Woodley Airfield RAF Museum, Berkshire, September 2011
Located on the edge of the former Woodley airfield, the museum tells the story of aviation in Berkshire, including local manufacturers Fairey and Miles. Herald G-APWA is maintained by the The Herald Society and open to the public on occasions. Although small, the museum is well-lit and packed with interesting exhibits and displays. The history of the Miles Aircraft Company is clearly traced, and the activities of the Fairey Company at Woodley are portrayed through words and photographs. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
In May 2008 a new display hall was opened, effectively doubling the floor area of this very interesting museum.
Berkshire's dynamic contribution to aviation history is graphically re-captured at the museum. Run as a charitable trust, the museum is at the historic site of Woodley Airfield, near Reading, U.K. - once the centre of a thriving aircraft industry. Miles and Handley Page aircraft built at Woodley are being re-constructed and exhibited along with fascinating pictorial records and priceless archives.
The museum welcomes group visits and runs an active educational program for schools, linked to National Curriculum requirements, demonstrating the development of aviation techniques. Schools and other groups can be catered for outside normal opening hours, phone 0118 944 8089 for details.

Midgham - Least Used Station in Berkshire
It's time to go to another new 'Least Used' station! Note that the NEW figures for 2016-2017 are out, but Berkshire is still the same, it hasn't changed from the previous year, so starting at Reading on a cold and wet December day, I hopped on the train ...

Ghost of Aldermaston Manor ~ Church ~ & Inn~Berkshire, England.
The Manor House is a Grade II* Listed, Elizabethan style
courtyard house predominantly rebuilt in the 19th Century with a
number of historic features dating back to the 17th Century. The
building incorporates stained glass windows, a large imposing
ornate hand carved staircase, wood panelling in principal rooms
and chimney stacks from the original 1636 house.
The predecessor manor house became a mansion from the wealth of its land and from assistance to Charles I during the English Civil War under ownership of the Forster baronets of Aldermaston after which the estate has alternated between the names Aldermaston Park and Aldermaston Manor.
The estate became dominated by its neo-Elizabethan mansion after a fire of 1843 destroyed one third of the predecessor and various landscape features were added which have resulted in building and grounds
Charles Keyser bought the house in 1893 and his family had the house until 1939. Shortly after the outbreak of World War II the British government requisitioned the estate. During the war, the USAAF HQ XIX Tactical Air Command was stationed at the house and there were anti-aircraft batteries stationed on the grounds.
In 1967, Aldermaston Manor became a Grade II listed building. Blue Circle Industries bought the estate in 1981, and restored the house, and converted it into a hotel and conference centre.
Reported Paranormal Activity
Many of the hotels guest have reported that they have been visited in the night by a spirit. Staff and guests of the hotel have reported being touched, felt someone sat on bed when no one there. Doors have opened and closed by themselves ....

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Maria Hale (occasionally written as Martha Hale) was born in 1791, and lived in Park Cottage on the edge of the court's parkland.It was rumoured that she was a witch, and would turn herself into a hare and sit outside the Falcon pub in Tadley to learn gossip. The hare was shot in the leg by the gamekeeper, and Hale reportedly had a limp thereafter. Other rumours suggest that she cursed villagers' gardens when they refused her request for flowers, and that she bestowed illness upon her son when he left home for Windsor so that he would return.
The United Kingdom Census of 1871 listed Hale as living in Mortimer. At that time the census divided the county into subdivisions, and Aldermaston was within the Mortimer division. She died 8 years later in 1879, and was buried south-west of the church's entrance beside a yew tree. Her coffin was supposedly weighed down with stones and bricks, and the gravediggers jumped on the grave to ensure that she would never rise. It is rumoured that placing a pin in the church door and running around the church three times will summon her ghost.
The Butt Inn in Aldermaston - Is said to be inhabited by a mischievous poltergeist . If you hide in a corner you see the cheeky ghost - whose identity is unknown, turn on the beer taps and slam the doors.
In 2016 ALDERMASTON villagers have said that they would rather see the historic manor house fall further into ruin than new homes built in the village.
That was the outcome of a public meeting held last month, where residents questioned developer Praxis about its plans to build 227 homes at Aldermaston Court; an enabling development to fund the restoration of the manor house and convert it into 23 apartments.
But at a packed meeting at Aldermaston Parish Hall, residents showed their opposition to the scheme.
Neighbours said that they would like to see the manor house restored, but not at the cost of trebling the size of the village.
As of June 2017, offers were being sought for the entire estate known as Aldermaston park and all assets contained therein.
