International Museum Day
International Museum Day
Event: International Museum Day
Date: 05.18.2011
Time: 10:00AM-10:00PM
Venue: Cafesjian Center for the Arts
Attendance: 5,500 people
Each year since 1977, the International Council of Museums organizes International Museum Day (IMD), a special moment for the global museum community - on or about May 18. Each year, the Advisory Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) defines a specific theme for the International Museum Day. The theme for 2011 was Museums and Memory: Objects Tell Your Story. The weekend before the Museum Day is the traditional time for Museum Nights, when museums all over the world keep their doors open till early in the morning, offering special exhibitions and programming. The Cafesjian Center for the Arts was participating in International Museum Day celebrations for the second time since its opening in 2009.
Special programming was planned at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts for the International Museum Day on May 18. In keeping with this year's theme, Museums and Memory, the Cafesjian Center for the Arts presented an exhibition titled Cascade in Memory. This exhibition lifted the curtain of the past covering the place known as the Cascade Complex. It featured archival photos of pre-Cascade period, its famous fountain, mosaic and the park, the real model of the fountain mosaic, created by its sculptor, Derenik Danielyan. Photos of the construction period of the Cascade, as well as the Cafesjian Center for the Arts were also on exhibit. Also, a special documentary short movie was created, in which archival videos were used, presenting the site from 60s till nowadays. The exhibition was organized at the Star Landing, open to public till May 23.
On the same evening, Heads of different museums, special invitees and CCA members were invited to the celebration of the International Museum Day. The evening program featured a tour of the newly opened exhibitions: Spring Exhibition, Ivana Šrámková: Geometric Forms and Images, Hagop Hagopian: The Song of Earthen Colors, Cascade in Memory, as well as a concert of Armenian music by mezzo-soprano Anna Mayilyan. After the concert, champagne and strawberries were served. All guests, as well as concert participants were delighted by the evening and thanked once again the Cafesjian Center for the Arts for the wonderful initiative.

SBINBEN: Smart Bio-inspired Building Envelopes
The SBINBEN project explores the formal characteristics and architectural potential of programmable textiles. Specifically, it is shown how dynamic 3D surface geometries may be generated by printing rigid 2D patterns onto pre-stretched fabric. The resulting surfaces have aesthetic and structural properties similar to adaptive skins found in nature, with potential applications in architecture, interior design, fashion and beyond.

Armenian Art and Artists as a Bridge Between Nations | Satenik Chookaszian | TEDxYSMU
There are a lot of well-known art-pieces in the world which were done by Armenian artists and architects. Unfortunately the origins of those masterpieces are not well-known in Armenia.
With this TEDx talk Satenik Chookaszian will show a few artworks, made by Armenians, giving a message that we should use the art as a bridge between nations as well as save and appreciate the current artworks. She has studied at Ca' Foscari University of Venice, later published papers and delivered speeches in various seminars and workshops held in different countries, including USA, Germany, Russia, Poland, Italy, Tunisia, Turkey and Greece. In 2015 she has got her Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Arts. New Singing Fountains in Yerevan 2020, Armenia [TravelerNews]
New Singing Fountains in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia
The complex of singing fountains is located in the capital of Armenia between the Republic Square and the National Gallery. This is the very first water-musical construction in the territory of the former USSR. Today, the singing fountains of Yerevan are a popular place for evening walks both among citizens and tourists.
In Soviet times, the fountains were accompanied by a live orchestra. The townspeople and tourists came here to dance.
The music in the singing fountains changes periodically. In addition to the masterpieces of classical music, fountains “dance” to songs of the 20th and 21st centuries - from rock hits of the 60-70s and pop tracks of the present to Armenian national melodies. But the finale is unchanged - the performance ends with the lyrical song of the Frenchman of Armenian descent Charles Aznavour “Une vie d’amour” (“Eternal Love”).
→ Hours of singing fountains in Yerevan 2020
Fountains are open daily (except Mondays) from 08:00 to 20:00 without a light and music performance. The opening hours of the singing fountains in Yerevan are independent of holidays and weekends. Fountains are launched in April / May, and they do not stop working until September / October. The exact launch schedule depends on weather conditions. Usually, announcements are published on the city portals of Yerevan.
The show with lighting, dancing streams and music lasts for 3 hours - from 20:00 to 23:00.
Since the show is quite long, it is more convenient to watch it from the terrace of the cafe. Tourists are advised to take places in advance, in the evenings the summer terrace of the cafe is crowded. In the daytime, the fountain also functions, but without lighting and musical accompaniment - only small bunches of water.
In the 60s, a group of Yerevan engineers, led by Doctor of Technical Sciences Professor Abram Abrahamyan, began designing a musical-dance fountain structure. The project was to become not only innovative, but also organically fit into the Republic Square, without violating the architectural balance.
In 1971, the fountains in Yerevan “sang”, which became a real sensation for the entire Soviet Union. They became the first such design in the USSR. Soon, applications for singing fountains began to come from other cities of the Soviet Union. Similar designs for the authorship of the same team of engineers appeared in Karaganda, Sochi, Batumi, Kharkov and Krivoy Rog. The model of Yerevan musical fountains visited the world exhibition in Buenos Aires and was highly appreciated by world experts. The authors of the project received the State Prize of the Armenian Republic for achievements in the field of technology.
→ New Singing Fountains in Yerevan
Towards the middle of zero, the fountains became unusable, but the authorities decided to keep one of the main attractions of Yerevan. 1.8 million dollars were allocated for the reconstruction. Modernization of the design was done by a French company. In 2007, on the anniversary of the Independence of Armenia, the fountains again began to work and became a symbol of modern Yerevan. At the opening of the updated design, he was accompanied by the State Philharmonic Orchestra of Armenia. Once again, the fountain was modernized in 2011, to the 20th anniversary of the country's independence. Now it corresponds to similar constructions in Europe - water screens are installed, smoke appears above the water and moving jets with a height of 50 meters. Now, the singing fountains of Yerevan are the city’s most populous place in the evening.
→ How to get to the singing fountains in Yerevan
Fountains are located in the center of the capital of Armenia. The surrounding area of the republic is a favorite place for citizens to meet and relax. Near the fountain complex are the Museum of the History of Armenia, the Central Bank, the Art Gallery of Yerevan, the State Musical Comedy Theater named after Paronyan.
→ Republic Square with singing fountains
You can get to the singing fountains by metro, to the station Republic Square. There is only one metro line; getting lost in the stations is difficult. Citizens recommend using the metro in the evening, when Yerevan is in traffic jams. The metro is open until 23:30 (another half hour after the end of the fountain show). Trains are small (only 2 cars), run at intervals of 5 minutes.
On the opposite side of the square (on Amiryan street) there is a ground transportation stop “Republic Square”. Buses No. 1 and 33 stop here.
