A look at Kazan, Russia's 3rd capital and one of its most multicultural cities
(4 Jun 2018) Russia's third capital is to host four group games, a Round of 16 match and a quarter-final in this year's football World Cup.
Kazan is one of Russia's oldest cities, and, for over 1,000 years, has also been one of its most multicultural.
More than 100 ethnic groups live in the Tatar capital.
The grand Tatar mosque, Qol Sarif, located in the middle of the Kazan Kremlin, is situated right next to an Orthodox Church.
A Jewish synagogue is also nearby, in a neighbouring district.
There is a long-running dispute as to whether Kazan was founded by the Volga Bulgars in the early Middle Ages or by the Mongols of the Golden Horde in the mid-15th century.
However, Finno-Ugric peoples were assimilated by Kipchaks here, then Russians came, and that created the modern Kazan population.
This Khanate (a political entity of Kazan ruled by a Khan) seemed to Ivan the Terrible a little dangerous, although it was friendly towards the Russian Empire, and he found it possible to conquer it (the Khanate of Kazan) to make it easier, said Liya Bushkanets, a professor at the Leo Tolstoy Institute of Philology and Intercultural Communication at Kazan Federal University.
Then Russian troops went to the East. Thus Tatar lines and Russian lines were intermixed here. Plus, there are a lot of folks here, in the Volga region: Chuvash, Mari people are not far from here. Later Jews came here. That's why Kazan turned into a city where an enormous number of nationalities live.
Today, almost a half of Kazan citizens are Tatars, who converse fluently in Russian and Tatar, and observe the Muslim faith.
Many Tatar Muslims grew up with traditional Russian values.
Their creed is often referred to as Euro-Islam as the alternative to religious conservatism and extremism.
Many Tatars are not devout believers, and are secular, as religion in Tatarstan was seriously damaged in Soviet times.
In a small neighbourhood in Kazan's outskirts, an orthodox priest came to talk to an imam, his friend, on a first-name basis.
He later joins Iftar, the evening meal with which Muslims end their daily Ramadan fast at sunset.
Both clergies and their parish help each other to solve the problems of their local community.
There have been no conflicts for the last period of time. Probably, it was in history, let's say. But today we reap the benefits of our ancestors as they managed to create friendly coexistence among religions, Abbyaz Khazrat, the imam of the Tynychlyk mosque, said.
Not only are we not going to kill each other, but, if one needs help with something, we surely are going to come forward. He has parishioners who could help, and I have parishioners who could come to help as well, said Valeriy, the Orthodox priest.
In the city the principle of parity works when the construction of a new mosque implies the onset of an Orthodox church.
Many Jews, whose community in Kazan is one of the largest and most prosperous in the country, say they have almost never faced anti-Semitic sentiments here.
One of the most prestigious schools of Kazan is Jewish: founded 20 years ago in a general education institution, it has been completely reequipped with help from the Jewish diaspora.
Kazan families, including many Tatar Muslims and Russians, want their children to enter the school despite mandatory Hebrew classes, but only one of three applicants gets in.
Recently, Russia's only Museum of Samogon, a Russian moonshine, had opened in Kazan.
The authorities reacted harshly.

Prayers in city considered Russia's centre for Islam
(20 Nov 2018) LEADIN:
Mawlid is being celebrated in the city considered Russia's centre for Islam.
Bolghar has a mosque situated next to a church and a museum housing the world's largest Quran.
STORYLINE:
Prayers at the sacred place for the Muslims of Russia, in the city of Bolghar, are heard continuously throughout the day.
They are joining worshippers around the world in celebrating holiday of Mawlid - the birth of the Prophet Muhammad.
It's generally celebrated on the 12th day of the third month of the Islamic calendar.
The city of Bolghar has a special meaning for Russia's Muslims. It's considered to be the ancient religious capital of Tatarstan and a centre for Islam in Russia.
Bolghar is situated 140 kilometres from Kazan on the banks of the Volga river. It's believed Islam in Russia originally started to spread from this ancient city, which is now the site of an historic museum.
The museum site includes a mosque and a church standing next to each other; as well as mausoleum and a monastery cellar.
Historian Renat Vagapov says many people ask why are the church and mosque are next to one another:
It makes them understand the history of Bolghar. They understand that here is the spiritual centre of Islam for the Ural and Volga regions. This is the place where Islam came through peaceful, missionary ways and in 922 it became the state religion, he says.
But other religions have not been prohibited here, he adds with reference to the proximity of the church to the mosque.
Intensive restoration works have been underway in Bolghar since 2010, with new mosques and hotels being built to attract tourists.
The museum also houses the world's largest printed Quran:
It weighs 500 kilogrammes and is covered with more than a hundred semi-precious stones.
Its size is big - 2 by 1.5 metres - and it is really difficult to turn the pages. Even when we are trying to turn it, five men are helping us, explains Galina Zarifulina, representative of Bolghar state historical and architectural reserve.
The holy book is covered with more than 100 semi-precious stones.

Kazan Travel Guide - A Russian Fantastic Experience
Kazan Travel Guide - A Russian Fantastic Experience
Kazan is the capital of Russia's republic of Tatarstan and the center of the world Tatar culture. With a population of about 1.3 million, a rich history, deep culture and strong economic influence, thus taking the title from Nizhny Novgorod. By many measures, Kazan has one of the highest standards of living in Russia, following after Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Kazan has long been a focal point of higher education in Russia. It remains a university city, with some of Russia's top universities including Kazan Federal University (KFU - formerly Kazan State University, TGGPU and the Kazan Finance Institute), Kazan State Technological University (KGTU), Kazan State Technical University (KAI), and KazanState Power Engineering University. Many foreign students study in Kazan, adding diversity to the city's tolerant.
Kazan peacefully blends Muslim and Christian cultures. There are also many other religions represented in Kazan. For example, in the city center there are synagogue and new catholic church. This vibrant city with over 1000 years of history is an excellent travel destination, and the number of tourists visiting is rapidly increasing every year.
Much of the city center is walkable, and the main attractions for tourists (the Kremlin and Bauman Street) are only for pedestrian traffic. Public buses are abundant and cheap, but one must have some knowledge of Russian to read the signs or ask where the buses are headed. Bus system maps are apparently hard to come by. Taxis are available and operate mostly an on-call service, rather than plying the streets for fares. They also congregate at a few taxi stands in predictable places such as the train station.
Kazan celebrated its 1000-year anniversary in 2005, for which the city got a major facelift. Visitors today will be able to see many of the reconstructed or newly-constructed sites from the anniversary celebration. Kazan offers a lot of various events you can visit during your stay here - international opera and ballet festival, different types of music festivals, popular singers concerts and many other interesting things to do.Cirque du Soleil regurlary brings its shows to Kazan. And a must-see event in Tatarstan is a national holiday Sabantuy - tatar summer festival, which is celebrated in the beginning of June.
Baumana Street has the largest collection of restaurants, cafes, and bars in the city. They range from acceptable to tourist traps. The city has a citadel (Russian: кремль, tr. kreml', or sometimes Tatar: kirman), which was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000. Major monuments in the Kremlin are the five-domed, six-columned Annunciation Cathedral (1561–62) and the mysterious, formerly leaning Söyembikä Tower, named after the last queen of Kazan and regarded as the city's most conspicuous landmark.
Also of interest are the towers and walls, erected in the 16th and 17th centuries but later reconstructed; the Qol-Şarif Mosque, which has been rebuilt inside the citadel; remains of the Saviour Monastery (a 16th-century cathedral demolished by the Bolsheviks) with the Spasskaya Tower; and the Governor's House (1843–53), designed by Konstantin Thon, now the Palace of the President of Tatarstan. Next door, the ornate baroque Sts-Peter-and-Paul's Cathedral on Qawi Nacmi Street and Marcani Mosque on Qayum Nasiri Street date back to the 18th century.

Danghamyeonseo Kazan was taken to the Islamic jonggyogwon the 1552, Ivan the Terrible has a unique form that is propagated after the two Christian religions coexist. Cool Sharif in Kazan observe the war with Ivan the Terrible named after the leader of the Dead Cool Mazar-Islam mosque is the largest mosques throughout Europe and Russia. A Muslim mystery hidden behind the brutal reign of Ivan IV. This place is also reconstructed recently by guessing the past. The Cull Sharif Temple was built in 2005. It took about 10 years to build. This temple has a national, cultural and religious resurrection of the Kazan Tatars. Ivan IV broke into Kazan in 1552 and there was no one Islamic temple for 450 years. The Cull-Sharif-Islamic mosque, with a glimpse of the history of Kazan, where two civilizations clashed, It is a searching place. Most of the people are Russian orthodox believers, especially in Russia. Tiles of geometric motifs are beautifully decorated with colorful Islamic decoration. The gold Arabic script on the ceiling is said to repeat the names of Koran and Allah. What is religion? It is Muslim. Cool Sharif is very good. This temple is more like a festival and a museum. I believe in Russian Orthodox. There is also a Russian Orthodox temple in one place, so I think everyone can live in peace. Here is a temple of all religions near Kazan. This is where the mosque and Russian Orthodox cathedral are located side by side. Two religions and cultures coexist in the Kazan-Kremlin.

MidEast architecture honoured with awards
(16 Sep 2019) LEAD IN:
The winners of the prestigious Aga Khan Awards for Architecture have been announced at a ceremony in the Russian city of Kazan, in the Republic of Tatarstan.
The Aga Khan prizes are given out every three years, and recognise significant construction projects in the Muslim world.
STORY-LINE:
Atop this hill in the West Bank, the zig-zagging form of the Palestinian Museum mimics the agricultural terraces of the countryside that surrounds it.
The graceful building, made from limestone, offers commanding views of the fields around.
The choice of materials used was deliberate: the stone in the exterior cladding and in the pavements was quarried near Bethlehem.
The source of the material is a statement by the architects about the Palestinian people's connection to the land.
And now, their design is being recognised on the world stage.
It's one of six projects to receive the 2019 Aga Khan Award for Architecture at this ceremony in Kazan, in the Republic of Tatarstan in Russia.
Zina Jardaneh, the Chair of the Board of The Palestinian Museum, accepts the award from the Aga Khan, helped by the President of Tatarstan.
Birzeit University is next door to the museum and the students always take part in all the activities that the museum offers, whether they be cultural or entertainment activities, or something else, Jardaneh says, explaining the importance of the Palestinian Museum to the local community.
In Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, this wetland is a place of peace.
But it wasn't always like this here: it was once a dumping ground for builders' rubble.
The project to rehabilitate this land was undertaken by a team from architecture firm X-architects, and by Sharjah's Environment and Protected Areas Authority.
And the wetland centre is already drawing back flamingos.
The Wasit Wetland Centre is the first of its kind in the Arab world, explains Aisha Al Midfa, the Centre's Manager.
We attract visitors from around the world. This has helped us develop the educational content of the centre in several languages in the visitor viewing area.
The wetland project is not the only Gulf States entry to be commended in the awards this year: Bahrain's ambitious restoration of a historic pearling town is another winner.
The town of Muharraq was once the world's pearling capital, but since the discovery of oil in Bahrain, it had fallen into disrepair.
An ambitious project by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities has started to reverse the decay.
The judges were impressed by the authority's work.
The authority's president, Sheikha Mai Bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, receives their commendation.
This project successfully updates the infrastructure for citizens living on this island and also encourages the new generation to return to their original homes, she explains.
I am always saddened to abandon our old places, to abandon our homes and to embark on modern cities that do not belong to us and do not belong to them and do not express our personality. Return to the old places, revive them, use them.
And it's that ambition that this year's Aga Khan Awards judging panel hopes will inspire other places too.
Sheikha Mai Bint Mohammed Al Khalifa stresses Bahrain's restoration project is not over yet.
The Aga Khan Awards for Architecture are awarded every three years, and recognise architecture that addresses the needs and aspirations of societies across the world in which Muslims have a significant presence, according to its official website.

Documentary Crimean Muslim - living in peace in Russia 2015
A PEACEFUL AND WONDERFUL CRIMEAN PENINSULA
We went to the Crimean Peninsular in mid 2015, a year after the people of Crimea decided to be part of the Russian Federation. We went to see the real situation of the multi-ethnic and multi-religion society of Crimea.
We saw the Muslim community is living happily in Crimea. The new administrations (Local and Federal governments) are giving equal supports to the Muslim community in Crimea (same to all other communities), recognizing Crimean Tatar (and Muslim community) as important segment within the Crimean Peninsular society.
The new government started the program to protect and preserve all the Muslim historical monuments and manuscripts together with other ethnics' historical items.
Everything is fine in Crimea, 1 year after the Peninsular became part of the Russian Federation. We saw that Crimea will continue to prosper without conflict, people are moving forward and all people see themselves as one united society.
