Considered a cultural center for the Mon people, this pottery museum is notable for its large collection of the distinctive ancient Mon design ceramics. Mon people have been known for their artistic pottery skills since their settlement in the delta of Irawaddy River. Later, during the time of major Mon migrations to Thailand during the Thonburi era, Mon pottery became Nonthaburi’s oldest handicraft and also its iconic symbol, decorated with unique beautiful Mon designs.

Nonthaburi
Nonthaburi, located on the bank of the Chao Phraya River, is very rich in natural resources making people migrated to the community for more than 400 years. In the Ayutthaya Era, Nonthaburi was located on at Ban Talat Khwan, which was a renowned orchard in that time. Later on, during the reign of King Rama V the Great of Rattanakosin Kingdom built the European- style city hall, which is very beautiful an important landmark of Nonthaburi to these days. Nonthaburi’s tourist destinations include cultural, traditional sites and the riverside lifestyle, waiting for you to experience.

Nonthaburi is one of the largest city in Thailand which just 20km from heart of Bangkok. Choices of public transport such as MRT, boat, bus make this province quite easy to visit.

KOH KRET- Nonthaburi [Thailand Travel]
There is much history and culture concentrated in this tiny island, based in Nonthaburi, which reached its heyday during the Ayutthaya period. The island is manmade, created from a canal dug between two curves in the Chao Phraya River. Its temples have luckily retained the Ayutthaya era style. Most of the residents are descendants of the minority Mon hill tribe people, who had been given permission to emigrate and live there during the reign of King Taksin after the sacking of Ayutthaya. Another wave of Mon migrants came during King Rama II’s rule. The best way to get around the small island is by bicycle or motorbike.
Attractions include many unique Mon sights not found in the rest of Thailand, such as WatPoramaiYikawat, an ancient temple. The temple is the last in Thailand to have preserved Buddhist prayers in the Mon language. Inside the temple compound is a small, five-tiered roof castle, once home to the coffin of a former temple abbot. WatPoramaiYikawat Museum displays interesting artifacts such as votive tablets, crystal ware and “Hem”, including a masterpiece made by ColonelChatwatNgamniyom.

Walking in Bangkok, Thailand - Nonthaburi Province Market Series - Part 1
The long history of Nonthaburi dated back 400 years to the era of Ayutthaya Kingdom. Firstly known as Tambon Ban Talad Khwan and noted for its fertile soil and plentiful water where a lot of orchards nest along side the Chao Phraya River, this tambon has been promoted to Nonthaburi City in 1549 under the reign of King Mahajakrapat.
In 1665, King Narai the Great had noticed that the river has changed its own route and it might consequently have a negative effect to the city’s security. Hence, the fortifications have been established at the delta of Om River where the city pillar has been built as the symbol of the new foundation of Nonthaburi.
At the time of Rattanakosin Kingdom, King Mongkut has had Nonthaburi moved to the entrance of Bang Sue Canal in Tambon Ban Talad Khwan where later in the reign of King Chulalongkorn, the city hall has been founded and lasted till 1928. In the same year, King Pokklao has initiated the idea of building a new city hall at Rajawitthayalai Ban Bang Khwan, Tambon Bang Tanowsri on Pracharaj I road along side the Chao Phraya River which nowadays belongs to the Ministry of Interior Affairs. The building, constructed in a European style, has become one of the ancient remains of Thailand while the current city hall is situated on Rattanathibet Road.
