It is the country’s political, cultural, economic, and academic center. Skopje is known as the City of Statues thanks to its impressive monuments situated all over the city.
In the center of town is the Macedonia Square, the biggest public space in Macedonia.
In its middle stands the Warrior on a Horse, a fountain and a statue of Alexander the Great.
The symbol of the city the Stone Bridge connects Macedonia Square to the Old Bazaar.

Bless the Macedonians
The Ilinden Macedonian National Uprising was the Macedonian peoples' conclusion to a long struggle for freedom from the oppressive Ottoman Empire and for the creation of a free and independent Macedonian state. The Macedonian peoples' hopes and aspirations unfortunately were not only dashed, when the Ottomans violently crushed the Uprising, but their hopes for liberty in the future were also destroyed as a Macedonian defeat signaled to Macedonia's neighbours that Macedonia was now ripe for the picking.
Despair and helplessness overcame the Macedonian population as it lost its strength to struggle not only against the Ottomans but also against foreign influence and alien propaganda. Disappointed in their leadership's ability to lead them to liberty and under the influence of neighbouring propaganda, Macedonians began to believe that the only way they could liberate themselves was if Bulgaria , Serbia , or Greece helped them. The hopes of the majority were pinned mostly on Bulgaria because its propaganda, delivered by the Exarchate Church and the Vrhovists (Bulgarian supremacists), was very convincing. Bulgarian propaganda was so strong that Macedonians began to trust Sofia to become their liberator.
In terms of numbers, just before the First Balkan War broke out, there were 2,360,000 people living within Macedonia 's ethnic and geographical borders in an area encompassing 67,741.2 square kilometers.
Of the total population living in Macedonia, 52.4 percent, or 1,182,000 people were Christian Macedonians, 22 percent, or 500,000 were Ottomans, 10 percent, or 230,000 were Greeks, 5.7 percent, or 123,000 were Albanians, 3.6 percent, or 80,000 were Vlachs, 3 percent, or 70,000 were Jews, and 2.4 percent, or 54,000 were Roma (Gypsies). Ottomans lived mainly in the Vardar River valley and on the Aegean Coast . Greeks lived on the southern fringe of Macedonia and Jews lived mostly in Solun. In 1912 Solun had a population of 125,000 people, 60,000 of whom were Jews, 25,000 were Ottomans, 14,000 were Macedonians and 14,000 were Greeks. (Vanche Stojchev. Military History of Macedonia . MACEDONIAN STRUGGLE 1904-1908, THIRST FOR FREEDOM PART 2

The Macedonian Struggle 1904 - 1908
The Macedonian Struggle 1904 - 1908
The Macedonian struggle was not exactly a war. It was a strange kind of struggle between Greeks and Bulgarians that took place in the Ottoman Empire. During this struggle there was no official declaration of war until 1913. The historical, political, cultural and geographical characteristics of the region are instrumental in understanding the facts that led to this war.
The Macedonian struggle was a result of two other wars. The Russo-Turkish war (1877-1878) that was the cause of the expansionist policy of the Bulgarians and the Greco-Turkish war in 1897 where the Greeks were defeated.
It is often said that this struggle started after the arrival of the Young Turks in 1094 and ended in 1908. In fact it had two different periods: 1897-1904 when the Bulgarians kept terrorizing the Greeks and 1904-1908 when the Greeks decided to react. It actually ended in 1912.
In September of 1900 the comitadjis shot captain Kotta in the context of executing the Slavophone Greeks that blocked their plans. In 1912, just before the Balkan Wars, Lazos Dougiamas and Athanasios Betzios were murdered also by Bulgarians.
Macedonia was not yet a part of Greece despite its important role during the Greek War of Independence in 1821 and its constant struggles for freedom after the year 1830. Its western boundaries were formed by Pindus-Grammos-Prespes-Achrida, its eastern by Nestos and Rhodope, its southern by the Aegean Sea and Mount Athos and its northern by Skardos-Mount Rilas.
During the Turkish domination it was divided in three problematic vilayets, those of Monastiri, Thessaloniki and Skopia where the Turks had send about 200.000 soldiers. Monastiri was the seat of the 3rd Army Corps with 10.000 soldiers and 100 cannons. In the decade of 1860 the first Greco-Bulgarian conflict took place. The reason was that the Ottomans allowed the creation of the Bulgarian Exarchate in order to give an impulse to the independence of the Bulgarian church. But the Bulgarians used this fact to forward their expansionist policy in Macedonia and Thrace. A part of this policy was also the incorporation of eastern Rumelia despite its many Greek inhabitants. The Supreme Macedonian Committee was created in Sofia in 1895.
In 1900 the Bulgarians took action by finding supporters and secret agents as well as by creating a powerful army. They also created a committee in every village. There was a leader (Natsalnik), a treasurer, an emissary and a kind of public court of law. Furthermore, armed groups (Militsia) were set up in every village and helped the regular army.
Each of these armed groups had its leader, the voivod. The soldiers were carrying rifles, revolvers, 200 bullets, grenades and knives. Their regimentals were simple and of waterproof fabric. They wore rustic shoes (tsarouhia) and thick socks that reached up to their knees. They also wore capes of wool and caps on their heads. Their mission was to organize the struggle as well as to terrorize and punish those who reacted.
These groups of comitadjis started persecutions against the Greeks, the Slavs and the Vlachs of Macedonia. Their victims were mostly priests, teachers, scientists and other wealthy citizens. Their goal was to convert the inhabitants to the Bulgarian Exarchate and finally to occupy Macedonia.

Revolutionary activity in Macedonia
Revolutionary activity in Macedonia .
Map1: 00:09 Map showing the battles of the Greek War of Independence in Macedonia, 1821-1822.
Letter: 00:44 Letter of Alexander Ypsilantis to Emmanouel Pappas, dated 8 October 1820.
Map2: 03:40 The movements of Greek and Turkish forces during the insurrection in Chalcidice (1821) and on Olympus and Vérmion (1822).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The economic ascent of Thessaloniki and of the other urban centres of Macedonia coincided with the cultural and political renaissance of the Greeks. The ideals and patriotic songs of Rigas Feraios and others had made a profound impression upon the Thessalonians. Α few years later, the revolutionary fervour of the southern Greeks was to spread to these parts, and the seeds of Filiki Eteria were speedily to take root. The leader and coordinator of the revolution in Macedonia was Emmanouel Pappas from the village of Dobista, Serres, who was initiated into the Filiki Eteria in 1819. Papas had considerable influence over the local Ottoman authorities, especially the local governor, Ismail Bey, and offered much of his personal wealth for the cause.
Following the instructions of Alexander Ypsilantis, that is to prepare the ground and to rouse the inhabitants of Macedonia to rebellion, Papas loaded arms and munitions from Constantinople on a ship on 23 March and proceeded to Mount Athos, considering that this would be the most suitable spring-board for starting the insurrection. As Vacalopoulos notes, however, adequate preparations for rebellion had not been made, nor were revolutionary ideals to be reconciled with the ideological world of the monks within the Athonite regime. On 8 May, the Turks, infuriated by the landing of sailors from Psara at Tsayezi, by the capture of Turkish merchants and the seizure of their goods, rampaged through the streets of Serres, searched the houses of the notables for arms, imprisoned the Metropolitan and 150 merchants, and seized their goods as a reprisal for the plundering by the Psarians.
In Thessaloniki, governor Yusuf Bey (the son of Ismail Bey) imprisoned in his headquarters more than 400 hostages, of whom more than 100 were monks from the monastic estates. He also wished to seize the powerful notables of Polygyros, who got wind of his intentions and fled. On 17 May, the Greeks of Polygyros took up arms, killed the local governor and 14 of his men, and wounded three others; they also repulsed two Turkish detachments. On 18 May, when Yusuf learned of the incidents at Polygyros and the spreading of the insurrection to the villages of Chalkidiki, he ordered half of his hostages to be slaughtered before his eyes. The Mulla of Thessalonica, Hayrıülah, gives the following description of Yusuf's retaliations:
Every day and every night you hear nothing in the streets of Thessaloniki but shouting and moaning. It seems that Yusuf Bey, the Yeniceri Agasi, the Subaşı, the hocas and the ulemas have all gone raving mad.
The Creation of The Holocaust Memorial Museum in N. Macedonia
In March 2019, Skopje, the capital of Macedonia gained a new cultural artifact – the Holocaust Memorial Center for the Jews of Macedonia. A landmark situated in the newly renovated historic quarter of the capital Skopje adjacent to the Supreme Court and major National Museums, the center commemorates the 7144 Macedonian Jews brutally deported by occupying Bulgarian forces and murdered by the Nazis at the Treblinka killing center. But the Museum is more than a Holocaust Museum, it is a Jewish history Museum, tasked with telling the story of Macedonian Jewry from its presence in antiquity – the presence of Jews in Macedonia precedes the Christian era — encompasses Talmudic reference of Alexander of Macedonia, the Spanish Inquisition, the Ottoman Empire, the Yugoslav Republic, Ladino and Sephardic culture to the present day. Phase I of the project consisted of the installation of major elements of the building including the 4 story Memorial, the Commemoration Area, the Orientation Theater and a two floor temporary historical exhibit.
After winning the first place award for interior design Macedonian Biennial of architecture, works began on the permanent exhibition which opened to the public on March 11, 2019.

In this episode, David takes us around Macedonia to show us what to see and do in Bitola.
The city of Bitola is a mix of ancient and modern traditions. It is small enough to easily explore by foot, and will give you the opportunity to get very familiar Macedonian culture. Heraclea Lyncestis is an ancient site just 2 kilometers from Bitola. It is known for its Greek and Roman architecture, especially its colorful mosaic floors, which are exceptional examples of early Christian art. Don’t forget to admire the amphitheater during your visit to the site.
Magnolia Square is the main square of Bitola. There are several landmarks surrounding the square: Mosque, the Clock Tower, statue of Phillip II of Macedon (in the center of the square) and the beginning of Sirok Sokak, the main pedestrian boulevard of the city.
While exploring around Bitola, you have to stroll through the Old Bazaar. This is one of the city’s most important cultural and social meeting points. Stop at the fruit and vegetable market of the Old Bazaar. It’s really quite colorful and lively. See what produce is in season when you go!
The Old Bazaar is a place to get daily errands done and a great opportunity to purchase souvenirs. Next up on David’s tour is the Museum of Bitola, which holds ancient artifacts and memorabilia from the Balkan struggle for independence. The museum itself used to be a military academy. There are several exhibits and halls dedicated to the academy's most famous student - Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, also known as the first president of Turkey and “Father of the Turks”.
Sirok Sokak Street is the perfect place to get a coffee and people watch. It’s a Must-Do when in Bitola. If you don’t, it’s like you were never here.
Right outside the city (5-minute drive) is the village of Dihovo, which is a great place to visit on a day trip. Villa Dihovo is a unique experience for all who visit. If you choose to come here to dine, you’ll enjoy a pleasant array of Macedonian specialties and refreshing salads made from vegetable grown on the property. Villa Dihovo is also a bed and breakfast. The only thing with a fixed price here is the alcohol, which is definitely something you don’t see every day.
David also visited a bee farm in Dihovo and was able to try the honey straight out of the comb. The bee farm also sells honey in jars, which is a great gift to take back home with you. Give yourself an extra day in Bitola so you want to enjoy the flora and fauna of nearby Pelister National Park. Hiking is the most popular activity here.
So if you’re ready to dive into Macedonian history and cuisine, consider stopping in Bitola for a few days to take in its rich culture and friendly people.
