Tsaxis Fort Rupert
Dr. George MacDonald, and wife Joanne MacDonald have assembled a vast array of Northwest Coast visual resources over their careers. Since the establishment of the Bill Reid Centre in 2008, the MacDonalds have been generously transferring this research archive to Simon Fraser University.
This presentation on the Kwakwaka'wakw village of Tsaxis (Fort Rupert) is an exploration by Dr. MacDonald of this particular village file. The presentation is intended to be a point of departure to stimulate conversation, further community and academic analysis, and increase the level of access to the vast array of information collected by Europeans and Euro-Americans on Coastal First People during the 19th and 20th Centuries.
This presentation was recorded using Skype, and although we have made efforts to edit it for quality purposes, there may be small audio and visual irregularities.

Almost Gone - Remains of Cannery Villages of BC (Excerpts)
Almost Gone, Remains of Cannery Villages is a multi-media collage of photographs, video sequences, interviews and soundtrack. This 26-minute production evokes the essence of abandonment of the canning industry on the central and northern BC coasts, where the remains of buildings and people's memories echo the experiences of long-gone communities. It expresses the disheartenment of finding so little evidence of an important era of BC history.
In 2003, Florence Debeugny travelled part of the BC central coast to photograph past cannery villages such as Bella Coola, Namu, Butedale, Bella Bella and Tallheo.
In 2004, she spent two weeks at the North Pacific Museum, a former cannery village close to Prince Rupert, photographing remains of surrounding cannery villages such as Inverness, Cassiar and Port Essington.
