The proud successor of the local humor and of carnival traditions, the House today is a major center that reconciles the features of a museum and a popular gallery where the celebrated Gabrovo jokes have been showcased. However, this is place is much more, as it presents exemplary works of contemporary humorous and satirical works from across the globe. Its team has been collecting humor and satire pieces in the genres of cartoon, photography, paintings and sculpture from all parts of the globe. It organizes international events and encourages young and reputed authors to create humorous works; releases albums and catalogues with visual and verbal humor. The hosts at this house trust in the motto, The world has survived, because it has laughed.
NONUMENT on Buzludzha Peak, trailer, English audio
14 Sept 2019
Towards it end, the 24. Gabrovo Biennial presents Nonument – an exhibition at the Museum of Humour and Satire in Gabrovo, Bulgaria and a performance piece by LIGNA group (Germany), Stephan A. Shtereff and music by Emiliyan Gatsov – Elbi, which took place in front of the Buzludzha Monument (Buzludzha Peak, Balkan Mountain).
Nonuments are monuments that have transformed or lost their symbolic value due to changes in ideology. Erected as sites of glorification and remembrance nonuments are neglected, forgotten and left to the elements, reminders of unattained utopias, coercion and complicity. Presenting examples from Central and Eastern Europe from the Nonument.org platform, the show highlights the Buzludzha monument, built as a house of the Bulgarian Communist Party on the Buzludzha Peak of the Balkan Mountain.
The performance takes the form of a radioballet – an audio script, listened to and acted out by the audience, whose members are taken on a walk around the Buzludzha Monument, experiencing its architecture, revisiting scenes from its history and instructed to perform casual gestures, some of which remind discreet gestures of protest, such as the ones once performed by Jiří Kovanda in the Prague of 1976 or Erdem Gündüz at Gezi Park in the Istanbul of 2013.
The exhibition and performance are part of M.A.P.S. project and are realized in collaboration between the Museum of Humour and Satire (Bulgaria), Informbureau Association (Bulgaria), MoTA (Slovenia), WHMEDIA (Austria), Tačka komunikacije (Serbia), Centre for Central European Architecture (Prague), ArtOS Foundation(Cyprus) and with support from Creative Europe Programme of the European Commission, the National Culture Fund of Bulgaria and with the collaboration of Stara Zagora Regional Government.

The Magic of Bulgaria: Bulgarian history coming to life (Dryanovo, Bozhentsi, Gabrovo)
The adventure continues! Our next destination is in Central Bulgaria. We visit the Dryanovo monastery, where the Apostle of Liberty, Vasil Levski (one of the most prominent revolutionaries against the Ottomans), used to hide during the Ottoman yoke in the 19th century. We then go to Bozhentsi - a nearby village with authentic houses, restaurants and shops. There's even a famous brand of Bulgarian yoghurt with the same name. Afterwards, we visit the open ethnographic museum in Gabrovo called Etara, where we saw various water-powered machines from the 19th century. Stay tuned for my next video!

Carnaval Gabrovo 2015 1
