VENEZUELA: CARACAS: INSTITUTE OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH MAY CLOSE
Spanish/Nat
The heart of Venezuela's scientific research may be shut down due to lack of government funding.
The Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research conducts nearly a third of the country's scientific investigations and is one of the largest and most important institutes in the region.
A big sign that reads 'closed' decorates the entrance to the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research.
The institute is the heart of the country's scientific and technological investigations.
But it could soon be shut down for lack of government funding and that threatens research.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
Animals kept in the lab, some 300 research projects are at risk of being cancelled precisely because of lack of a budget.
SUPER CAPTION: Dr. Andres Soyano, Subdirector Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Investigations
These rats could be the next victims of the institute's financial collapse.
Researchers say they spend more than half of their budget on food for the rats and other animals used in their research.
Some 300 scientific projects are now at stake unless the government allocates more funds.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
'We still haven't gotten our budget even though the government says it has been offered. We need a budget immediately so we can buy food and medicines for the animals. If this does not happen, science and technology will cease and a country without science and technology will fall into scientific darkness.'
SUPER CAPTION: Dr. Felix Quimenes, Veterinarian
One of those projects could find an antidote to treat the deadly effects of scorpion bites on the lungs and the pancreas.
The experiment has been paralysed indefinitely.
The IVIC - as the institute is known - has a library with over two (m) million records on its previous and current research.
The library serves more than 150-thousand users in Venezuela and over 50-thousand in Latin America and the Caribbean.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
'We produce over two (m) million photocopies, that is, more than two million scientific articles. It costs two-and-a-half (m) million dollars to keep this collection. If we don't have the budget this will mean the largest scientific loss in Latin America in 50 years.'
SUPER CAPTION: Javier Bringa, Chief Librarian IVIC
The institutes conducts 30 percent of the country's scientific research.
Each year some 30 students receive a Doctorate's Degree from the IVIC.
Government officials promised to discuss an increase in salary for the staff and the possibility of allocating a budget.
But the scientists say that could take months and without a definite answer their work will still be in jeopardy.

SUMMARY
=======
Science and technology in Venezuela includes research based on exploring Venezuela's diverse ecology and the lives of its indigenous peoples.
Under the Spanish rule, the monarchy made very little effort to promote education in the American colonies and in particular in those in which they had less commercial interest, as in Venezuela. The country only had its first university some two hundred years later than Mexico, Colombia or Peru.
The first studies on the native languages of Venezuela and the indigenous customs were made in the middle of the XVIII century by the Catholic missionaries. The Italian Jesuit Filippo Salvatore Gilii was one of the first to theorize about linguistic relations and propose possible language families for the Orinoco river basin. The Swedish botanist Pehr Löfling, one of the 12 Apostles of Carl Linnaeus, classificated for the first time the exhuberant tropical flora of the Orinoco river basin.
In the XIX century several scientists visited Venezuela such as Alexander Humboldt, Aimé Bonpland, Agostino Codazzi, Jean-Baptiste Boussingault, Mariano Rivero, François de Pons, Robert Hermann Schomburgk, Wilhelm Sievers, Carl Ferdinand Appun, Gustav Karsten, Adolf Ernst, Benedikt Roezl, Karl Moritz, Friedrich Gerstäcker, Anton Goering, Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert, Alfred Russel Wallace, Jean Chaffanjon, Émile-Arthur Thouar, Jules Crevaux and many others, some of whom are buried in Venezuela.
The Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC) founded on February 9, 1959 by government decree, has its origins in the Venezuelan Institute of Neurology and Brain Research (IVNIC) which Dr. Humberto Fernandez Moran founded in 1955.
Other major research institutions include the Central University of Venezuela and the University of the Andes, Venezuela.
Notable Venezuelan scientists include nineteenth century physician José María Vargas , the chemist Vicente Marcano and the botanist and geographer Alfredo Jahn (1867–1940). More recently, Baruj Benacerraf shared the 1980 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, Augusto Pi Sunyer (1955), Aristides Bastidas (1980), Marcel Roche (1987) and Marisela Salvatierra (2002) have been recipients of UNESCO's Kalinga Prize for promotion of the public understanding of science. On July 2, 2012, L. Rafael Reif – a Venezuelan American electrical engineer, inventor and academic administrator – was elected president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

SUMMARY
=======
Bahrain ( ( listen); Arabic: البحرين al-Baḥrayn Arabic pronunciation: [aɫ baħrajn] ( listen)), officially the Kingdom of Bahrain (Arabic: مملكة البحرين Mamlakat al-Baḥrayn), is an island country in the Persian Gulf. The sovereign state comprises a small archipelago centered around Bahrain Island, situated between the Qatar peninsula and the north eastern coast of Saudi Arabia, to which it is connected by the 25-kilometre (16 mi) King Fahd Causeway. Bahrain's population is 1,234,571 (c. 2010), including 666,172 non-nationals. It is 765.3 square kilometres (295.5 sq mi) in size, making it the third-smallest nation in Asia after the Maldives and Singapore.Bahrain is the site of the ancient Dilmun civilisation. It has been famed since antiquity for its pearl fisheries, which were considered the best in the world into the 19th century. Bahrain was one of the earliest areas to convert to Islam, in 628 CE. Following a period of Arab rule, Bahrain was occupied by the Portuguese in 1521, who in turn were expelled in 1602 by Shah Abbas I of the Safavid dynasty under the Persian Empire. In 1783, the Bani Utbah clan captured Bahrain from Nasr Al-Madhkur and it has since been ruled by the Al Khalifa royal family, with Ahmed al Fateh as Bahrain's first hakim.
In the late 1800s, following successive treaties with the British, Bahrain became a protectorate of the United Kingdom. In 1971, Bahrain declared independence. Formerly an emirate, the Arab constitutional monarchy of Bahrain was declared a kingdom in 2002. In 2011, the country experienced protests inspired by the regional Arab Spring. Bahrain's ruling al-Khalifa royal family has been accused and criticized for human rights abuses, including imprisonment, torture and execution of dissidents, political opposition figures and its Shia Muslim population.Bahrain had the first post-oil economy in the Persian Gulf. Since the late 20th century, Bahrain has invested in the banking and tourism sectors. Many large financial institutions have a presence in Manama, the country's capital. It has a high Human Development Index and is recognised by the World Bank as a high-income economy. Bahrain is a member of the United Nations, Non-Aligned Movement, Arab League, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Gulf Cooperation Council.
