The New Jerusalem Monastery was founded in 1656 by Patriarch Nikon as a patriarchal residence in the vicinity of Moscow. The monastery took its name from the concept of New Jerusalem. This site was chosen for its resemblance to the Holy Land. The River Istra represents the Jordan, and the buildings represent the 'sacral space' or holy places of Jerusalem.
In his time, Patriarch Nikon recruited a number of monks of non-Russian origin to populate the monastery, as it was intended to represent the multinational Orthodoxy of the Heavenly Jerusalem.
In the 17th century, the New Jerusalem Monastery owned a large library, compiled by Nikon from manuscripts taken from other monasteries. By the time of the secularisation of 1764, the monastery possessed some 13,000 peasants.
In 1918, the New Jerusalem Monastery was closed down. In 1920, a museum of history and arts and another of regional studies were established on the premises of the monastery. In 1935, the Moscow Oblast Museum of Regional Studies was opened in one of the monastic buildings.
In 1941, the German army ransacked the New Jerusalem Monastery. Before their retreat they blew up its unique great belfry, the towers were demolished, the vaults of the cathedral collapsed and buried its famous iconostasis, among other treasures .
However in 1959, the museum was re-opened to the public.
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the New Jerusalem Monastery was handed back to the Orthodox Church.
In March 2009 Russian president t Dmitry Medvedev signed a presidential decree on the restoration and renovation of the New Jerusalem Monastery. By June 2016, the main cathedral had been greatly restored and redecorated and the great belfry was rebuilt, to the original plans

The pilgrimage to the Holy Land starts right in the centre of Russia, 55 kilometers to the northwest of Moscow, on the banks of the river Istra. Here you will discover a Russian holy place. In 1656, the Monastery of the New Jerusalem was established by order of His Holiness Nikon, the most renowned patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Russia has always been known for its monasteries. These churches of white stone, decorated with golden domes, were perceived as an image of the heavenly Jerusalem.
The New Jerusalem was intended to become not only the spiritual center of Russia, but also of the entire Orthodox world.
Each part of this place was given an iconic name from the Holy Land. Thus, the Istra river was renamed the Jordan, and the surrounding hills received the biblical names of Calvary, Bethany and Mount Tabor.
The construction of the Cathedral of the Resurrection was based on the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and includes copies of key places related to Christ’s resurrection. It took 113 years to complete.
After the October Revolution, the Monstery was closed and turned into a museum.
During the Second World War, the retreating Wehrmacht forces destroyed the monastery. At the Nuremberg trials, this fact was considered as a crime against humanity.
Restoration work begun almost immediately. The chapel of the Mother of God, Christ on the Cross, and the Holy Sepulchre Chapel miraculously escaped destruction.
The present renaissance of life at the monastery began in 1995 with the arrival of new priests. In 2011, with the renovation completed, the cathedral was transferred into the hands of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Moscow Choral Synagogue
The synagogue is located close to the former Jewish settlement in Zaryadye. Moscow city authorities had officially banned synagogue construction inside Kitai-gorod, and thus the synagogue was built one block east from its walls. In 1881, the community hired architect Semeon Eibuschitz, an Austrian citizen working in Moscow. However, his 1881 draft plan was not approved by authorities. The second draft, also by Eibuschitz, was approved in July, 1886, and construction began on May 28, 1887. In 1888, the city intervened again and required the builders to remove the completed dome and the exterior image of the scrolls of Moses. Construction dragged on for five years, until the authorities once again banned it in 1892, giving two choices: sell the unfinished building or convert it into a charity.
During the Russian Revolution of 1905, the Czarist government was forced to lift all bans on worship, so Jews, Old Believers, and other minority faith groups were free to build their places of worship anywhere. Eibuschitz had died in 1898, and so the community hired architect Roman Klein to finish the construction. The synagogue opened in 1906. It operated throughout the Soviet period, although authorities annexed some parts of the original building for secular purposes in 1923 and 1960.

The monastery New Jerusalem, Cephalonia, Greece
The video was captured in August 2015. My family was visiting the monastery when we had the blessing to venerate the Holy Relics of the Greek Saint Gerassimos. He created this beautiful monastery in 16th century and since then the New Jerusalem has been a pillar of the Orthodox Christianity on the Island.

Sep 25, 2012 Russia_Medvedev and Patriarch Kirill inspect restoration of monastery
Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia visited a monastery in the town of Istra, just outside the Russian capital on Tuesday.
They inspected the ongoing restoration work at New Jerusalem Monastery, which was founded in 1655.
In Soviet times it became a museum and was then ransacked by the Nazis during World War II.
The monastic life of the monastery was restored after it was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1994.
Dmitry Medvedev praised the achievements of the people who originally built the monastery, given the limited technology available in the 17th century.
He underlined that all restoration work should be completed on schedule.
