Old Photographs Of Abernethy Perthshire Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Abernethy, Scottish Gaelic: Obar Neithich, a village in Perthshire, situated 8 miles south east of Perth.Abernethy may have been the seat of an early Pictish bishopric, its diocese extending westward along Strathearn. In the 12th century the bishop's seat was moved to Muthill, then Dunblane, but Abernethy remained the site of a small priory of Augustinian canons, founded 1272. This priory was suppressed in favour of a collegiate church under the patronage of the Douglas Earls of Angus, in the 15th century. Remains of the collegiate church survived until 1802. Abernethy was the site of the Treaty of Abernethy in 1072 between William the Conqueror and King Malcolm III of Scotland. The village has one of Scotland's two surviving Irish style round towers. Initially Abernethy railway station opened concurrently with the Edinburgh and Northern Railway on 18 May 1848. When the line was extended this first station was replaced by Abernethy on 18 July 1848. It became part of the North British Railway in 1865, and so into the London and North Eastern Railway. The line then passed on to the Scottish Region of British Railways on nationalisation in 1948. The station was closed by the British Transport Commission on 19 September 1955. Although the line through the station site is still open for trains, as part of the Edinburgh to Aberdeen Line between Perth and Ladybank, the station at Abernethy is closed
.Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway Museum Part 1 S.R.P.S.
The Scottish Railway Preservation Society was founded in 1961, at a time when rapid change was sweeping away much of the infrastructure of the Victorian railways. The general object of the Society is stated in its Memorandum of Association :
'...to establish a Museum of Railways in Scotland whereby there shall be preserved locomotives, rolling stock and other equipment and relics of railways in Scotland and of the Scottish railway industry as may illustrate the characteristics of her railways...'
Railways had a particular effect on Scotland, allowing her to develop from a rather isolated part of the British Isles to a land with great industries, whose engineers were known the world over. The industries of steel, coal, shipbuilding and engineering, which brought prosperity, would not have developed without the railways. Railways connected harbours and allowed fishing fleets a ready market in the growing towns. Railways were used as a deliberate means of bringing development to the Highlands, and those parts which never had a railway did not develop much at all. The Society hopes to illustrate these special characteristics of Scotland's railways.Bo'ness & Kinneil Watch in 1080p
Pictish Symbol Stone Abernethy Perthshire Scotland
Tour Scotland travel video of the Pictish Symbol Stone on visit to Abernethy, Perthshire. The stone was found forming part of the foundations of a local house, and seems to have been trimmed at some point, resulting in the loss of parts of some of the symbols. The main symbol is of a vertical tuning fork, a relatively common Pictish symbol found carved on stones. Underneath it is another common symbol, a crescent and V-rod. Much more unusual are the carvings of a hammer, on one side of the tuning fork, and an anvil on the other.

Pearl Fishing (1961)
Perth, Scotland.
Various shots of the beautiful Scottish countryside; rolling hills and a babbling stream - aah, the joys of nature!
A Hillman estate car pulls up beside the South Esk River; Pearl Fisher Bill Abernethy gets out and, with the help of his father, takes from the roof of the car a primitive-looking canvas boat. Commentator tells us Bill was taught everything he knows about pearl fishing by his father. Bill carries it on his shoulder to the river, gets in and starts to float slowly down the river on the current.
M/S of him lying on his front on the boat, looking for mussels through a glass-bottomed bucket and holding onto a forked stick which he uses to fish the mussels out with.
Nice M/S looking up the river with mountains seen in the background. We then see Bill on the river bank in waders; he climbs down into the river and walks about, looking through the bucket. He finds a mussel and sits on the river bank to open it up. C/U of the open mussel shows there is a pearl inside; Bill puts it in a small cotton-wool-lined tin with lots of others.
C/U of hundreds of pearls spread out o a sheet of paper; one is picked out with tweezers and weighed by jewellers assistant Rosemary McCullum at a goldsmiths in Perth. We pan across another pile of pearls to show some pearl necklaces and brooches.
Note: On file is an article from The Guardian about Bill, and a copy of a letter from Pathe to Bill about the filming of this story.

In this WSB newsfilm clip from Atlanta, Georgia on April 18, 1968, Reverend Ralph D. Abernathy speaks to reporters at a press conference about the Southern Christian Leadership Conference's plans for the Poor People's Campaign.
The clip begins by showing a podium with symbols on it. Next reverend Ralph D. Abernathy, head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), is seen standing with other African American men in front of a microphone; at one point Reverend A. D. King, Dr. Martin Luther King's brother, is seen among the men. Abernathy, wearing a turtleneck and a jumpsuit, announces SCLC will begin the Poor People's Campaign on Monday, April 29 in Washington, D.C. as had been planned before the April 4 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Abernathy reports that he has agreed upon plans for the campaign with other SCLC leaders during recent meetings held in Clayton County, Georgia. Abernathy indicates the purpose of the militant, nonviolent campaign is to force Congress to recognize the national emergency and to deal with the issues of poverty and racism in the United States. He emphasizes that the crisis is that millions of poor people are desperate for decent jobs and secure incomes. The campaign will begin April 29 when Abernathy and about one hundred others will meet with national leaders and present our demands for redress of our grievances. After these meetings, Abernathy reports that he will return to Memphis on May 2 where he will begin the march to D.C. by placing a memorial at the Loraine Motel where Dr. King was assassinated; the clip's audio fades during his comments.
Invisible Roses A site-specific work for the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago's 50th Anniversary
Handed a map to the performance, museum patrons unfold the paper, noting it is blank other than a simple instruction to locate roses. They begin a sort of scavenger hunt in the museum, with Fresh sod squishing underfoot welcoming them to a display of a thousand roses.... those rose petals unlock the real, previously invisible map to the performance. During the cousre of the work, sensory illusionist and magician Jeanette Andrews leads the audience in a series of illusions, magic, experiments. The scent of wet dirt imbues audience members with magical powers, and viewers use a single piece of fabric to create the impossible... For this work, Andrews returned to the Museum of Contemporary Art with a site-specific performance exploring concepts of certainty and being hidden in plain sight. Responding to Christo and Jean-Claude's fabric wrapping of the MCA’s building in 1969, Andrews’ series of mysterious installations and interactive performances serve as a celebration of the museum’s future.

Atlanta: Center for Civil and Human Rights
The Center for Civil and Human Rights is a museum dedicated to the achievements of both the civil rights movement in the United States and the broader worldwide human rights movement. Located in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, the museum opened to the public on June 23, 2014.
The Center was initially conceived by Evelyn Lowery, the wife of Joseph Lowery, and Juanita Abernathy, the widow of Ralph David Abernathy, along with former Atlanta mayor Andrew Young and longtime House Representative John Lewis, all of whom were part of the movement to grant civil rights to African-Americans during the 1960s.
The Center hosts a number of exhibitions, both permanent and temporary, that not only tell the history of the civil rights movement in the United States, but how that period is related to more contemporary human rights struggles around the world.
Voice to the Voiceless: The Morehouse College Martin Luther King, Jr. Collection contains personal effects that belonged to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The exhibit tells Dr. King's story from his youth through to his assassination and its aftermath and includes such papers as drafts of Letter from Birmingham Jail and Drum Major Instinct, a sermon King delivered not long before his death.
Rolls Down Like Water: The American Civil Rights Movement is an interactive gallery that opens with examples of segregation in the United States as embodied in Jim Crow laws and signs designating facilities as whites only.
Spark of Conviction: The Global Human Rights Movement, unlike the other exhibits, is non-linear in design. The exhibit includes a rogues gallery of dictators, like Adolf Hitler and Augusto Pinochet, and counters them with images of modern-day activists who work to improve conditions of women and LGBT individuals around the world.

Elgin Museum Collection Highlight: Kinneddar Pictish Stone
Janet Trythall, Vice-President of The Moray Society and volunteer at Elgin Museum, talks about her favourite object from the Museum's collection – a Pictish stone from Kinneddar (Drainie) (ELGNM: 2009.11) classified as Class II (by the Romilly & Allen classification scheme). The stone is sandstone, carved on one face with a cross. The cross is decorated with an ornamented central boss, and traces of other ornamentation can be seen on the arms. In the panels surrounding the cross are more “traditional” Pictish symbols: (clockwise from bottom left) a comb symbol, a possible mirror, and fragments of key patterning.
In 1953, the ruins of the first Drainie Church were cleared to make way for a new RAF runway. The removed stones were deposited in the grounds of Gordonstoun School. This particular stone was single out as being of importance in 1965. It was loaned to Elgin Museum in 1994 and formally donated to the Museum in 2009.
This film was made possible thanks to the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, and was produced as part of Elgin Museum's Year of History, Heritage & Archaeology 2017 programme of events.
