Vietnam is a multi-ethnic country, which is composed of 54 ethnic groups. With a view to preserving and presenting the cultural heritages of these ethnic groups, the Vietnamese Government decided to establish a museum of ethnology in Hanoi. Hence, the today's Vietnam Museum of Ethnology was constructed on the land of 9,500 square meters on Nguyen Van Huyen Street, Cau Giay District, around 8 kilometers from the city centre.

Ethic Vietnamese or Highland Vietnamese Circa 1940
They are Vietnamese who lives in the highland areas through out Vietnam. There are around 53 ( fifty three ) such ethic groups. They have different languages, different tribal customs etc. The low land Vietnamese, or the mainstream Vietnam regard highland people as brothers and sisters who happen to take different adaptation paths through out the 5,000 ( five thousands ) years of Vietnamese mythological and written histories.
(
-- In fact, legend has it that Lạc Long Quân, or The Dragon King of the Lạc people, met and married Âu Cơ, a Mountain Fairy. Âu Cơ gave birth to a bag that had a hundred ( 100 ) eggs, later hatched into a hundred ( 100 ) little kiddies ( imagine that! )... later on, they parted way, Lạc Long Quân led 50 ( fifty ) down the mountains, while Âu Cơ and the other 50 ( fifty ) stayed in the mountains.
This is the beginning of The Hundred Viets ( or Yuehs ) -- in which Lạc Việt is now Vietnamese. The other Viets are predominantly the non-Han Chinese who now live in southern China and possibly surrounding areas.
The age old Lạc Long Quân and Âu Cơ legend explicitly maintains the fifty three ethic groups and mainstream Vietnamese are of the same origin, or same people.
)
During the 2,000 ( two thousands ) years of written histories, there are historical texts proving that Vietnamese kings through out the ages, did marry their daughters to chieftains of different ethic groups -- one might safely conclude that these marriages had been politically motivated.
Indeed, there were marriages to appease the remote and powerful chieftains so that they, even though reluctantly, still accepted the central power and not to launch any military offensives.
The olden Vietnamese term for highland people is người Thượng which simply means People of the highlands or People who live in the mountains.
In the past 50 ( fifty ) years or so, người Thượng has been replaced by dân tộc thiểu số or đồng bào thiểu số ( this later is less popular than the prior ) -- which implies one of our people who are less in number racially/culturally or brothers and sisters who are less in number racially/culturally.
Obviously, the two later terms are designed to be more culturally correct and inclusive.
-- I'm not sure if race is correct in this context anyway. Modern anthropology techniques might prove these ethic groups and mainstream Vietnamese have the similar DNA ( -strains or whatever the correct terminologies are, I'm not certain )!
I don't know if the terms Degar or Montagnard are the English equivalences of dân tộc thiểu số. Because dân tộc thiểu số embraces all 53 ( fifty three ) groups of ethic Vietnamese who live through out the highland regions of Vietnam.
It should be noted that đồng bào thiểu số ways of life have changed significantly -- I don't know if you can find any đồng bào thiểu số groups whom female members still dress in the way depicted in the documentary.
Presently, đồng bào thiểu số suffer the fate as that of the mainstream Vietnamese: their lands have been illegally sieged by the officials of Vietnamese communists, not for any public projects, but on the pretext of public projects and then end up in the hand of these so-called officials!
There are also documented cases of đồng bào thiểu số who follow the Protestant faith have been terrorised by the communists in order to exterminate their religous practices.

This fabulous collection relating to Vietnam's ethnic minorities features well-presented tribal art, artefacts and everyday objects gathered from across the nation, and examples of traditional village houses. Displays are well labelled in Vietnamese, French and English. If you're into anthropology, it's well worth the approximately 200,000d each-way taxi fares to the Cau Giay district, about 7km from the city centre, where the museum is located.Local bus 14 (4000d) departs from P Dinh Tien Hoang on the east side of Hoan Kiem Lake and passes within a couple of blocks (around 600m) of the museum – get off at the Nghia Tan bus stop and head to Ð Nguyen Van Huyen.

Hanoi's museums aren't the best, but they touch your heart
Juliet and I visited Hanoi's museums in December 2014, and in this video, we feature the Ho Chi Minh Museum and the Vietnam Military Museum.
The museums are not thoroughly informative for the foreign tourist, but it leaves gaps for you to think about the path and the price of Vietnam's progress.
