Mérida – Welcome to the capital of the Mexican state of Yucatan. While much of the peninsula is famed for its resorts, Mérida is the epicentre of Yucatan culture, history and pride.
When ready, browse vacation packages to Mérida:
The peaceful paradise, #Mérida, features a blend of colonial houses and Mayan ruins between which the city shares its heritage. Begin your #vacation at Plaza Grande and #explore the surrounding pastel streets filled with architectural treasures and cool parks.
Mérida’s many museums cover everything from Yucatan song to the folk arts of Mexico. The Museum of The City of Mérida charts the rich and sometimes turbulent history of Yucatan’s capital. #Visit the Yucatan’s Anthropology and History Museum and nearby, the Great Museum of the Mayan World which creates a striking contrast to Mérida’s historic streetscapes.
Mérida is surrounded by ancient Mayan cities such as Dzibilchaltun, Mayapan, Uxmal, and Chichén Itza. The Yucatan Peninsula has an incredible network of over 6000 cenotes. Some, such as the Sacred Cenote of Chichén Itza, were considered portals to the afterlife.
Mérida is undoubtedly one of the coolest and most cultural cities in Mexico.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

Сенот (пещера) Hubiku: глубина 40 м, температура воды 20 градусов С.
Discover the adventure trip to Cenote Hubiku. The depth of 40 m, the water temperature is 20 degrees C.
Did you know that the Yucatan Peninsula keeps one of nature’s creations, which for the Maya culture meant a lot more than what one can only see with bare eyes? We are talking about cenotes, these deep water formations originated from underground water rivers producing limestone erosion giving birth to this round-like water bodies.
For the ancient Maya culture, cenotes were the primordial source of life and water, reason and heart of their settlements; they were also a space for performing special rituals for the deities of rain, death, rebirth and fertility. Cenotes were symbolic gateways between earth and the underworld, and that is why it is also related to the spiritual world which is called by the Mayas as Xibalbá. Above all this, cenotes were also considered to be related to fertility and associated with the idea that life was incepted in them, places where pure water was contained.
In Mexico you can find over 2500 cenotes and most of them can be found at Yucatan Peninsula; that is exactly the case of Hubiku, located in the town of Temozón, approximately 10 km away of the Pueblo Mágico Valladolid, it is a semi-open cenote shaped almost as a perfect circle where you can become one with this natural jewel.
Jump in the luminous turquoise waters that will certainly freshen you up, admire the glare of the sun lighting up the water surface and creating such magical effects, surrounded by antique vegetation in this sacred place that was once occupied by the Maya culture… It’s such an amazing feeling you would have to experience for yourself.
Besides this incredible experience at Hubiku you can find Mayan village, Casa Tequila, Museo Don Tadeo, a charming tequila and mezcal museum where you can taste the essence of Mexico, original or flavored versions of this traditional beverage from Mexico.

You will start the day off by visiting a secluded Mayan village located amongst natural lagoons, cenotes, and jungle. Here you will rappel down these beautiful cenotes and soar across the jungle canopy via zip lines. Afterwards you will be able to enjoy swimming in hidden caves and walking through the jungle with a professional guide who will teach you about the natural fauna. Mayan Historic site of Uxmal Yucatan Mexico
These sites together with other historical sites teach us that the people who were living before us were keeping the balance of the universe without it been damaged.
The city's dates of occupation are unknown and the estimated population (about 15,000 people) is a rough guess.
Most of the city's major construction took place while Uxmal was the capital of a Late Classic Maya state around 850-925 AD.
After about 1000 AD, Toltec invaders took over, and most building ceased by 1100 AD

Chichen Itza - Mayan City in Yucatan, Mexico
Short video capturing Chichen Itza with its archeological wonders. This old Mayan city was built between 600 AD to 1200 AD.
An estimated 1.2 million tourists visit the ruins every year and it is the second-most visited of Mexico's archaeological sites (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Chichen-Itza, now including one of the new 7 wonders of the world; the Kukulkan Pyramid, is located in the Peninsula of Yucatan, in the Yucatan State; Mexico, between Valladolid and Merida and is just 120 km from Merida.
Unfortunately it is no longer possible to climb the pyramid for safety and protection reasons.

Mayan Kitchen Found in Mexico
Over 1000-year-old Mayan kitchen found in Mexico
Archaeologists in Mexico uncovered an ancient Mayan kitchen in the Yucatan Peninsula that officials believe could be more than 12-hundred years old. The 8th century kitchen contained thousands of utensils used to prepare dishes for the mysterious civilization's ruling elite. Let's find out more.
Palenque Maya Ruins - Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula
Palenque was a Maya city state in southern Mexico that flourished in the 7th century. The Palenque ruins date from ca. 226 B.C. to ca. 799 A.D. After its decline, it was absorbed into the jungle of cedar, mahogany, and sapodilla trees, but has since been excavated and restored and is now a famous archaeological site attracting thousands of visitors each year.
Palenque is a medium-sized site, but it contains some of the finest architecture, sculpture, roof comb and bas-relief carvings that the Maya produced. Much of the history of Palenque has been reconstructed from reading the hieroglyphic inscriptions on the many monuments; historians now have a long sequence of the ruling dynasty of Palenque in the 5th century and extensive knowledge of the city-state's rivalry with other states such as Calakmul and Toniná. The most famous ruler of Palenque was K'inich Janaab Pakal, or Pacal the Great, whose tomb has been found and excavated in the Temple of the Inscriptions.
By 2005, the discovered area covered up to 1 square mile, but it is estimated that less than 10% of the total area of the city is explored, leaving more than a thousand structures still covered by jungle.
Pyramid at Chichén Itzá: Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
It was rewarding to learn that the El Castillo has 91 steps on each side plus the final step at the top leading to the temple, giving 365 – the number of days in the solar year.
This was only one of the engrossing dimensions of this wonderfully vast site. The availability of water was a constant concern for ancient peoples. The Sacred Cenote was taken as a sign to establish the ancient city. Sacrifices were conducted here in times of water scarcity.
El Castillo is arguably the highlight. Worship of serpents, including in the guise of the Plumed Serpent was a feature of life. On one of the corners, it was just possible to imagine a wriggling serpent descending, culminating in the dramatic jaws. This effect is best seen at certain times of the year.
The Great Ball Court was fascinating. Exceptional acoustics can be heard. The large rings high on the walls reflect what skilled games were played. It seems that the conclusion of a game may have had unexpected consequences, such as the winning captain offering his head to the loser.
The walkway of the 1000 columns (misnamed as there are less than 1000) is a fine sight, stretching into the distance. It is uncertain what uses the area had or even how much of it had a roof.
