Monastic Island of Reichenau - UNESCO World Heritage Site
A tour of the UNESCO World Heritage monastic island in Reichenau, at Lake Konstanz in Germany. This monastic community was founded in the 8th century, and over 20 churches and chapels were built on the island, though only three of them survive. Come along with me as I visit each, marvelling at the incredibly well-preserved frescoes and paintings inside!

Carolingian Westwork and Civitas Corvey - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Carolingian Westwork and Civitas Corvey is an interesting and unusual UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has two distinct facets: the Carolingian-era Westwork (or facade) of a church, dating back to the 9th century, while the Civitas Corvey is the archaeological remains of a town and monastery that grew up around the church. Both are strongly associated with Charlemagne and his successor Louis the Pious, as well as the Christianisation of Germanic tribes, playing a key role in the development of Europe. Let's have a closer look!

Muskau Park is a landscape park in the Upper Lusatia region of Germany and Poland.
It is the largest and one of the most famous English gardens in Central Europe, stretching along both sides of the German–Polish border on the Lusatian Neisse.
The park was laid out from 1815 onwards at the behest of Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau (1785–1871), centered on his Schloss Muskau residence.
In July 2004, Muskau Park was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
A fortress on the Neisse at Muskau was first mentioned as early as the 13th century under the rule of Margrave Henry III of Meissen.
The founder of the adjacent park was Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau (1785-1871), the author of the influential Remarks on Landscape Gardening and owner of the state country of Muskau from 1811.
After prolonged studies in England, in 1815 during the time when the northeastern part of Upper Lusatia fell to Prussia, he laid out the Park.
As time went by, he established an international school of landscape management in Bad Muskau and outlined the construction of an extensive landscape park which would envelop the town in a way not done before on such a grand scale.
The park covers 3.5 square kilometers of land in Poland and 2.1 square kilometres in Germany.
It extends on both sides of the Neisse, which constitutes the border between the countries.
The 17.9 km2 buffer zone around the park encompassed the German town Bad Muskau in the West and Polish Łęknica in the East.
While Muskau Castle is situated west of the river, the heart of the park is the partially wooded raised areas on the east bank called The Park on Terraces.
In 2003 a pedestrian bridge spanning the Neisse was rebuilt to connect both parts.
After the Revolutions of 1989 the German and Polish administration joined forces in the redevelopment of the park ensemble.
Since Poland entered the Schengen Area in 2007, visitors may freely explore both parts of the park without border checks.

Neuschwanstein Castle is a nineteenth-century Romanesque Revival palace on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany.
The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and as a homage to Richard Wagner.
Ludwig paid for the palace out of his personal fortune and by means of extensive borrowing, rather than Bavarian public funds.
The castle was intended as a home for the king, until he died in 1886.
It was open to the public shortly after his death.
Since then more than 61 million people have visited Neuschwanstein Castle.
More than 1.3 million people visit annually, with as many as 6,000 per day in the summer.
In 1868, the ruins of the medieval twin castles were completely demolished; the remains of the old keep were blown up.
The foundation stone for the palace was laid on September 5, 1869; in 1872 its cellar was completed and in 1876, everything up to the first floor, the gatehouse being finished first.
At the end of 1882 it was completed and fully furnished, allowing Ludwig to take provisional lodgings there and observe the ongoing construction work.
In 1874, management of the civil works passed from Eduard Riedel to Georg von Dollmann.
The topping out ceremony for the Palas was in 1880, and in 1884, the king was able to move into the new building.
In the same year the direction of the project passed to Julius Hofmann, after Dollmann had fallen from the King's favor.
The palace was erected as a conventional brick construction and later encased in various types of rock.
The white limestone used for the fronts came from a nearby quarry.
The sandstone bricks for the portals and bay windows came from Schlaitdorf in Württemberg.
Marble from Untersberg near Salzburg was used for the windows, the arch ribs, the columns and the capitals.
The Throne Hall was a later addition to the plans and required a steel framework.
The transport of building materials was facilitated by scaffolding and a steam crane that lifted the material to the construction site.
Despite its size, Neuschwanstein did not have space for the royal court, but contained only the king's private lodging and servants' rooms.
