Hate #1. The Drunk/High Tourists in the Red Light District in Amsterdam: and how they have become a defacto image of The Netherlands, when The Netherlands has so much to offer travelers.
Hate #2. The Stairs: look the stairwells in the Netherlands are more like Ladders so be careful on them. Don't bring heavy bags.
Hate #3. The Service: as much as we love the Dutch people, the service is not something you will write home about. It's professional, but not overly friendly.
Hate #4. The Bike Lanes: Remember, Red is Dead... you will understand the first time you walk into a bike lane in The Netherlands.

Saab 37 Viggen at Aviodrome Museum Lelystad Netherlands

In December 1961, the Swedish government gave its approval for the development of Aircraft System 37, which would ultimately become the Viggen. By 1962, all elements for the project either existed or were close to fully developed; these included the aircraft itself, the powerplant, ejector seat, armaments, reconnaissance systems, ground servicing equipment, and training equipment such as simulators. In February 1962, approval of the overall configuration was given and was followed by a development contract in October 1962. According to aviation authors Bill Gunston and Peter Gilchrist, the project was by far the largest industrial development task ever attempted in Sweden. During the 1960s, the Viggen accounted for 10 per cent of all Swedish R&D funding.
In 1963, Saab finalized the aerodynamic design of the aircraft; the aerodynamic configuration was radical: it combined an aft-mounted double delta wing with a small, high-set canard foreplane, equipped with powered trailing flaps mounted ahead of and slightly above the main wing; this would be judged to be the best means to satisfy the conflicting demands for STOL performance, supersonic speed, low turbulence sensitivity at low level flight, and efficient lift for subsonic flight. Canard aircraft have since become common in fighter aircraft, notably with the Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale, Saab JAS 39 Gripen and the IAI Kfir, but principally for the purposes of providing agility during flight rather than for its STOL capabilities. Further aerodynamic refinements during the later stage of development included the addition of dog-tooth patterns upon the main wing to generate vortices, allowing for the elimination of blown flaps from the canard. The use of a thrust reverser enabled the sought short landing performance.
During development, Saab had opted to power the type using a single large turbofan engine. Originally, the British Rolls-Royce Medway engine had been selected to power the Viggen, which was then considered to be ideal for the basis for a supersonic engine equipped with a fully modulated afterburner; however, development of the Medway engine was cancelled due to the intended launch aircraft, the de Havilland Trident, being downsized during development. In place of the Medway, Saab chose to adopt a licence-production version of the American Pratt & Whitney JT8D engine, the Volvo RM8, instead. The RM8 was heavily redesigned, using new materials to accommodate flight at Mach-2 speeds, a Swedish-built afterburner, and a fully variable nozzle.
During 1964, construction of the first prototype aircraft commenced; on 8 February 1967, the first of an eventual seven prototypes conducted its maiden flight, which had occurred as per the established development schedule. This first flight, which lasted for 43 minutes, was flown by Erik Dahlström, Saab's chief test pilot, who reported the prototype to have been easy to handle throughout. Writing at the time, aerospace publication Flight International described the flight as having been Sweden's astonishing unilateral stand in the front rank of advanced aircraft-building nations...
Each of the seven prototypes were assigned different roles, although the initial aircraft were focused on supporting the development of the initial production variant, the AJ37. In 1967, the Swedish Government concluded that the in-development AJ 37 Viggen would be both cheaper and superior to the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. In April 1968, the Swedish government formally issued the authorization for manufacturing of the Viggen to proceed, issuing an order for 175 Viggens that year. Also in 1968, Saab began work on the Viggen's maritime reconnaissance and photo reconnaissance variants. In May 1969, the Viggen made its first public appearance outside of Sweden at the Paris Air Show. On 23 February 1971, the first production aircraft, an AJ37 model, conducted its first flight. In July 1971, the first production aircraft was delivered to the Swedish Air Force.
Tefaf: Global art market tight, bouyant as financial uncertainty persists

Art lovers from across the world are coming together in Maastricht, the Netherlands, these days for what is acknowledged globally as the world's leading art and antiques fair.
Tefaf Maastricht features an impressive selection of genuine masterpieces from 260 of the world's prestigious art and antiques dealers from 16 countries.
More than 30 thousand items are on display.
Among them this dark bronze buste of the French Baron de Bastard, created by realist Gustave Courbet in 1875. This work of art has been missing for years and was recently discovered again in Algeria.

The buste comes with its original wooden case which is covered with masonic symbols. It's on sale for 600,000 euro.
Other gems at this year's Tefaf are paintings by El Greco, Auguste Renoir and Frans Hals. This Rembrandt is the most expensive piece on exhibit. The asking price is 35 million euro.
New York-based art dealer Richard Feigen says the global art market remains buoyant as a result of continuing financial uncertainty.

Metrotype MG2 (type M) metro vehicle 5024 drove on February 9, 1968 the first metro ride from Rotterdam Central Station to Zuidplein.
Everyone can watch this metro vehicle for a fews days at metrostation Blaak.

Metrotype MG2 (type M) metrostel 5024 reed op 9 februari 1968 de eerste metrorit van Rotterdam Centraal naar Zuidplein.
Ter gelegenheid van het 50 jaar bestaan van de Rotterdamse metro (#50jaarMetro) is het eerste materieel, de oudste metro van Nederland weer terug op het metrospoor na meer dan 15 jaar niet gereden te hebben.
Van 9 tot en met 13 is het metrostel van buiten en binnen te bewonderen op metrostation Blaak, spoor 1 in Rotterdam (metrolijn A, B, C). De metro's naar Schiedam en De Akkers rijden via spoor 3.
In deze opname is de metro te zien over het spoor van metrolijn A en B. Hier heeft deze metro nooit gereden omdat dit een echte metro was, zonder pantograaf om stroom af te nemen van de bovenleiding.
De 5200-serie metro's type SG2 (type T) kwamen hier te rijden en op de 5300-serie na is al het materieel daarna ook voorzien van een pantograaf en geschikt voor de sneltramlijn en sinds de aanschaf rijden hier dus ook metro's van de 5400, 5600 en 5700-serie.
De 5500-serie wordt hier niet in dienst gepland omdat die voor RandstadRail metrolijn E bedoelt is. Inzet komt soms voor.
De 5000 en 5100-serie reden op de Noord-Zuidlijn, later Erasmuslijn en nu metrolijn D geheten tussen Rotterdam Centraal en De Akkers.
Deze metro's reden niet in dienst op de Oost-Westlijn, later Calandlijn, en nu metrolijn A, B en C geheten tussen De Terp en Marconiplein. De metro's reden niet meer in dienst toen de metrolijn van Marconiplein naar De Akkers in gebruik genomen werd en is daar nooit in of buiten dienst voorgekomen.

SPLASHTOURS BUS MAKES SPLASH! Amphibious bus Amphibus Amfibus Splashbus Riverbus Waterbus vehicle in the river Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
Amphi-bus drives on land and makes a splash in the water and goes in the direction of the Erasmusbrug.
The Amphibious bus / amphibus / riverbus / splashbus of the Splashtours Rotterdam drives of the way in Katendrecht, Rotterdam the Netherlands, and drives in the water and sail through the water vaart in the direction of the Erasmusbrug (Erasmus-Bridge) along the quay back past the SS Rotterdam and then drive back on land.
The tour starts and ends at the Euromast. It gives you a unique experience through Rotterdam.
Splashtours drives every day in July and August.
In this video you can also see a Mercedes Benz bus of the RET and the hotel SS Rotterdam cruise ship.
Amsterdam gets a splashtour too.

De Amfi-bus, splashbus van de Splashtours Rotterdam rijdt over de weg in Katendrecht en rijdt het water in en vaart in de richting van de Euromast en Erasmusbrug langs de kade terug langs SS Rotterdam om daarna weer het land op te rijden.
De tour start en eindigt bij de Euromast. Het geeft je een unieke ervaring door Rotterdam.
Splashtours rijdt elke dag in juli en augustus.

Christmas wine villages in Alsace, France
Christmas markets of three wine villages in Alsace, France including Kaysersberg, Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé are wonderful to visit during the holidays in December. These villages come to life with festive decorations, music, foods, and many people shopping in the festive atmosphere.The wines of Alsace are world famous especially white wines, the Rieslings, the Gewurztraminers and other varieties of white wine. Kaysersberg is a typical village name reflecting the Germanic heritage of this eastern region of France. We also visit an old castle up on a mountain, Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg, originally constructed back in the late Middle Ages.
Walking through the historic villages at twilight is a thrill, with the natural light of sunset in the background and Christmas lighting up the streets and shops. And how about some wine tasting? After all we’re at the wine villages and it's a great opportunity to sample their local variety of wines.

Oude bus van de RET in Rotterdam bij station Kralingse Zoom.
DAF bus voertuig 310 van de RET vertrekt van station Kralingse Zoom in Rotterdam richting RET metro remise 's-Gravenweg als speciale metrodienst, pendelbus voor de open dag op de remise.
Daf Hainje bus voertuig 938 van de RET reed samen met deze bus als metrodienst op deze dag.
Dit was op de open dag van de RET metro remise 's-Gravenweg voor 50 jaar metro Rotterdam. In februari 2018 was het oudste metrostel daarvoor op transport gebracht naar de remise en metrostation Blaak.

Past performances include recitals in Boston, Seattle, and Majorca. The first metro went on transport coming from the Hillegersberg via the highway to the RET metro depot 's-Gravenweg in Rotterdam!
Metrotype MG2 (type M) metro vehicle 5024 drove on February 9, 1968 the first metro ride from Rotterdam Central Station to Zuidplein.
This metro vehicle was at metrostation Blaak from February 7 to 13 for everyone to watch.

Lopen langs het eerste materieel, oudste metro van Rotterdam en Nederland met een kijkje in het originele, gerenoveerde schone interieur en de cabine!
De metro kwam op transport van de Hillegersberg via de snelweg naar de RET metro remise 's-Gravenweg in Rotterdam!
De metro is opgeknapt door een team van RoMeO.
Metrotype MG2 (type M) metrostel 5024 reed op 9 februari 1968 de eerste metrorit van Rotterdam Centraal naar Zuidplein.
Ter gelegenheid van het 50 jaar bestaan van de Rotterdamse metro (#50jaarMetro) is het eerste materieel, de oudste metro van Nederland weer terug op het metrospoor na meer dan 15 jaar niet gereden te hebben.
Van 9 tot en met 13 was het metrostel van buiten en binnen te bewonderen op metrostation Blaak, spoor 1 in Rotterdam (metrolijn A, B, C). De metro's naar Schiedam en De Akkers rijden via spoor 3.
In deze opname is de metro te zien op metrostation Blaak waar de metro's van metrolijn A, B en C rijden.
Als sneltram heeft deze metro nooit gereden omdat dit een echte metro was, zonder pantograaf om stroom af te nemen van de bovenleiding.
De 5200-serie metro's type SG2 (type T) kwamen hier te rijden en op de 5300-serie na is al het materieel daarna ook voorzien van een pantograaf en geschikt voor de sneltramlijn en sinds de aanschaf rijden op de sneltram dus ook metro's van de 5400, 5600 en 5700-serie.
De 5500-serie wordt daar niet in dienst gepland omdat die voor RandstadRail metrolijn E bedoelt is. Inzet komt soms voor.
De 5000 en 5100-serie reden op de Noord-Zuidlijn, later Erasmuslijn en nu metrolijn D geheten tussen Rotterdam Centraal en De Akkers.
Deze metro's reden niet in dienst op de Oost-Westlijn, later Calandlijn, en nu metrolijn A, B en C geheten tussen De Terp en Marconiplein. De metro's reden niet meer in dienst toen de metrolijn van Marconiplein naar De Akkers in gebruik genomen werd en is daar nooit in of buiten dienst voorgekomen.

Restoration begins in public on Rembrandt's 'Night Watch'

Restoration work has begun on Rembrandt's iconic Night Watch painting at a museum in Amsterdam.
The whole process can be watched by visitors to the museum as the enormous painting is too big to move, and is being restored inside a giant glass box.
STORY-LINE :
Working in a specially designed glass chamber, researchers at the Rijksmuseum have begun the painstaking examination and restoration of the huge painting by the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn .
The 1642 painting last underwent significant restoration 40 years ago but is now starting to show blanching in parts of the canvas.
This latest restoration is being done in public, and can also be watched live online.
The museum's general director, Taco Dibbits says the process will reveal the secrets of this epic painting. This is the first time that we can actually make a full body scan and that we can discover which pigments he used not only through making little samples but with scanning the entire surface. And what we've seen with our last conservation of the two Rembrandt full-length portraits that we acquired with France is that you can see very well with these techniques which changes Rembrandt made. And we don't know much about how Rembrandt made this painting. And now we hope to discover more and really get a glimpse into the kitchen of the artist.
The painting of a citizens' militia has suffered in the past.
During the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, it was hidden along with other valuable artworks in a cave in the southern city of Maastricht.
In 1975 a man slashed it with a knife, leaving 12 scars in the canvas, and in 1990 an attacker sprayed acid on the canvas damaging the varnish.
It took restorers only a couple of weeks to repair the damage inflicted by the acid.
The painting has been retouched many other times in the past and the later additions are starting to fade.
Before the latest restoration can begin, experts will photograph and scan the painting to evaluate its condition.
They will build up a detailed digital picture by merging 12,000 separate images as well as using X-ray technology to peer through the surface.
Petria Noble is the head of Paintings Conversation at Rijksmuseum says the huge size of the painting means they will retreive a lot of data.
I think the most challenging is the, because of the size of the painting we're going to be collecting so much data and the correlation of that data and the interpretation of that data will be enormous. Just in terms of photography, there'll be more than 12,000 images that will just make up one total image. And then you can imagine that with each of the modalities with the chemical imaging that we're going to do, the correlation of all that data. So I think the huge challenge will be studying all that material, interpreting all that material and then trying to come to an understanding of actually what it means for the condition and the and how the picture was painted.
More than 2 million people visit the Rijksmuseum each year, which has the world's largest collection of Rembrandt works. The Golden Age master is known for his innovative use of light and rebellious compositions.
The museum is planning to finish the research phase of the Night Watch in May 2020 with a detailed report that willl include recommendations for the restoration treatment of the painting.
The restoration project comes in a year that marks the 350th anniversary of the artist's death in 1669 and is part of a Year of Rembrandt at the museum.
