Yakutsk Permafrost Museum
The Permafrost Museum in Yakutsk was fascinating. Great in winter because of no tourists.
This museum is also known as the Institute of cryonics. It was constructed in 1967. It is dedicated to the study of Permafrost.

Animals Found FROZEN In Ice!
Check out these animals found frozen in ice! This top 10 list of amazing animals discoveries has some ancient animals that were frozen in time for eternity!
10. The Yuka Mammoth
The Yuka mammoth is one of the most well known and scientifically valuable animals that have ever been found. It was discovered in 2010 within the Siberian permafrost on the coast of the Laptev Sea in Russia. The most unusual thing about this 39,000-year-old mammoth was that it was mummified, and had the most in-tact mammoth brain ever found, with folds and blood vessels still visible.
Finding specimens like this is incredibly helpful to understanding the species. Studies of the brain showed it to be very similar to modern day elephants, and also led to researchers to developing better ways of storing mammoths in the future when new ones are found. Along with the Yuka mammoth, a number of other ones have been found in the region, although not in as good condition, and have been highly sought after by researchers for a different purpose.
Because of their relatively intact DNA, and their status as an intriguing extinct animal that is very similar to some that exist today, the mammoth is a great candidate for bringing a species back from extinction using cutting edge technology. It is believed that with a bit of luck and perseverance, we might once again see these giants alive and well, and maybe within just a few years! I would definitely love to see that!
9. Moose
It’s rare enough to find an animal preserved in ice, but rarer still is the apparent freezing of two animals when they’re interacting with each other. Well this is what a couple of hikers found in Alaska in 2016.
Beneath 8 inches of ice was the stunning sight of two moose fighting each other, clearly so engrossed in their tussle that they failed to notice the approaching frost. In the fall, males tend to be more aggressive towards each other, likely due to territorial disputes or to gain the attention of a female, and at some point these two managed to get their antlers tangled. They probably drowned in the cold water before being frozen over as temperatures fell.
Soon after their discovery, the moose were removed from the ice by local enthusiasts who wanted to preserve the unusual find forever.
8. Fish
As a fish living in water, ice can be both a blessing and a curse. It’s the unique property of ice floating on top of water that helps to insulate warmth and allow fish to survive falling temperatures, but they aren’t always so lucky. In 2014, a sharp cold eastern wind sent temperatures plummeting very quickly around the island of Lovund in Norway, and instantly froze parts of the ocean.
Unfortunately for a large shoal of fish, thought to be attempting to escape a predator at the time, there was no chance to avoid the approaching ice, and they were frozen in place. The ice sheet was so thick that it was perfectly safe for people to walk across, and capture these amazing images of thousands of fish frozen in time.
This event had a major impact on the local ecosystem, because birds were unable to find any food, so the skies were strangely silent until the ice finally thawed.
7. Yukagir Bison
Siberia is one of the coldest places on earth that has been regularly inhabited for millennia. This makes it the perfect place to find frozen animals like the Yuka mammoth, and close by there was another discovery in 2011, the mummified remains of a Steppe Bison- the ancestor to the modern bison. Discovered by a tribe in the Yana-Indigirka Lowland, the bison was remarkably intact, with its brain and other organs almost perfectly preserved.
This is the most complete Steppe Bison ever to be found, and has allowed researchers to extensively study its brain, heart, digestive system and blood vessels, despite it being well over 9000 years old. With no visible signs of injury, it is thought that the lack of body fat around its abdomen is a clue as to how it died. Most likely from starvation as a result of the rapidly changing environment in the area at the time.
6. Selerikan Pony
In 1968, gold miners digging tunnels, about 30 feet below the surface of the Indigirka River in Siberia, found something surprising- two legs and a tail of a pony sticking through the roof of one of their tunnels. Experts were called in from the Zoological institute of St. Petersburg to help recover the full animal, which they managed to do, apart from its head.
The body turned out to be of a Przewalski (prez walski) Horse, that nowadays is only found in Mongolia, and amazingly this one appeared to have died about 35,000 years ago. Analysis of the remains suggested that the horses lived relatively similar then to how they still do today.

Will Siberia be home to the first cloned woolly mammoth?
Will Siberia be home to the first cloned woolly mammoth? Russian scientists set up new laboratory to resurrect extinct giants
They dominated much of the frozen north for 350,000 years before dying out at the end of the last ice age, but woolly mammoths could soon return to Siberia if Russian scientists are successful.
Researchers in Siberia are opening a new laboratory devoted to studying extinct animal DNA in the hope of creating clones from the remains of creatures found in the permafrost.
The laboratory is sited in Yakutsk, the world's coldest city, has the largest collection of frozen carcasses and remains of ancient animals in the world.
In total is has more than 2,000 remains from prehistoric animals including horses, foxes and woolly mammoths.

8. “STUCKIE” THE DOG
During the 1980’s, a team of loggers with the Georgia Kraft Company discovered a terrifying petrified dog while cutting down a tree in a grove of chestnut oaks in southern Georgia. The dog was found inside of a hollow trunk after the top of the tree was cut off.
7. “BUTTERCUP” THE WOOLLY MAMMOTH
In May 2013, a well-preserved woolly mammoth with a pool of liquid blood under its belly was discovered in the ice on Maliy Lyakhovsky Island in Siberia. During a necropsy that was performed in Yakutsk, scientists collected blood and tissue samples that they hope can be used to clone the animal.
6. Animals in EGYPTIAN TOMB
In April of this year, scientists announced the discovery of an ancient Egyptian tomb containing the mummified remains of a married couple and over 50 animals, including mice, ibex, cats, eagles, and falcons. The tomb was found in the city of Akhmim, which is about four miles from Sohag, and dates back to the Ptolemaic period - more than 2,000 years ago.
5. EXTINCT CAVE LION CUB
In the Yakutia region of Siberia in September 2017, a local resident stumbled upon the well-preserved carcass of a 50,000-year-old extinct cave lion cub on the banks of the Tirekhtykh River. The animal was probably one-and-a-half to two months old when it perished, according to researchers.
4. PETRIFIED HORSE FROM POMPEII
In late 2018, archaeologists working in the ancient town of Pompeii discovered the petrified remains of a harnessed horse. Pompeii was covered in volcanic ash during the massive eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. During the eruption, hundreds of tons of lava and toxic gas were produced, which led to the petrification (or the petrifaction)of the horse, as well as other horses in the same stable.
3. YUKON CARIBOU & WOLF PUP
During the summer of 2016, the mummified remains of an Ice Age wolf pup and caribou calf were discovered in the permafrost by gold miners near Dawson City, Yukon. Both animals were radiocarbon-dated to at least 50,000 years ago. The dog’s head, tail, skin, and fur were still intact. The caribou was nearly equally well-preserved - its remains consisted of its torso, front limbs, and head.
2. ANCIENT EGYPTIAN LIONS
While you already know that some preserved lions were discovered in Siberia, you may be surprised to learn that lion remains have also been found in Egypt. Cats, including lions, were revered in ancient Egypt. One of their gods, Nefertum, was even depicted as a lion, and the goddess Sekhmet had a lion’s head. There was also a lion goddess named Bastet.
1. 42,000-YEAR-OLD CALF
In April of last year, researchers in the Verkhoyansk region of Siberia, Russia announced the discovery of an ancient foal, estimated to be around 42,000 years old. The semi-mummified remains still contained liquid blood inside, and in hopes of someday cloning the species, the body fluids were extracted during an autopsy.

Science is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe.
Contemporary science is typically subdivided into the natural sciences which study the material world, the social sciences which study people and societies, and the formal sciences like mathematics. The formal sciences are often distinguished from the empirical sciences as the former does not depend on empirical observations. Disciplines which use science like engineering and medicine may also be considered to be applied sciences. Science is related to research, and is normally organized by a university, a college, or a research institute.
From classical antiquity through the 19th century, science as a type of knowledge was more closely linked to philosophy than it is now and, in fact, in the West the term natural philosophy encompassed fields of study that are today associated with science such as physics, astronomy, medicine, among many others. In the 17th and 18th centuries scientists increasingly sought to formulate knowledge in terms of laws of nature. As a slow process over centuries, the word science became increasingly associated with what is today known as the scientific method, a structured way to study the natural world.

8. Foal
Earlier this year, in 2018, researchers announced the discovery of a perfectly preserved foal found frozen in the ice! The baby horse, which was uncovered from the melting permafrost in Siberia, was found with its hooves, tail, and skin still perfectly intact, along with the tiny hairs in its nostrils! This foal is estimated to have died between 30,000 and 40,000 years ago.
7. Prehistoric Worms
2018 was a very eventful year for the discovery and investigation of ancient animals found in the Siberian permafrost!! This is fascinating but kind of a scary indicator of just how fast ice is melting…. In July, scientists announced that two nematodes, or microscopic worms that live in the soil, had been brought back to life in a Petri dish after being suspended in a deep freeze in the Siberian permafrost for 42,000 years!!
6. Lion Cubs
In Russia in late 2017, a local resident of Russia’s far northeastern Yakutia region, officially known as the Sakha Republic, discovered the remains of a one-year-old cub in September. This baby big cat was a cave lion, which is believed to have died out about 10,000 years ago. Until this most recent discovery, scientists based their knowledge almost entirely on bones and tracks.
5. CARIBOU CALF & WOLF PUP
Canada’s Yukon territory is dominated by heavy forest cover, but it was once a freezing tundra. In Dawson City, in September of this year, scientists announced the discovery of two Ice Age creatures from the Yukon permafrost, a caribou calf and a wolf pup. Despite having died thousands of years ago, the animals’ fur, skin, and muscles were almost completely intact.
4. Anthrax Spores
Remember how I said there are some things we don’t want coming back?? Anthrax spores is one of those things!! In 2016, there was a zombie outbreak. While this might sound strange, there was an unusual heatwave in western Siberia, causing all kinds of things to thaw out. Including a frozen reindeer that had been hidden in the ice for 75 years. This reindeer had fallen victim to zombie anthrax, a common bacteria found in the wilderness all over the world.
3. Pygmy Woolly Mammoth
A pygmy woolly mammoth carcass that was unearthed in Siberia during August of this year could be evidence of a new species of ‘mini-mammoth’. According to experts, the remains, which were discovered on Kotelny Island, could be nearly 50,000 years old.
2. Sasha the Rhino
In 2014, the 10,000-year-old remains of a woolly rhinoceros were dug up in the Siberian region of Yakutia. Although scientists are unsure of its gender, they named the rhino “Sasha” after the person who discovered it. Researchers were originally baffled by how the perfectly-preserved one-and-a-half year-old rhino died.
1. Otzi the Iceman
I can’t have a list about amazing things found frozen in ice without including Otzi! As you may know by now, he is the world’s oldest natural human mummy!! Otzi died high in what is now the Italian Alps at the age of 45 and remained preserved in the ice for over 5,300 years!! Since before the construction of the pyramids.

SIBERIA, ANYONE? by Harold Sala
Siberia, anyone? Chances are, at least in the dead of winter, there are few who would sign on. Siberia conjures an image of people dressed from head to toe in furs, looking more like someone in a deep freeze than ordinary folks who walk the streets of Manila, Houston, or elsewhere. In fact, Siberian winter temperatures hover around -30 to -50 below in Yakutsk, where one of my heroes has lived for many years.
From the Russian city of Vladivostok, a three-hour flight north and east takes you to Yakutsk, landing on the only air field in the world built on permafrost—ground that stays frozen throughout the entire year. You can visit the permafrost museum here and see the tusks of mastodons—older than written history, for sure. Snow in January can reach as deep as five feet, and, believe it or not, the white stuff may even come floating to earth in freak storms in August.
When I visited this exotic place, I met Yuri Morokhovets, superintendent of the area missionary churches, and asked him, “Do you see the same interest in spiritual things today as was seen immediately following the collapse of communism?’ “Nyet!” he responded saying that the initial curiosity about the God who had been denied by an official policy of atheism for some 73 years has subsided; however, there is still a void in the lives of people that can only be satisfied by a relationship with God.
Behind almost every Christian leader in Russia is a story of God’s redeeming grace. Yuri, for example, was a hard-drinking, carousing truck driver whose mother never ceased to pray for him. When he roused from a drunken stupor, having collapsed on the floor, thinking he was dying, he cried out to God to save him, and his mother’s prayers were answered. Following three years at the former Donetsk Christian University in Ukraine, he headed to Vladivostok, where the Russian submarine fleet had been headquartered, with $50 USD in his pocket and a sack of potatoes that he had brought with him. Now decades later he has given birth to an unknown number of registered churches and Bible study groups which, he trusts, will grow into churches.
Another hero of mine is a school teacher turned pastor, who having seen a Bible for the first time in his life in a market, borrowed the book, took it home and read all night. Returning the Bible the next morning, he inquired as to where he could learn more about this book and this God who sent His son to show us life. He quit his job as a school teacher, took his wife and three kids, and rode across Russia on a train for seven days and nights to a Christian school Guidelines has been involved in. Three years later, having graduated with a certificate in Bible, he came back to his former village and planted a church.
I think, too, of the former dentist who gave up a flourishing practice and comfortable life to take a post graduate degree in Bible, then bring his family from Ukraine to Siberia, to spend the next 17 years in this punishing climate, helping plant a church and give birth to a Bible school and seminary training pastors and Christian leaders.
Wang Ming Dao, a Chinese pastor who was imprisoned by the Communists for 22 years, used to say that the hard path is usually the path God would have us walk. Most of the Russian pastors I know believe that. They are as tough as the winters that freeze Siberia. They just don’t know that things can’t happen, and with God’s help, they make them happen. God give us more made of that tough stuff that doesn’t give up or quit easily.

Колыма - родина нашего страха / Kolyma - Birthplace of Our Fear

he Family of Woolly Mammoths of the Ice Age for sale at an auction in West Sussex.
The skeletons of ancient animals are expected to rise to £ 400,000 at an auction in West Sussex later today. The prehistoric family of four, which were found by builders near Tomsk in Siberia 15 years ago, is composed of an adult man and woman, a young woman of 8 or 9 years, and the infant mammoth. The mammoth baby skeleton is particularly appreciated, with only another known skeleton almost complete of child mammoth in the world.
The small size of the skeletons has led scientists to believe that the animals lived in poor conditions and died 16,000 years ago at the end of the Pleistocene period, a time when glaciers covered large parts of the earth. Most of the mammoths died about 10,000 years ago, with a small population that lasts on the isolated island of Wrangel, off the northern coast of eastern Siberia, until 1650 BC. Other extinct animals on sale at the auction include a 205-million-year-old plesiosaurus, a marine reptile, a cave bear skeleton, and a rare species of large wild cattle called aurochs, an ancestor of our domestic livestock today.

How Mummies Work
“The most familiar mummies, of course, are the carefully wrapped bodies of ancient Egypt. These figures are only one subsection of the world's mummy population, however. In the past 200 years, scientists, adventurers and capitalists have discovered ancient mummies in diverse locales all around the world.”

SUMMARY
=======
Kolyma (Russian: Колыма́, IPA: [kəɫɨˈma]) is a region located in the Russian Far East. It is bounded by the East Siberian Sea and the Arctic Ocean in the north and the Sea of Okhotsk to the south. The region gets its name from the Kolyma River and mountain range, parts of which were not discovered until 1926. Today the region consists roughly of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and the Magadan Oblast.
The area, part of which is within the Arctic Circle, has a subarctic climate with very cold winters lasting up to six months of the year. Permafrost and tundra cover a large part of the region. Average winter temperatures range from −19 °C to −38 °C (even lower in the interior), and average summer temperatures, from +3 °C to +16 °C. There are rich reserves of gold, silver, tin, tungsten, mercury, copper, antimony, coal, oil, and peat. Twenty-nine zones of possible oil and gas accumulation have been identified in the Sea of Okhotsk shelf. Total reserves are estimated at 3.5 billion tons of equivalent fuel, including 1.2 billion tons of oil and 1.5 billion m3 of gas.The principal town Magadan has nearly 100,000 inhabitants and is the largest port in north-eastern Russia. It has a large fishing fleet and remains open year-round thanks to icebreakers. Magadan is served by the nearby Sokol Airport. There are many public and private farming enterprises. Gold mines, pasta and sausage factories, fishing companies, and a distillery form the city's industrial base.
The Mission to Resurrect the Woolly Mammoth

Right now, in the 21st century, South Korean scientists are actually working to resurrect the prehistoric woolly mammoth using cloning technology and the flesh of perfectly preserved specimen once buried in Northern Siberia. The hope is that if they can find an active cell from the meaty leg of a 40,000 year old frozen mammoth, it could hold the keys to bringing back the extinct species.
At the same time, shady tusk hunting Siberians looking for mammoth ivory support the Korean cloning project, by discovering frozen mammoths in the quickly melting permafrost of the Russian Far North. This bizarre supply chain inspired us to travel to Seoul, Yakutsk, and Moscow, to learn about humanity’s quest to both profit from, and clone, the legendary woolly mammoth.

euronews science - Fossil hunters turn up mammoth find
An international team from Russia's North-Eastern Federal University have found the well-preserved remains of a prehistoric woolly mammoth.
They were on a paleontological research trip in the province of Yakutia when they came across samples including fur and bone marrow.
It could take months for the scientists to establish exactly what they have found.
The head of the team believes that chances of finding living cells are pretty remote — but not impossible.
We have hopes that DNA was kept safe, said Semyon Grigoriev.
Scientists already have deciphered much of the woolly mammoth's genetic code from frozen fur balls found in the Siberian permafrost. Some believe it could be possible to recreate the prehistoric animal if living cells are found.
In the Netherlands, the skeleton of a 13-metre long mosasaur has been found, in a limestone quarry near Maastricht. Mosasaurs were marine reptiles that lived at the time of dinosaurs. Then, the area around Maastricht was covered by a shallow tropical sea.
Anne Schulp, a Palaeontologist at Maastricht's Natural History Museum explained: We see all the bones here scattered around and it is not like one complete skeleton. All the bones are over a very wide area and that is because the carcass ended up at the sea floor and then scavenging sharks came in, ripped the carcass apart and we have got the bones and all the little bits and pieces pretty much everywhere. So it is a bit of a jungle.
The findings so far suggest they belonged to the oldest known specimen of the 'Mosasaurus Hoffmanni' group or of a closely related species. The Mosasaur lived approximately 67 million years ago.

Wool Mammoth Find in Russia Flesh Bones & Fur
A Russian boy found a Wooly Mammoth in Russia!
доисторических мамонтов крови
But when one 11-year-old Russian boy decided to explore his local neighborhood, he came across something which hadn't been seen in more than 100 years.
The curious youngster uncovered a nearly intact wooly mammoth - which was discovered complete with flesh, bones, fur and layers of fat.
Scientists looking at a nearly intact mammoth carcass say the woolly beast may have been killed by an ice-age human.
Alexei Tikhonov of the St. Petersburg Zoology Institute told the AP that the mammoth found in Siberia—one of the best preserved carcasses ever found—could have been possibly killed by a human or a rival mammoth.
The discovery was made last month by an 11-year-old Russian boy. While exploring the area around his home, the youngster uncovered a tusk, bones, fur and flesh of a creature that is estimated to be 30,000 years old, the Daily Mail reports.
The boy, Yevgeny Salinder, found the remains in permafrost in Taymyr, located in Russia's northernmost region.
The mammoth is informally named Zhenya, after the boy's nickname. Its official name is the Sopkarginsky mammoth, according to ABC News.
The 16-year-old mammoth was 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighed about 1,100 pounds, Tikhonov told AP. While the mammoth is nearly intact, its DNA is damaged and hardly suitable for cloning.
The last time such a well-preserved mammoth was found in Russia was in 1901.
The discovery of well-preserved woolly mammoth remains in eastern Siberia during 2012 raised distant hopes that the animal could be cloned. A Russian-led team of international scientists found intact cells among remains including hair and bone marrow. In theory, the animal - which died out between 10,000 and 4,000 years ago - could be recreated if living cells are discovered.

The carcass will become an exhibit at the Taymyr Regional Studies Museum in Russia.
