National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens, Opening, Urgent Conversations: Athens – Antwerp
Urgent Conversations: Athens – Antwerp is the first temporary exhibition in the long overdue public unfolding of the Greek National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (EMST). The project offers a reflective dialogue between the collections of EMST and M HKA, the Flemish Contemporary Art Museum, based in Antwerp. This exhibition commences the program EMST in the World.
The impulse of both Urgent Conversations: Athens – Antwerp and EMST in the World is the necessity of cultural dialogue on a global scale, also within multifaceted Europe. Societies nowadays tend to polarize in 49 % versus 51 % camps, negotiations start from antagonistic positions as a default position, introversion and individualism became entrenched states. There may be loftier aspirations than the capacity of conversation, but its recent fragility often reached critical levels and can be described as an urgent situation.
Urgent Conversations: Athens – Antwerp has been developed bottom up, each time starting from work of a Greek and a Belgian artist, that resonate, searching a notion that arises from this resonance, then adding a third artist from elsewhere in one of the two collections. In this way the exhibition was structured around 22 notions with each time work of three artists in a dialogue around it, the total consisting of more than 70 works from 66 artists.
This exhibition enacts the belief of both museums that works of art may constantly emanate new meanings, open questions and initiate a much desired dialogue, that basic ground for human culture. This project is therefore also a counter-proposal to cultural and curatorial sameness, opting instead for a multitude of convincing constellations of subjects, impossible to exhaust, leading up to discussions concerning both individual and collective realizations, and to actions.
Athens and Antwerp seem to represent two extremes of Europe today, but at the same time Greece and Flanders are both regions of Europe that added many crucial threads to its cultural fabric. Institutions like EMST and M HKA may further cultivate that. EMST in the World will develop in the same vein further dialectical relations between EMST and institutions elsewhere with corresponding aims and practices, geared to the research and curation of contemporary art and other contemporary cultural manifestations.

Magritte, Broodthaers & Contemporary Art
Temporary exhibition: ‘Magritte, Broodthaers & Contemporary Art’
at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium from 13.10.2017 till 18.02.2018
fine-arts-museum.be #expomagritte @FineArtsBelgium
50 years after his passing, René Magritte still fascinates. He questions our views and our minds and endlessly challenges certainties. Magritte’s mysterious and interrogative work continues to intrigue the artistic world far beyond his time, from pop and conceptual art to the most contemporary creations.
The exhibition highlights this legacy through a dialogue between original works by Magritte and their interpretation by modern and contemporary artists.
Marcel Broodthaers undoubtedly best embodies this artistic affiliation: his reflections concern both the status of the object and that of language. Other artists such as Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, César, Sean Landers, David Altmejd, George Condo and Gavin Turk renew our understanding of Belgium’s greatest surrealist.
Over 150 paintings, sculptures, installations, drawings, photographs, films and archival documents are gathered in this unique exhibition. The experience is prolonged in the Musée Magritte Museum, where current creations interact with the largest collection of works by Magritte in the world.

Travel Guide Antwerp, Belgium -Tasty Antwerp: Eilandje
Het Eilandje – ‘The Little Island’ – is so-called for good reason: Antwerp’s oldest port area is surrounded by water. Today, port activity is more concentrated in the north, but the feeling of a port is still very much present. Savour the historical atmosphere of the old loading dock with its monumental warehouses, lanterns, hangars and cobblestones. Three major attractions, MAS | Museum aan de Stroom, the Red Star Line Museum and the Port House, have once again drawn attention to the links between the city and the water.|

Art Brussels showcases Europe's best contemporary art
(20 Apr 2018) LEADIN:
Showcasing one of Europe's best contemporary art selection, the annual Art Brussels fair has just opened its doors.
Established 50 years ago, Art Brussels has become an influential event in the international art scene, with a loyal following among collectors and galleries.
STORYLINE
Art lovers from all over the world take to the Belgian capital for the opening of Art Brussels.
The fair is one of Europe's most prestigious contemporary art events.
Art Brussels features 147 art galleries from 32 countries; it displays the works of over 2,000 international artists, both emerging talents and well-established artists.
Creativity takes countless forms here: nods to the past and references to painting greats stand side by side with trailblazing contemporary artworks.
The show is equally devoted to the discovery of younger, emerging talents in addition to well-known names.
Anne Vierstraete is Art Brussels' director; she says the fair has developed a unique approach that sets it apart from other international art shows.
Art Brussels is somewhat distinct from other art fairs in the way we show the art and the kind of art we show and also the prominence we give to our discovery section.
And so in this we have a profile of showing art that is not necessarily seen at other art fairs. Collectors follow us since years and are very loyal to the fair. So somehow we are a not-to-be-missed rendezvous in the art calendar, Vierstraete says.
Galleries from all over the world, from China, Russia, Cuba, to the United States, Luxembourg and Greece seize this opportunity to showcase their talents.
Founded in 1968, Art Brussels started with just 11 dealers and has become one of Europe's oldest art fairs.
This year marks its 50th anniversary.
Event organizers say there's reason to celebrate as the show has evolved from a minor enterprise to an influential event; it has succeeded in creating an encounter between art and art enthusiasts, artists and collectors.
The secret for enduring the test of time lays in Art Brussels' uniqueness, Vierstraete says.
We last since 50 years. In a very competitive world which has become completely globalised such as the global art scene I really think that we endured because of our specific identity, the director says.
Belgium is known to be a country of collectors and that helps attract artists to the main cities, Art Brussels organizers say.
The Belgian capital, in particular, is a dynamic place where talents can thrive and easily get connected with both peers and curators.
Brussels has a very vibrant art scene which is totally informal because it's also a small city and so everybody is connected, the artists with the curators with the museum directors; and it's all very easy-going. And that, I think, is a bit different because you don't have this hierarchy of the big institutions.
Also the space: there are a lot of artist studios in Brussels because the market is quite affordable; you can rent beautiful spaces, large ones. And so there is kind of a secondary, very vibrant scene in Brussels, Vierstraete explains.
Elena Sorokina is the curator of Mystic Properties, Art Brussels' artistic project, created in tandem with the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) of Ghent.
Sorokina - who's also a curator at HISK - has invited the project's artists to conceive their works as a reflection on one of art history's masterpieces: the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb.
Art Brussels runs from 19 to 22 April.

MAS Museum aan de Stroom Antwerp Belgium
The Museum aan de Stroom (MAS; Dutch for: Museum by the River) is a museum located along the river Scheldt in the Eilandje district of Antwerp, Belgium. It opened in May 2011 and is the largest museum in Antwerp.
History
In 1998 the Antwerp city council decided to build the museum at the Hanzestedenplaats. On 14 September 2006 the first brick of the building was laid. In 2010 museum objects arrived from various other museums like the Etnographic Museum and the Maritime Museum, which both ceased to exist. The museum opened for the public on 17 May 2011
Design
The 60 metre high MAS was designed by Neutelings Riedijk Architects. The façade is made of Indian red sandstone and curved glass panel construction. It is an example of postmodern Art Deco architecture. The MAS houses 470,000 objects, most of which are kept in storage. The first visitor's gallery is the visible store, which contains 180,000 items. The building is located on the spot where the Hanzehuis used to stand. International merchants worked and resided at the Hanzehuis. In the nineteenth century a fire destroyed the building.
Collection and exhibitions
The central focus of the MAS is Antwerp and its many aspects. The main themes are Metropolis, Power, Life and Death, and Antwerp's long history as a major international port. The museum is committed to informing the public using new media. Through the QR codes placed next to most of the exhibits, visitors can access website information in five languages: English, Dutch, French, German and Spanish.
