Kroměříž (Czech Republic) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Kromeriz in the Czech Republic.
The tranquil town of Kromĕříž in the southeast of today’s Czech Republic is a milestone of nineteenth century Habsburgian history. Kromĕříž Castle was the traditional summer residence of the bishops of Olomouc and became a key influence in the town’s cultural life. Typical statues and Baroque and Rococo figures adorn both the walls and niches of the arcades of the castle’s well-tended courtyard. An impressive staircase decorated with large figures leads to the second floor and the Picture Gallery which contains the Apollon And Marsyas by Tizian, one of the great masters of Venetian Renaissance. The Reichstag Hall is the castle’s largest room and is where the history of the nineteenth century comes to life. During the turmoil of the Bourgeois Revolution of 1848, Emperor Ferdinand The First fled from Vienna to Olomouc and the Austrian Reichstag met there and it was also where the first democratic constitution in Europe was discussed and the idea of All State power emanates from the people! Since 1998 the castle and its park and flower garden have been designated as a World Cultural Heritage Site. Kromĕříž Castle and gardens are among the most well preserved Baroque examples of a royal residence. Although architecturally in the Viennese style of the K & K monarchy they are notable as a fascinating symbol of democracy

Gardens and Castle at Kroměříž (UNESCO/NHK)
Kroměříž stands on the site of an earlier ford across the River Morava, at the foot of the Chriby mountain range which dominates the central part of Moravia. The gardens and castle of Kroměříž are an exceptionally complete and well-preserved example of a European Baroque princely residence and its gardens.

[EN] We visited Rožnov pod Radhoštěm located about 60 km south of the Polish-Czech border. On the side of this town there is a very interesting and exceptionally vast open air museum called in Czech language Valašské muzeum v přírodě, devoted to the Wallach (Vlach) culture. Wallachs (Vlachs) were a pastoral people from Romania (from southern Carpathians) who, in search of places for pasturing their animals, and forced by the political situation (Turks occupying the Balkans) moved north and reached Moravia where they settled and they had their own, distinct culture.

Štramberk, Czechy - Pomysł na udany Weekend z dziećmi
Štramberk to malownicza średniowieczna osada położona na Morawach w Czechach. To idealne miejsce by miło spędzić cały dzień na spacerowaniu z dziećmi pośród drewnianych chat i malutkich kamienic. Štramberk słynie nie tylko z średniowiecznego układu urbanistycznego ale również z słodkiego przysmaku - Štramberské uši.

Scenes from the Prague Castle South Gardens (Jižní zahrady), Czech Republic
Occupying the long, narrow band of land below the Castle, South Gardens are quite small gardens linked together: the Paradise Garden (Rajská zahrada) with a circular pavilion, the 19th-century Garden on the Ramparts (Zahrada Na valech) has two obelisks, and the Hartig Garden has a Baroque music pavilion and beautiful statues.
The Paradise Garden dates back to the first half of the 16th century. Their current appearance was designed by architect Plečnik in the 1920s, along with the On the Ramparts Garden, which originally should have been a natural park. Hartig Garden with the Music Pavilion was added in the 1960s. The gardens provide a breathtaking panoramatic view of Lesser Town, Old Town and nearby Petřín Hill.

Kolín - Central Bohemia - Explore Czech Republic with Nick Forrow
Kolín is a town in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic, 55 kilometres east from Prague, lying on the Labe (Elbe) River. Rich archaeological discoveries from the town and its surroundings show that this place was settled long before it is stated in extant written records.
In the regional museum we can find numerous relics commemorating all known settlements in Bohemia. There used to be ancient crossroads of three important trading roads formed as early as in the Roman Empire. The presence of Slavs can be proved even in the 6th century BC. A lot of discoveries of fortified places and burying-places are the evidence of dense population in this area in 9th and 12th centuries. The first written parchment mentioning Kolín dates back to 8th September 1261. In 1437 Bedřich of Strážnice built a caste on the site of a ruined monastery, the castle was afterwards rebuilt into a chateau. Many privileges awarded by Charles IV and Wenceslas IV supported the town development and wealth. At that time, Kolín belonged to the most prosperous towns of the Bohemian kingdom. The biggest humiliation and poverty came during the Thirty-year War which almost ruined the town.
Kolín (in German: Kolin, also Köln an der Elbe) is a regional town in the east of Central-Bohemia, situated on the river Labe. Kolín has more than 30 000 inhabitants, the area of the town is 35 km², the average altitude 220m. The town is an important rail junction. The main industry comprises chemical, car, engineering, food-processing and polygraphic branches.
The name Kolín probably comes from an old-bohemian word kolitiʺ, which means to drive stakes. The name is connected with the location of Starý Kolín in a frequently flooded area on the junction of the Klejnarka and Labe. People used to fix the ground using wooden stakes. Afterwards a more suitable location was chosen for the developing trading settlement. The new location was on an elevated place, 7 km westwards. The new village (and later on the royal town) kept the name of the original settlement.
There are also other less likely explanations of the name origin. The name could be also derived from its location on an elevated place, a hill - colinus in Latin, which is in disagreement with the existence of Starý Kolín, though. According to another theory, the Latin word Colonia is connected with the arrival of German colonists to Bohemia.
