TORTURE MUSEUM and MEDIEVAL TOILETS - Gravensteen Castle - Ghent, Belgium - LDE S2 E9
Gravensteen (Dutch for “Castle of the Count”) is a massive stone castle smack dab in the middle of a historic square in downtown Ghent. Rounding a bustling corner and seeing a full medieval castle with a moat and turrets towering over quaint Belgian cafes is one of the more random and stunning sights I’ve experienced in my European travels.
Gravensteen in its current form was built in 1180 by Count Philip of Alsace, and over the centuries was used as the seat of the Counts of Flanders, a courthouse, a prison, and a factory. It eventually fell into disrepair, its walls crumbling and its stone used to build other structures, but the city of Ghent saved it from demolition by buying the property and renovating it beginning in 1865.
Aside from a tour of the extensive grounds, halls, and towers, your admission (10 Euro) grants you access to multiple exhibits featuring medieval armor and weapons. The most popular exhibit is the torture museum, which showcases the methods used to extract information from prisoners detained in the castle’s subterranean dungeons while awaiting trial. Pretty gruesome stuff, for sure.

Most VALUABLE Art Thefts in History
Wouldn’t it be amazing to own an original Van Gogh or Picasso? Many would agree, however, the chances of you or I ever owning an original are slim to none. Some feel this doesn’t work for them and go to extra lengths to ensure they have one in their possession and they’re willing to do whatever it takes. Here are some of the biggest art thefts in history!

8 - As pretty as a picture
The Sicilian Mafia stole Nativity with St. Francis and St. Lawrence done by Italian Baroque master Caravaggio, with an estimated worth of $20 million! It was stolen from the Oratory of San Lorenzo in Palermo, Sicily in 1969. Thieves removed the large painting from its frame, and it’s assumed they folded it, as it was so large! Francesco Marino Mannoia confessed to stealing the piece in 1996, but its never been recovered. The painting was reconstructed by computer, and it’s sadly believed that the original was destroyed while being hidden in a barn.
7 - Paint by numbers
The Ghent Altarpiece was painted by Flemish artists Hubert and Jan van Eyck and it dates to the 15th century. It’s a polyptych, meaning it’s divided into sections, and was made for the cathedral of Saint Bavo in Ghent, Belgium. The work has had a tumultuous history, with both the French and Germans stealing parts of it. After WWI, the artwork had all its original components. All that changed in 1934, when thieves broke into the cathedral and removed the lower left panel. It’s never been seen again. During WWII, a replica of the missing piece was painted, and it was done so perfectly, that many believe it’s the original hiding in plain sight.
6 - No oil painting
The Van Gogh Museum is in the Netherlands and it’s a museum dedicated to the works of Vincent van Gogh. It’s also been the location of 2 different heists. In 1991, £500 million worth of paintings were stolen from the walls, but they were found within 30-minutes in a parked car outside. Despite that lucky find, it took a further 3-months to find the thieves. Another 2 paintings were stolen in 2002 and only found 14-years later. Octave Durham, one of the thieves, had to serve 25-months in prison for his involvement in the crime.
5 - Gone Forever
The National Museum of Anthropology was an art thief’s paradise in 1985 when 140 priceless works were removed on Christmas Eve. They took priceless pieces of Mayan and Aztec art. Only the best and most valuable pieces were taken, so it was agreed that the thieves had a strong knowledge of the artwork. 9 police guards were questioned, but none were charged. So far, only a few pieces have been recovered, and it’s believed the rest has been sold to private collectors.
4 - Artful Timing
Stephen Hahn was an American art dealer, who opened the Stephen Hahn Madison Avenue art gallery. He had art stolen from his gallery in 1969, which included works by Cassatt, Monet, Pissarro and Rouault. Ironically, he happened to be chatting to other art dealers about art theft, the exact time that $500,000 of his own work was stolen.
3 - State of the Art
This was the largest art theft in Canada and took place in 1972, where brazen thieves made off with 18 paintings, jewellery and figurines from the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The value today would be in the region of $10.9 million, and included works from Delacroix, Gainsborough and Rembrandt. Only one painting was returned, and the rest have never been recovered. 3 robbers gained access through a skylight that was being repaired and pulled the robbery off over labour day weekend when most people were away. It’s believed to have been an inside job.
2 - Wild at Art
At around 5 am on December 20th, 2007, 3 robbers entered the São Paulo Museum of Art and stole 2 paintings. These were the Portrait of Suzanne Bloch by Pablo Picasso and Cândido Portinari's O lavrador de café. They pulled this off within 3-minutes, and the artwork was missing until January 2008. They were undamaged and returned to the museum.

In short: Ghent, Belgium - Quick exploration of the medieval historic centre
Short movie of some scenic places in the historic centrum of Ghent, the hidden pearl of Belgium.
Ghent is the capital and largest city of the East Flanders province, and the second largest municipality in Belgium, after Antwerp.
The medieval center of Ghent has some of the best things to do in Belgium and features several churches and medieval architecture. The main buildings are called the ‘three towers of Ghent’.

Belgium: The City of Mechelen
Mechelen is a city and municipality in the province of Antwerp, Flanders.
As the river Dijle flows through the city, Mechelen is often referred to as the Dijlestad (City on the river Dijle).
It is one of Flanders' prominent cities of historical art, with Antwerp, Bruges, Brussels, Ghent, and Leuven. It was notably a centre for artistic production during the Northern Renaissance.
There are many places of interest in this city. Some of them belong to the UNESCO World Heritage, like the St. Rumbold's Cathedral (Sint-Romboutskathedraal) with its dominating tower and the city gate: the Brusselpoort, the last remaining of the city's twelve gates.
Other interesting builidings and spots are the Lakenhal (hall for merchants of woollen cloth) and the 14th century Belfry beside it, they form now the City Hall at the Grand Market square.
The Klein Begijnhof and the Groot Begijnhof (Small and Large Béguinages).
The Refuge of Sint-Truiden and the Refuge of Tongerlo, retreat mansions for distant abbeys.
't Groen Waterke, a picturesque small remnant of bygone canals.
These are just a few of them.
Also there are many interesting facades when you go for a walk in the old center.
Ghent in Flanders with wheelchair
More information: and
In our tour of the most beautiful and accessible places wheelchair in Flanders, Belgium, visited the city of Ghent, we already knew from our trip in 2010 and you can see here.
Ghent falls just start to walk through it, like all cities of Flamencas, they cry out that walking around them, who miss and enjoy its streets and its people. Ghent is no exception and is what we did as we settled on the Hotel NH Gent Belfort, next to City Hall and a few meters from the Belfry.
The walk through Ghent is comfortable and friendly wheelchair with caution will always have with cobblestones is very well maintained.
We can visit the Cathedral and have a real gem: the polyptych The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb. A work of art that moves and is forbidden to photograph and record, however, our video can see a reproduction. The Cathedral is accessible through a well executed and interior runs smoothly except for a higher areas that are accessible with staircase ramp.
The walk will take us through different streets and bridges, always beside their channels. Enjoy terraces with good weather and of course its fantastic beers.
With the tram went to Stam Museum to learn the history of Ghent. The tram is theoretically accessible as it has manual ramp but the driver does not rise to place so we chose to overcome the step with help. This aspect we have notified the responsible tourism and accessibility because it is not reasonable that such things happen.
The museum Stam is the story of Ghent and is installed on the Bijloke Abbey fourteenth century. It is accessed through a well executed ramp and the entire museum is accessible to wheelchair through elevators, ramps and platforms climb stairs.
You can book a guided tour in Castilian and also have free guides in Castilian. I assure you enjoyed it and is highly recommended to complete our vision and knowledge of the city, its history and its people.
A gastronomic level we recommend the Brasserie Belga Queen located in the historic center next to one of the channels. The interior is adapted but fine weather we recommend that you sit on the terrace, the kitchen is spectacular and beautiful environment. Another place to check and we recommend is the Stadsrestaurant Belfort, located next to the Belfry, it is accessed via a lift and has adapted bathrooms have a very broad menu although we recommend the mussels with fries and well regaditos with any beer which as you know you are spectacular.
If you like waffles we recommend the Max cafe where they make the best waffles in Ghent. It is expensive, but has the added value to enjoy an authentic dining experience among a beautiful Art Nouveau style and decor. Since 1839 they have not stopped making waffles and excellent chocolate.
All the places and activities that appear in the video have been tested by me personally and I recommend them.
Thanks for joining us on this trip.

Haunted by History: Colonial-themed party sparks accusations of racism in Belgium
There is outrage in Belgium after a fancy-dress-party at the Royal Museum for Central Africa: partygoers showed up wearing leopard-skin prints and colonial-era costumes, some were in ‘blackface’, or carrying spears and skulls. The museum's party drew a swift backlash online. The museum has apologised for the party, saying it misjudged the situation, and should have imposed clear requirements on the people attending.

The history of Scherpenheuvel, the Belgium place of pilgrimage, begins with an age-old legend.
Around the year 1500, a shepherd found a statuette of Mary in an old oak tree on the Scherpe Heuvel (pointed hill) between the villages of Aarschot and Diest.
When he tried to pick up the statuette he stopped as if petrified. He could not move. His worried master found him a few hours later, frozen in place, with the statuette in his hand.
The master took it from the shepherd's hands and placed it back in the tree. Only then could the man move again. Ever since then Scherpenheuvel has been an important pilgrimage site.

One day in Gent! - Gent - Visit Belgium #24/589
A Belgian Challenge, I would like to visit all 589 Belgian Municipalities. In this video I visit Gent, East Flanders.
I visited Gent with two of my friends, Fabienne & Chloé. We started the day with a 40min boat tour, to have a first impression of the city.
After our boat trip, we had a 'Gentse Waterzooi', which is a typical dish from Gent, with chicken, vegetables and patatoes.
We visited the 'Gravensteen' which is a medieval fortress. They have a beautiful collection.
We walked in the grafitti street of Gent, which I really liked with all the colours. I wouldn't say it's street art, but I have never seen such a colorful street.
We ended our day with a visit to the Saint Bavo's Cathedral. Did you know that you can do some whalespotting in the Cathedral? In 2015 they found a young whale on the bow of a ship entering the port of Ghent. After research was done at the univeristy of Ghent, Leo the whale can now be seen in the cathedral.
