of an artist who maintains studios in Seoul and Berlin and has exhibited internationally since 1994.
With her diverse oeuvre, Haegue Yang adeptly avoids clear attributions. Her works demonstrate elements of Institutional Critique and are conceptual as well as rich in cultural and historical references, while simultaneously sensually complex and emotionally charged. Across over 1500 square meters of exhibition space, this comprehensive retrospective’s spatial scenography will echo the conceptual dynamics of the works, lending the exhibition the quality of a Gesamtkunstwerk—harmonious yet full of dissonances.
Haegue Yang: ETA, 1994–2018, Wolfgang Hahn Prize 2018. Award ceremony and opening, April 17, 2018.

Pierre Huyghe Retrospective at Museum Ludwig, Cologne
The exhibition Pierre Huyghe at Museum Ludwig in Cologne is the first major survey of the French artist's work to date in Germany. The retrospective brings together more than 60 works and projects, including live situations, objects, photographs, films, drawings, and music. For more than twenty years, Pierre Huyghe has constructed site specific, time based situations, exploring the exhibition process. In recent years, Huyghe has created self-generating systems, including living entities and artifacts. In 2012, Pierre Huyghe participated in Documenta 13 in Kassel with a painted dog and a beehive-headed sculpture that he now shows again in Cologne.
The exhibition has been organized by the Centre Pompidou, Musée National d'art moderne, Paris, in association with the Museum Ludwig, Köln, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Unknown performer - Live at the Museum Ludwig, Cologne, Germany
Live at the Museum is a series of films in which buskers and other artists perform without permission in front of major museums around the world. The democracy of art and the use of public space are key components of this work. It is an indefinitely ongoing series and while each work stands on its own, they are interconnected through a shared distance to global cultural agendas and a quiet beauty emanating from the covert act of street performance. Live at the Museum is an investigation into the collective and institutional affirmation given to culture, while also functioning as a digital archive to cache the contribution of its participants.

Info text (excerpt):
In 2019, the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst am Museum Ludwig will recognize Jac Leirner with the Wolfgang Hahn Prize. The Brazilian artist, born in São Paulo in 1961, has been pursuing a subtle analysis of social and representational systems for many years. Found, often industrially manufactured everyday objects from which she creates installations, collages, and sculptures according to the principles of collecting, accumulating, and classifying play an important role in her work. This results in dense, often minimalist works that play with the aesthetic, representational, and socio-cultural levels of meaning of the objects.
About Jac Leirner
Jac Leirner was born in 1961 in São Paulo, where she continues to live and work today. In 1982 her first exhibition took place there. This was followed in 1991 by institutional solo exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Since then, Leirner has continually exhibited at a variety of renowned institutions around the world. For instance, she had a major retrospective at the State Art Gallery of São Paulo (2011) and also exhibited at the Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City (2014), the Museum of Contemporary Arts of Shanghai (2016), and the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin (2017). Leirner has participated in numerous biennials, including the São Paulo Biennial in 1989 and 1994, the Venice Biennale in 1990 and 1997, the Havana Biennial in 2000, and the Bienal do Mercosul in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 2005 and 2015. In Germany Leirner’s works were shown at Documenta IX in 1992 and in the same year at the Josef-Haubrich-Kunsthalle in Cologne.

Georg Herold: wo man kind / Museum Ludwig / Cologne
In the exhibition “wo man kind” at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Germany, Georg Herold (*1947) confronts earlier pieces (such as: “Bin mal eben Zigaretten holen” (1986) or “There is nothing left -There is no right” (1992)) from the Museum Ludwig collection with new figurative works, occupying the museum space as larger-than-life angular sculptures made of roof battens, canvas and coloured with car paint. Overhead on green painted walls there are hanging framed pencil drawings which are too distant to be seen with the naked eye. But Herold chose a particular way to present them. Interesting is the surprising title of the show: “wo man kind” an amphibology, both in English and German language. The show runs from 26 October 2007 until 24 March 2008 at Museum Ludwig. Curator: Paola Malavassi.

Jonathan Horowitz: Apocalypto Now / Museum Ludwig, Cologne
Good to know: The apocalypse will be delayed – at least the one caused by Global Warming. For the presentation of Jonathan Horowitz’ film Apocalypto Now at Museum Ludwig in Cologne is climate neutral: “Solar panels have been installed on the neighboring roof terrace, which looks out onto the Cathedral. The relationship between the sun and the panels is analogous to that of the projector and the screen, and the energy that the projector uses is regained by the solar installation.” (excerpt from the press release).
And if you think there’s not enough sun in rainy Germany, don’t worry! It really works: “The work of the American artist Jonathan Horowitz (*1966) employs the technique of montage much like a music DJ samples bits and pieces of songs. Scenes from classic movies are combined with obscure bits of media detritus to make critical connections between disparate narratives. The primary structure of Apocalypto Now is taken from a documentary on the history of the Hollywood disaster movie. Footage from documentaries on climate change and scenes from movies reenacting the 9/11 World Trade Center attack are intercut. Connections are drawn between disaster as entertainment, real life catastrophe, and the apocalyptic beliefs of religious fundamentalists. The central figure connecting these strands is the actor/director Mel Gibson. As with other players in Apocalypto Now, (self-)destructive impulses are channelled through religion and art. Gibson is not always successful, however, in containing these impulses.”
Jonathan Horowitz: Apocalypto Now at Museum Ludwig, Cologne / Germany. Opening reception, April 23, 2009.
