The War of 1853-1856 is most often known as The Crimean War. But the battle for the Crimea was only one episode of a much bigger war. The confrontation between the Russian Empire on the one hand and the Allied Forces of the British Empire, France, Turkey and the Kingdom of Sardinia on the other affected a huge territory stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Ocean. In fact, it was a war for world domination - in effect a world war.
What were the overt and covert reasons that caused the confrontation between the great powers in the middle of the XIX century? How it all started and what role the Russian Empire ultimately played on the world political stage is all told in this challenging and insightful new four-part documentary series, WORLD WAR 0.

KRYMCHAKS
Krymchaks (The Krymchak people) are a small community within the Crimean population that developed on ethnic-religious basis in the medieval period of the history of the Crimean peninsula. The ethnonym (self-name) Kyrmchak was fixed by the official documents of the Russian Empire in the mid-nineteenth century.
Before the establishment of the Soviet power in the Crimean territory, the Krymchaks confessed Orthodox Judaism according to specific Krymchak ritual of praying which was finally shaped in the late fifteenth - early sixteenth century.
The Kyrmchaks used their own spoken language of the same name (the Kyrmchaks themselves called it Chagatay) up to the mid-twentieth century. This language belongs to the first group of Turkic languages. Nowadays the most Krymchaks speak Russian.
When the Russian colonization of the Crimea started, the Krymchaks lived in a few places in the peninsula. Their most important centre was Karasubazar (present Belogorsk), to which the Kyrmchak community moved from Solkhat (present Staryy Krym) and Caffa (present Feodosiya) in the late fifteenth - early sixteenth century. In Karasubazar the Krymchaks were united by a community, cemaat, and lived on the compact outskirts -- guidebook Krym (published in the 1914) called that part of the city the Krymchak side. Their most important occupations were craft, trade, and farming with gardening and viticulture.
One can only guess the number of the Krymchaks by 1783 due to baron Igelstorm´s account indicates the Krymchaks and Karaims as Jews because they confessed Judaism; according to that account, in both communities there were 1,407 persons of male sex.
According to the population censuses the number of the Krymchaks was; in 1897 -- 4.500 persons; in 1913 -- ca. 7,000 persons; in 1926 -- 6,400 persons; in 1959 -- ca. 2,000 persons; in 1970 -- 1,900 persons; in 1979 -- 1,800 persons; in 1989 -- 1,448 persons. In 1989 there were 604 Krymchaks living on the territory of the Crimea; in 2002 there were only 281.
After taking out Russian citizenship, the Krymchaks suffered discriminative policy as those who confessed Judaism. As a result of that, members of the Krymchak community became impoverished and their culture become debased. The Krymchaks were practically excluded from the Political and cultural life of Russia throughout the nineteenth and the first decades of the twentieth century.
In the years of the Second World War the Nazis organized genocide of the Krymchaks in the Crimea: they killed more than 80% of the whole ethnos.
Occupation of Crimea by German fascists has lead to the genocide of Krymchaks as adherents of orthodox Judaism.
From the end of Second World War to the late 1980s official power´s attitude towards the Krymchaks was dictated by Stalin´s national policy (outlined yet in the late 1930s). From the late 1940s onwards the USSR authorities stopped to give the most Krymchaks passports indicating their nation. This policy undoubtedly resulted in the ethnic consolidation of the Krymchaks and contributed to the appearance of the leaders who can raise and solve questions related to preservation of the national specificity of their people.
Their numbers' estimates range from 1 500 to 2 700 with the most often accepted count of 1 500 of which about 200 live in Crimea (Ukraine), 160 in Russia, 1 000 in Israel and the rest in Uzbekistan, Georgia, United States, Turkey, Germany and Poland.

Karaite Kenassas in Simferopol
Karaites' Kenasas is an amazingly beautiful and unusually harmonic temple complex. For two centuries it was the center of Crimean Karaites' spiritual and religious life. Today it is one of Yevpatoria's most original architectural sights.
Karaites are the most mysterious and scanty Turkic people, representatives of which traditionally profess Karaism - peculiar branch of Judaism. Cavern town Chufut Kale in Bakhchysarai's outskirts used to be their major center in Crimea for a long time. However, after the peninsula was annexed to Russian Empire in the late 18th century, the majority of Crimean Karaites moved to Yevpatoria. At the same time the necessity of the large temple, where the community's representatives could gather for divine services, arose.
Thus, in 1805 a wonderful light building of the Large, or Cathedral, Kenasa - the prayer house meant for festive services - appeared in Yevpatoria's spiritual center. Ten years later the Small Kenasa for regular divine services was built near it, on the place of old (dated by 16th century) Karaites' Temple. Both buildings were carried out in classical style, 'flavored' with Crimean architecture's coloring.
Three elegant inner courtyards lead to the Kenasas' complex. Slabs with Hebrew writings decorate the first one - the Grape Yard. There is also a marble fountain here that served for hand washing before prayer. Slabs with the names of Kenasas' sponsors and marble slabs with information about the most significant events in Karaite community's life decorate the second - the Marble Yard. The oldest slab dates back in 1790. The Marble Yard is notable for marble stele, installed here in memory of Russian Imperator Alexander the Firsts' visit to Kenasas in 1825.
In the year 1921, when Soviet government assumed the power, the Large and the Small Kenasas were closed. Only twenty years later - during the World War II - the Small temple was reopened, and a charity canteen was adjoined to it. The canteen may be seen even today. In the 60s years, the temple complex's premises were occupied by museum of local lore's expositions, sports groups and even by kindergarten. Only in 1999 Kenasas' buildings were returned to Karaites and restored.
Today Karaites' Kenasas are not just a working temple, but a very interesting tourist sight. Excursions are carried out here on free from divine services days. Today an original cafe, offering Karaites' national cuisine, 'Karaman' and the Museum of Karaites' History and Culture function not far from the temple complex.

Mariupol
Mariupol is a city of regional significance in southeastern Ukraine, situated on the north coast of the Sea of Azov at the mouth of the Kalmius river. It is the tenth-largest city in Ukraine and the second largest in the Donetsk Oblast. Population: 461,810 (2013 est.). Following the capture of Donetsk city by pro-Russian insurgents associated with the Donetsk People's Republic in 2014, Mariupol was made the provisional administrative centre of Donetsk Oblast. The city was retaken on June 13, 2014 by government troops and has been under heavy bombardment and the fighting has intensified as of August 2015.
Mariupol was founded on the site of a former Cossack encampment named Kalmius. It was granted city rights in 1778. Mariupol has been a centre for the grain trade, metallurgy, and heavy engineering. The Ilyich Steel & Iron Works and Azovstal propelled Mariupol onto the European stage in the 20th century as one of the largest and most productive plants. Mariupol played a key role in the industrialization of Ukraine. Between 1948-1989 the city was known as Zhdanov due to the Soviet authorities frequently renaming cities after communist leaders. Today, Mariupol remains a centre for industry, as well as higher education and business, a legal centre, and the economic engine of Pryazovia.
