Museum of Marble Crafts - Pyrgos
The hasty visitor of Tinos does not easily realize that the island, and especially Exo Meria, an area with a soil rich in white, grey and green marble and with a lot of quarries, has been the most important neo-Hellenic center of the art of marble sculpture.
Yet, the expert eye of those who have the time to visit the area or at least the greatest village of the island, Pyrgos, they will discover the intense presence and the use of the marble. The architecture in houses, churches, streets and the simple or elaborate sculptured decorations in tools and utensils of the everyday life remind the visitor that the marble has a special place in the architecture and the art in Greece from the ancient times till today.
In this island, which fairly enough is called «an outdoor museum of marble sculpture», and especially in this village, where the art of marble is still alive, the Cultural Foundation of the Piraeus Company, has founded the sixth in line thematic technological museum of its network, inaugurated in 2008.
For many visitors, the essential exploration of the island starts after visiting the Museum. The increasing number of visitors of the Museum, appr.25.000 persons in 2013, is another success as well. The response of the public is not only the result of the attractive combination of image and content of the permanent exhibition, its rich collection of original items, the high quality of services provided, the targeted promotion, the support of the island’s society or the extended cooperation with local authorities like the City of Tinos or the Cultural Center of Panormos.

Pyrgos
The cradle of sculpture and painting, the homeland of Chalepas, Nikiforos Lytras and Giannis Gaitis. If you walk in the centric pebble road (Giannoulis Chalepas Str.), you will immediately realize why this marble village is considered one of the most beautiful settlements in Cyclades. Blazons, portosies, doorsteps, fountains, inscriptions, busts, alleys, carved tables, everything is made of marble sculptured with great prowess by the local sculptors.
The walk goes on to the centric, marble paved square (of the Heroes of 1821) with the shady plane, the monumental fountains and the coffee-pastry shops where Alexandra's galaktompoureko (custard filled pastry) gives a sweet battle with melachrino.
A visit to Tinian Artists' museum is a must, and also to the newly founded Museum of Marble Crafts of the Cultural Foundation of Piraeus Association which demonstrates the course of the mineral from the mining to its final shape. Since 1956, right next to the modern building, there is the School of Fine Arts of Panormos.

A highly accurate 3D digital reconstruction with animation of the marble cutting machine, used during the pre-industrial and proto-industrial era, in the area of Vathi on the island of Tinos in Greece, for the Museum of Marble Crafts. This historical, sophisticated, and complex marble cutting machinery used to form a central part of the marble mining process in the 1920's but does not exist anymore. However, parts of it have been physically restored and can be seen at the Museum. The film includes realistic sound, which has been digitally generated and processed.

Enchanting yet still unknown to the majority of tourists, this Cycladic island mostly attracts Greek pilgrims travelling there twice a year, on March 25 and August 15, to visit the church of Panagia Megalochari (the Blessed Virgin Mary). From all over the country, people come here to fulfill their vows and to seek comfort. Tinos is the most important Orthodox centre of worship in Greece but, in the same time, an important Catholic centre too; this so rare in Greece mix of religious traditions gives to the island a particular character.
But a pilgrimage is not the only reason for getting to know the amazing island of Tinos, with the beautiful beaches and the 40 traditional villages, or, according to the philosopher Kastoriadis, the “hand-made Tínos”.This island is the homeland of renowned great artists of marble carving such as Gyzis, Lytras, Chalepas, Filippotis and Sochos, who have been the last famous names to have held the baton of the island’s marble-carving tradition. According to the legend, the famous sculptor of the ancient times, Fidias, had taught the secrets of his art to the locals. Their admirable craft is displayed in chapels, fountains, arches and pigeon lofts. In the village of Pýrgos the Marble Art Museum is worth a visit as much as the Gallery of Tinian Artists right next to the church of Virgin Mary.
Tinos is a very interesting place to visit. One can enjoy its unspoiled architecture, its picturesque villages, its beautiful beaches and its traditional culture and way of living that has been going on through the years.
The pan-hellenic festivities in honour of Virgin Mary on August 15 are accompanied by other festivals like those in Tsikniás and Exómbourgo and the gastronomic feasts involving artichoke and raki in Falatádos as well as the festival of honey in Kámpos. Tinos is the ideal place for nature lovers, architecture, art and tradition, and the perfect answer to the relative expectations.

SUMMARY
=======
Chios (; Greek: Χίος, Khíos, Greek pronunciation: [ˈçi.os]) is the fifth largest of the Greek islands, situated in the Aegean Sea, 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) off the Anatolian coast. The island is separated from Turkey by the Chios Strait. Chios is notable for its exports of mastic gum and its nickname is the Mastic Island. Tourist attractions include its medieval villages and the 11th-century monastery of Nea Moni, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Administratively, the island forms a separate municipality within the Chios regional unit, which is part of the North Aegean region. The principal town of the island and seat of the municipality is Chios. Locals refer to Chios town as Chora (Χώρα literally means land or country, but usually refers to the capital or a settlement at the highest point of a Greek island).
It was also the site of the Chios massacre in which tens of thousands of Greeks on the island were killed by Ottoman troops during the Greek War of Independence in 1822.
