Catherine Palace Pushkin St Petersburg Russia Gorgeous Day!
Now, one of the highlilghts of our St Petersburg trip, the Catherine Palace at Pushkin. This was the summer palace of the Russian Tsars. This place was almost destroyed (80%) during World War II, before the Germans retreated after the seige of Leningrad, now called St Petersburg, (yes the Germans controlled this part), they burnt the Palace. Restoring it has taken decades, with work still ongoing. Description of the Palace from Wiki:
The residence originated in 1717, when Catherine I of Russia hired German architect Johann-Friedrich Braunstein to construct a summer palace for her pleasure. In 1733, Empress Elizabeth commissioned Mikhail Zemtsov and Andrei Kvasov to expand the Catherine Palace. Empress Elizabeth, however, found her mother's residence outdated and incommodious and in May 1752 asked her court architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli to demolish the old structure and replace it with a much grander edifice in a flamboyant Rococo style. Construction lasted for four years, and on 30 July 1756 the architect presented the brand-new 325-meter-long palace to the Empress, her dazed courtiers, and stupefied foreign ambassadors.[citation needed]
More than 100 kilograms of gold were used to gild the sophisticated stucco façade and numerous statues erected on the roof. It was even rumoured that the palace's roof was constructed entirely of gold. In front of the palace a great formal garden was laid out. It centres on the azure-and-white Hermitage Pavilion near the lake, designed by Mikhail Zemtsov in 1744, remodelled by Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli in 1749 and formerly crowned by a grand-gilded sculpture representing The Rape of Persephone. The interior of the pavilion featured dining tables with dumbwaiter mechanisms. The grand entrance to the palace is flanked by two massive circumferences, also in the Rococo style. A delicate cast-iron grille separates the complex from the town of Tsarskoe Selo.

Catherine Palace - Pushkin - St Petersburg Russia
Catherine Palace (known until 1910 as the Great Palace of Tsarskoe Selo) is a Rococo style royal palace located in Pushkin, south of St Petersburg in Russia. It was built in 1717 and later extended and was the summer residence of the Russian tsars. The palace was almost destroyed in World War II but most of the palace has been restored to its former glory. Of the 58 halls destroyed during the war years, 32 have been recreated. Video includes footage of most of the palace rooms covered by the official tour groups, but no filming was permitted in the Amber Room.

Rare Cranach exhibition to open in Moscow | DW News
A rare exhibition is opening in Moscow showcasing art works that have been hidden in Russia since the end of World War II. 50 works by Renaissance father-and-son painters the Cranachs are going on display in the Pushkin Museum.
RUSSIA: PRICELESS WORKS OF ART HANDED BACK TO GERMANY (2)
German/Nat
XFA
Priceless art pieces stolen by the Russians from Germany at the end of the Second World War have been handed back.
In a reciprocal arrangement, three 18th century art pieces from Peter the Great's famed Amber Room are being returned to Russia, by Germany, more than half a century after being stolen by retreating Nazi troops.
Meanwhile the German Culture Minister, Michael Naumann toured Moscow's leading fine arts museum, the Pushkin Museum, on Friday.
The German embassy in Moscow became the scene on Friday of a unique moment in history.
The Russians gave Germany back priceless works of art, stolen from a Bremen museum in 1945.
On display on Friday were the one hundred and one graphics and watercolors, including art by Albrecht Durer, Manet, Goya and Toulouse-Lautrec, already wrapped up for the journey back to Bremen.
After the paintings were packed away for shipment, German Culture Minister Michael Naumann met his Russian counterpart Mikhail Shvydkoi at the Russian Culture Ministry.
The two countries have started to cooperate with each other to locate national treasures.
Naumann is to hand over a mosaic and a chest of drawers from Peter the Great's famed Amber Room at a ceremony on Saturday.
On Friday, Klaus Naumann said he hoped the exchange of stolen artwork would increase the level of trust the two countries placed in one another.
SOUNDBITE: (German)
This is a private initiative within a political framework of cooperation between our two countries. This is the first step that can be seen as a trust-building measure that will lead to more exchanges of art.
SUPER CAPTION: Klaus Naumann, German Culture Minister
The Russian culture minister also welcomed the swap.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Now we have a legal basis for negotiations and I should stress that negotiations are always better than not talking.
SUPER CAPTION: Mikhail Shvydkoi, Russian Culture Minister
The gold pieces disappeared from Germany at the end of World War Two.
For forty years they were considered lost.
Only a few years ago the Russian government admitted that the pieces were in its possession.
While touring the Pushkin Museum, Naumann looked at gold found in Troy by the famous German archaeologist Henrich Schlieman.
Naumann will hand over a mosaic at a ceremony which will take place at the Yekaterinsky Palace outside St. Petersburg, the royal residence that once included the Amber Room.
A chest of drawers was being sent to Russia separately.
The 18th-century Amber Room, so-called because of the magnificent panels of golden-brown amber that lined its walls, was presented by Prussian King Frederick William to Czar Peter the Great.
Nazi soldiers looted the palace in World War II and stripped the Amber Room bare as they retreated from their failed campaign against Stalinist Russia.
The room's contents were moved to a castle in Koenigsberg, now the Russian city of Kaliningrad, and disappeared from there in 1945.
The German woman who bought the chest recognized it in a TV report on the Amber Room and turned it over to authorities in 1997.
It is not known what she paid for it.
The mosaic was found in the possession of a man in Bremen, Germany in 1997.
The city bought it to avoid a lengthy legal battle.

Saint Petersburg, Catherine Palace - Russia 4K Travel Channel
It is almost a miracle if one sees pictures of the Catherine Palace after the 2nd World War and then stands today in front of the reconstructed palace. After the war it was completely burnt out, the roof was missing and the bare brick walls soar into the air.
Today, it shines once again in the old splendor of the 18th century.
But from the beginning. We reach Puschkin, a suburb, about 25 km south of St Petersburg directly from the airport. After leaving the car, we stand in front of a small church, the Church of the Annunciation. Empress Elisabeth I built it at the location, where Catherine I once set up a wooden church.
To the right is the Lyceum, where Pushkin spent 6 years. On the left is a park with a monument of Pushkin.
A part of the Orchestra the Catherine Palace plays in front of the entrance to the Catherine Palace.
We walk around the buildings of the forecourt to get an overall impression of this imposing building. Originally, all facade decorations were gilded, but after a short time, it was clear that due to the weather this was not a good idea. Catherine II had them replaced with ocher-colored paint. Only the domes of the church remained gilded. This did not change the overall impression very much.
Artfully designed fences and entrance gates shield the grounds. Chinese temples and figures adorn this part of the park. In the background is a Chinese village. In the distance, we see the arsenal. This part of the park also houses the Alexander Palace.
We enter the Catherine Palace via the large stairwell, decorated with white Carrara marble. Chinese vases adorn the walls. We come to the ballroom. It is decorated with extensive gold-painted decorations so that we just can't stop wondering. After that, we turn in the opposite direction.
An almost endless set of rooms for guests, food, and bedrooms follows. Notable among many decorative details are miniature landscapes and artificial fruit bowls on the dining tables, as Catherine II liked it.
Among all these rooms is also the Amber room.
Originally built for the Berlin Palace, the Prussian king Frederick William I exchanged it with the Tsar Peter the Great against Dragoons.

Russia - Moscow - Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts
The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts is the largest museum of European art in Moscow,
The museum's current name is somewhat misleading, in that it has no direct associations with the famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, other than as a posthumous commemoration of his name and fame.
The holdings of the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts currently include around 700,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, applied works, photographs, and archaeological and animalistic objects.
Because a large part of the museum was temporarily inaccessible due to works, this video only gives a very incomplete picture of the richness of the collection of works of art.

T/I: 11:40:22 FE 10:32:56
The controversial archeological collection, Gold of Troy, will be seen by the public for the first time in over half a century when an exhibition of the most valuable pieces of the so called Schlieman collection opens in Moscow this week. Two hundred and fifty-nine priceless objects in nineteen
bulletproof glass cases will be put on public view in Moscow's Pushkin Museum on Tuesday, April 16. The whole collection consisting of 637 pieces was confiscated in Germany in 1945 at the end of World War Two by the Red Army. The treasures were brought to Moscow and then divided between The
Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg and Moscow's Pushkin Museum. The Pushkin got the most valuable part of the collection, composed of objects made in gold, silver, crystal and precious stones. Since the Middle Ages travellers had tried to find the site of the ancient city of Troy. In 1873, at Hissarlik in Turkey, Heinrich Schlieman, a German amateur archeologist, discovered a unique complex of treasures recognized by archeologists as Trojan artifacts.

Moscow WWII Victory Museum - Largest Collection of WWII military equipment
Walk through the military equipment collection at the Victory Museum in Moscow on June 12, The Day of Russia, with numerous tanks, airplanes, boats and artillery, as well as many outdoor exhibits. Equipment includes European, American and Russian equipment.
Music in the background is popular Russian music from the time of WWII.
The museum is located at Park Pobedy, or Victory Park in Moscow and includes a large indoor display, as well.
The struggle against Germany in WWII was the bloodiest in Soviet Union history. An estimated 15 million civilians died, 11 million soldiers, and a 3-year blockade of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) starved a million people. The Soviet Union bore the brunt of German aggression. Russian soldiers held on and Moscow and St. Petersburg never fell. Sixty percent of households lost someone in the war. Even 80 years later the struggle is remembered solemnly as the great patriotic war for survival.
The Germans suffered three-quarters of their wartime losses fighting the Red Army.
The Victory Museum in Moscow is the largest museum of military history in the Russian Federation. The museum hosts the largest collection of World War II military equipment in Europe.

Vodka Museum in Moscow Russia
OK, this one is easy. Where in the world would you expect to find a museum of Vodka and why? Moscow and because it is so much a part of Russia, more common than beer or wine! The history though reveals that although Vodka is certainly associated with Russia it's roots go back to a different and very unusual beginning.

The Peter and Paul Cathedral is located inside the Peter and Paul Fortress along the Neva River in St. Petersburg. It is the oldest building in St. Petersburg and the second tallest after the television tower.
In the early 20th century, it was still used as a prison by the tsarist government.
Today it has been adapted as the central and most important part of the State Museum of Saint Petersburg History. The museum has gradually become virtually the sole owner of the fortress building, except the structure occupied by the Saint Petersburg Mint.
