Andover Museum To Host Week Of Archaeology
The Museum of the Iron Age in Andover will be hosting a new event over the summer holidays to get children interested in Archaeology. The museum are currently running a prehistoric exhibition which is soon to be replaced, however it will work alongside the summer funarium in order to give children a hands on experience of the work that archeologists do. We went down to the museum to find out more about the summer funarium but we also couldn't resist finding out a little bit more about the new exhibition coming to the museum at the end of the month.

WWII veteran celebrates 110th birthday in NOrleans
(12 Sep 2019) World War II veteran Lawrence Brooks was serenaded and showered with kisses during a celebration of his 110th birthday at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans Thursday.
Brooks was born Sept. 12, 1909 and served in the predominantly African-American 91st Engineer Battalion, which was stationed in New Guinea and then the Philippines. He was a servant to three white officers in his battalion.
His daily routine included cleaning the officers' sheets, shining their shoes, making sure their uniforms were clean and accomplishing any task these officers asked of him.
Brooks attained the rank of Private 1st Class during the war. He was married to the late Leona B. Brooks and is the father of five children and five step-children.
Museum President and CEO Stephen Watson said Brooks is the nation's oldest living WWII veteran.
Watson was among the guest speakers at Brooks' birthday celebration, which included a serenade of the Army song and Happy Birthday by the museum's singing trio, the Victory Belles.
U.S. Army Col. Justin Swanson gave Brooks the last of his deployment coins given to the soldiers who served under him in Afghanistan in 2016.
The coin featured a bull on one side and deployment information on the other. Swanson said Brooks and other WWII veterans often went months or years without seeing or talking to their families, whereas today, many serving in the military overseas are able to communicate with their families daily.

Hearing Their Voices: Colonization to Reservation
This workshop series will show how the past has framed the way dominant culture views Native women and girls in modern times and how it is connected to violence and argue that until the United States reconciles the violent history with the Indigenous people and fixes the jurisdictional gaps in Indian Country, violence against Indigenous women and girls will only continue.

Manor house
A manor house is a large country house, which was historically the capital residence or messuage within a manor, the basic unit of territorial organisation in the feudal system in Europe, in which dwelled the lord of the manor. It formed the administrative centre of a manor and within its great hall were held the lord's manorial courts, communal meals with manorial tenants and great banquets. The term is today loosely applied to smaller country houses, frequently dating from the late medieval era, which formerly housed the gentry. They were often fortified, but this was frequently intended more for show than for defense. Manor houses existed in most European countries where feudalism existed, where they were sometimes known as castles, palaces, and so on. Many buildings, such as schools, are named Manor; the reason behind this is because the building was or is close to a manor house.

Ship camouflage
Ship camouflage is a form of military deception in which a ship is painted in one or more colors in order to obscure or confuse an enemy's visual observation. Several types of marine camouflage have been used or prototyped: blending or crypsis, in which a paint scheme attempts to hide a ship from view; deception, in which a ship is made to look smaller or, as with the Q-ships, to mimic merchantmen; and dazzle, a chaotic paint scheme which tries to confuse any estimate of distance, direction, or heading. Counterillumination, to hide a darkened ship against the slightly brighter night sky, was trialled by the Royal Canadian Navy in diffused lighting camouflage.
Ships were sometimes camouflaged in classical times. Mediterranean pirate ships were sometimes painted blue-gray for concealment. Vegetius records that Julius Caesar's scout ships were painted bluish-green when gathering intelligence along the coast of Britain during the Gallic Wars. Ships were sometimes painted deceptively during the Age of Sail, while both sides in the American Civil War camouflaged their ships, whether to run blockades or for night reconnaissance.

Haunted Iron Age Hill Forts : The Dark Age Vikings of Berry Mound
A survey of the ancient haunted site. Berry Mound or New Berry Mound is an Iron Age Hill Fort in Worcestershire, England. It was founded by the Celts circa 2nd Century BCE. A large site, over 11 Acres with a Multivallate defence system. Surrounded by a 24ft Rampart, the main entrance was to the east and where most of the existing fortifications which still exist are located. To the north the site was protected by a V shaped ditch (15ft wide & 6ft deep ). To the south, another such ditch protected its flank ( 22ft wide & 7ft deep ).
There was a claim in Victorian times that there were even more ditches along the northern flank, but none of these survive today. As with most Hill Forts today, large stretches of the original fortifications have now been lost. It is the eastern flank which holds the most visible of the original fortifications.
An excavation was performed in 1959, on a section of defensive ditch, but most of the site has never been fully excavated by archaeologists.
Berry Mound is a haunted site. It has real paranormal provenance. Haunted not by the Ghosts of the Celts - but by Danish Pagan Vikings. Berry Mound is also the site of a brutal Dark Age battle. Circa 880 AD - 883 AD, when this site was used as a Fort by invading Danish Vikings there was bloody massacre here. During Danish occupation Berry Mound was called Danes Camp Field or Danes Bury Camp. Eventually the Christian Saxons, under King Alfred the Great, overthrew Danish occupation and proceeded to crush any other Danish resistance. King Alfred and his Saxon army surrounded Berry Mount ( or Danes Camp Field ) and trapped about 1000 Danish Vikings inside. The Saxon army was larger than the Danes, and the Saxons were intent on revenge.
King Alfred the Great gave the Danes one chance to surrender and convert to Christianity - they refused. And so the slaughter began. The Saxons burnt all of the Danes wooden fortifications ( the excavation of 1959 found burnt timbers from the same time period ) and then set about the outnumbered Danes. It was not so much a battle as a slaughter. The Danes were all massacred, the fighting was intense but brief. After the battle the ground beneath was said to flow with the blood of Danes.
It is the Ghosts of these Pagan Danish Vikings who haunt Berry Mound. Their souls unable to move on due to the ferocious nature of their deaths. Not a very active Haunting, these Dark Age Ghosts have not been witnessed by the living many times and so far in the 21st Century, they have yet to make an appearance.
The Ghosts of Berry Mound, or Danes Camp Field, do not seem to notice the living and do not seem to be able to communicate. Quiet mournful Ghosts who stand silently, best seen in the mists of dawn or twilight.

SUMMARY
=======
The Louisiana Purchase Exposition, informally known as the St. Louis World's Fair, was an international exposition held in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, from April 30 to December 1, 1904. Local, state, and federal funds totaling $15 million were used to finance the event. More than 60 countries and 43 of the 45 American states maintained exhibition spaces at the fair, which was attended by nearly 19.7 million people.
Historians generally emphasize the prominence of themes of race and empire, and the fair's long-lasting impact on intellectuals in the fields of history, art history, architecture and anthropology. From the point of view of the memory of the average person who attended the fair, it primarily promoted entertainment, consumer goods and popular culture.
